BUILDING DESIGN

2.1

General Requirements
-

2.2

together with all the necessary services, facilities, system works and drainage from there,
in his scope of work. The design shall be subject to the APPROVAL of OWNER.
The sizes of the buildings and shelters shall be based on the equipment to be served,
material stored, and personnel access and space requirements.
All buildings, to which personnel are regularly assigned shall have lavatory facilities.

Aesthetic Design Considerations

The aesthetic appearance of all buildings shall be carefully considered and developed to be
complimentary to nearby Buildings. Particular areas for further consideration shall consist of, but
not be limited to, the following:
-

2.3

Commonality of masonry finishes where appropriate.

Commonality of colors.
Continuation of the feature bands in the masonry cladding particularly at wall parapet
coping and above/below windows.
Commonality of door finishes/styles as appropriate.
Commonality of external glazing types as appropriate.

Page : 5 of 51

Applicable Codes and Standards

Blast resistant design shall be in accordance with Design of Blast Resistant Buildings in
Petrochemical Facilities, ASCE, and standards, specifications and publications referred therein
shall be construed as applicable codes and standard for blast resistant design.

2.3.2

Blast Pressure and Duration

Blast pressure and duration are under the influence of various factors such as explosion types,
building sizes, distances between a structure and a potential source and so on. Blast resistant
buildings should be designed based on blast pressure and duration predicted by Quantitative
Risk Assessment (QRA).If these are not available, the basis for blast load may be developed
from the references, SG-22 and CIA 1992. According to both documents, blast overpressures for
buildings spaced 30 meters from vapor cloud explosion hazard is specified as commonly used
criteria as follows:
- Side-on overpressure
- Duration

:
:

3 psi (21 kPa)

100 milliseconds

These blast loading have been widely used in the past for blast resistant design throughout the
industry, so it will be applied to the blast resistant buildings of JAC Project.
2.3.3

Resistance Analysis Methods

MAIN CONTRACTOR shall use dynamic analysis methods appropriate for specific blast design.
The selected methods shall adequately model the dynamic response of structure to the applied
blast loads and the structural component interaction.
For the Project, the equivalent static design method, which is one of analysis methods provided
in Chapter 6 of the ASCE Report, will be used with blast loads.
a)

b)

Equivalent Static Loads

Equivalent static loads may be used to represent the dynamic effects of the blast loading
on each structural component. The equivalent static loads shall be dynamic resistance (R)
required for components to withstand the specified blast loading without exceeding the
deformation limits specified in specification.
Dynamic resistance
Required dynamic resistance (R) in the direction of blast loads shall be calculated as
followings in accordance with the procedure outlined in ASCE Manual 42.
