comerciales, universidades, investigaciones nacionales y
ornamentales, ridos y minerales industriales.
caractersticas, propiedades fsico-qumicas, usos, aplicaciones,
comercio interno y externo, balanza comercial, precios referenciales
nacional; identificando tres grandes grupos: yacimientos asociados
a procesos magmticos, yacimientos asociados a procesos
sedimentarios y yacimientos asociados a procesos metamrficos.

Estados Unidos, Canad, China, Francia, Alemania, Japn, Chile,

ABSTRACT
The industrialists minerals and rocks (RMI) or not metallic resources
have a significant value in the economy of the country and there
are a support for its development, although there is notable the
production of minerals destined for the construction industry, also it
has importance in the modern industry due to its multiple applications
and uses.
This compendium is the result of available information set from
national and private sources: Mines and Energy Department,
General direction of customs of Peru, INGEMMET, Department of
Production, INEI, BCRP, SNI, ADEX, ASOCEM, COPECO,
Craftsmens Association, mining companies, commercial companies,
universities, private, national and foreign investigations, unpublished
field information, another else.
The summary is organized in five chapters: The first chapter is an
introduction in which are defined and explain the main concepts
about RMI, its importance, uses and industrial applications, prices
and infrastructure influence and the transport for its development.
The second chapter shows a matrix of uses and applications of the
RMI in the economic subsections and industrial groups. This matrix
is a crucial key of production, because there is the first tool that
provided a fast, specific and concise view about the uses,
applications, and the place of geologic characteristics of the main
quarries and occurrences of the RMI in Peru.
The third chapter contains twentynine geologic and economic
descriptive profiles there are ornamental rocks, arid and industrial
minerals. These products have an important role in the new scene
of growth and progress of the humanity as its incidence in different
industries, principally in construction. Each of these profiles explain
in a concise way the definition, classification, characteristics, physicalchemical properties, uses and applications, conditions and formation
background, the most important quarries and occurrences, and
also a map with facts of location, production, apparent consumption,
internal and external trade, trade balance, referential prices and
other aspects in the situation of the world production of the RMI.
The fourth chapter describes the association of the geologic
processes that have given origin to not metallic deposits in all country.
Three big groups have been identified: deposits associated with
magmatic processes, deposits associated with sedimentary
processes and deposits associated with metamorphic processes.
Also, it presents maps with the occurrences areas for each RMI,
based on the available information of occurrences, quarries and
geologic features that allowed the formation of deposits.

The fifth chapter includes a synthesis of the actual situation, potential,

production and rocks and minerals trade in Peru. There has
registered 2.339 quarries and occurrences of wish 30 % are
limestone, silica and gypsum, 22 % arid, 10 % ornamental rocks,
9 %salt and 29 % remainder corresponds to another rocks and
industrial minerals distributed in 23 regions. However this number
only represents 40 % currants rights and authorizations of not
metallic deposits to September, 2007.
The volume of Peruvian production of RMI during 1995-2006
suffers an important growth. To exception of construction materials
sector that show more than 100 % like annual growth average.
Although the development is impelled by the big and medium
producers, the handmade and small producers are the most
productive sector.
The Peruvian nonmetallic trade balance represented by imports
and exports of RMI showed a positive balance for 1995-2007
period. Peru imports about forty processed minerals from several
countries, including United States, Canada, China, France,
Germany, Japan, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, etc. The feldspars,
ornamental rocks, siliceous sandstones, salt, kaolin, bentonite and
diatomite are the 74% of these importations. In the other hand,
exports are represented by more than 33% industrial minerals
and rocks, of which 52% are ornamental rocks, borates and
derivatives 22%, special clays 9% and 17% for the other
substances.
The potential of RMI in Peru is very big, and much remains to be
discovered in our territory. This text is taken as the beginning of a
work that should be worked and enriched in the future, while
researchers from public and private institutions give more time and
interest to RMI as a source of economic welfare and progress. This
means that this publication is the first from others that will have
updated permanently. Finally, INGEMMET and Academic
Departments of Universities, especially of geology, mining,
metallurgy, chemical and industrial faculties, with the support of
public and private resources, must unite the efforts for prospecting
and investigate nonmetallic mineral resources available for
exploration, exploitation, processing and application in the domestic
and foreign markets, getting progressively increased production of
these substances, with the greatest possible value and benefit of
our country.
