Shelves shall be roll-out type for bases of less than 600 mm. in width. Otherwise, half
depth shelves resting on adjustable shelf clips shall be provided.
Chemical resistant surfaces shall be tested using ten drops of the chemicals listed below
and then covered by a watch glass for one hour. After the surface has been washed with
soap and water, rinsed and dried, it shall show No Effect other than a slight change in
gloss which is visible only from a grazing angle.

b)
Furniture worktops
Worktops and sinks shall be suitable for heavy work loads, severe chemical attack, physical
shock, and mechanical abrasion.
Worktops, sink basins, and cup sinks shall not depend on surface coatings for resistance to
chemical attack.
Waterproof cement such as RTV silicone or resin shall be used to join adjacent worktops
and sealing sinks or cup sinks.
Worktops shall be tested using ten drops of the chemicals shown in Table I and then
covered by a watch glass for 24 hours. After the surface has been washed with soap and
water, rinsed, and dried, it shall meet or exceed the spot test results as shown in Table I.
Worktops shall have a elevated edge around entire worktops so that the possibly spilled
chemicals and/or samples do not fall to the floor.

Design, construction, and finish of wall and floor storage cabinets shall, match those of the
base units.
- Sliding glass doors shall be made of double strength safety grade glass set into a protective
channel so that glass is not in contact with the metal frame.
- All joints in solvent storage cabinets shall be sealed to prevent leaks.
- Solvent storage cabinets shall be provided with minimum of two outlets with flash arrestors and
bung seals capable of being connected to the lab exhaust system to prevent accumulation of
hazardous fumes.
-
Solvent storage cabinets shall be provided with self closing doors, which can be fastened
open by a chain-latch and fusible-link assembly. Link shall melt at 70oC to release and close
doors in case of fire.

Interiors of acid storage cabinets shall be lined with acid resistant, fiberglass reinforced
cement (free of asbestos).
d) Fume Hoods
-
Fume hoods shall be able to introduce untempered outside air into a hood exhaust to limit
the percentage of conditioned air removed from the laboratory. Descriptive type names in
common use are: auxiliary air, balanced air, controlled air, make up air, induced air
Fume hood structures shall be constructed of highly fume and heat resistant materials.
Hood base unit shall meet design, construction, and finish specifications for base units.
Constant equalized air flow rate though the hood shall be maintained bypass flow of outside
air into the good as the flow of conditioned air through the hood face is decreased by the
closing sash.
Hoods shall be equipped with two sets of adjustable baffles: An upper baffle to adjust the
flow of exhaust air, and a lower baffle to control air flow across the word surface.
All non chromed or non stainless steel metal components shall receive a chemical resistant
coating be fore assembly.
- Front panel mounted control knobs for gas, air, water, steam, and vacuum fixtures shall be
provided, and front (outside) panel mounted and color coded.
- Electrical control switches for hood light and fan blower shall be provided and front (outside)
panel mounted.
- Electrical outlets shall be front (outside) panel mounted and meet Underwriter Laboratories
(UL) approval.
- Hood lamp shall be vapor proof with shatterproof globe and meet UL approval
- Fume hoods shall be equipped with spark-protected, closed lighting fixtures.
- Face velocity range shall be 23 to 45 meters per minute.
- Fume hoods shall be provided with vent collars in the roof of the fume hood chamber for
connection to the exhaust system.
- Fume hood fans shall not be the motor-in-channel type but must have an electric motor that
is separate from the fan and housing.

All exhaust fans, motors and blowers shall be designed to be externally mounted at
discharge end of exhaust duct.
The exhaust system for fume hoods shall be equipped with a low velocity perforated box
diffuser for smell trapping.
- Where required by law, scrubbers shall be provided to limit the release of toxic or noxious
fumes. Scrubbers shall activate automatically upon switching on the fan motor. For
Perchloric acid and Tetraethyl lead fume hood blower shall be sufficient to maintain a
minimum face velocity of 45 meters per minute with the fully opened.
e) Sinks
-
Drain troughs shall be constructed of cast epoxy resin with no joints and installed with a
minimum 1:50 slope.
Drum trap and sink outlet assembly connections, shall be provided for every sink. The drum
be easily removed from the rest of the trap for cleaning without removing inlet or outlet
connections

Valve bodies shall be of red brass allow. Handles, ground key cocks, and turrets shall be
brass drop forgings. Operating parts shall be made of solid brass or other metal suitable for
the application. Fixtures shall be chrome-plated with color coded identification buttons to
identify service
Self-closing distilled water fixtures shall be of chemically inert metallurgy and not
contaminate the water supply.
COMPRESSOR SHELTERS
The Compressor Shelters shall be housed within a single span steelwork portal framed structure
and covered with metal roof sheeting.
The sizes of Shelters shall be based on the equipment to be served, material stored, and
personnel access and space requirement.
