Rail Mounted Termination Assembly
Analog Input
(NRAI0 )

Preface

This manual describes analog input rail mounted termination

assemblies. A termination assembly is the transition between
input/output plant instrumentation wiring or cabling and the
INFI 90 OPEN distributed control system.
The name Termination Assembly or TA has been assigned to
differentiate the in-line, rail mounted characteristics of this
type of field termination from the Termination Unit or TU and
the Termination Module or TM.

INFI 90 OPEN is a registered trademark of Elsag Bailey Process Automation.

Safety Summary

GENERAL
WARNINGS

Units marked with EN-BC-606 must have alignment keys (AMP P/N
58327-1 Inter-Contact Plug) installed between contacts 15(S) and
16(T) of the pre-terminated cable.
Improperly set DIP switches may result in equipment damage.
Please read the instructions carefully before making connections or
applying power.
When voltage inputs are routed to the ()ASI02 or IMFBS01 slave
modules, the high impedance input will retain the signal in the event
of an open circuit. Bleeding resistors must be installed if timely bad
quality alarming is desired.

SECTION 1 - INTRODUCTION
OVERVIEW
This instruction is divided into 4 major sections, covering
operation, installation, calibration. and troubleshooting of the
Analog Input Termination Assembly (NRAI0_). Each topic
within these sections is divided into sub-sections with information specific to a particular application.
The analog input termination assembly is available in several
variations. The symbol _ (underscore) is used when referring to
a feature that is common to all variations. When it is necessary
to refer to a particular model, a specific number is used. Refer
to NOMENCLATURE in this section for more information.
The NRAI0_ can be used with any of the ()ASI02, IMFBS01 or
IMASI03 slave modules. The available capabilities and alternatives vary depending on which slave module is being used.
The ASI02 slave is available in Network 90 and INFI 90 OPEN
form factors. They are functionally identical so far as the termination assembly is concerned and are grouped by the () prefix.
A complete listing of product instructions for associated slave
and master modules is in REFERENCE DOCUMENTS.
The NRAO01 Analog Output Termination Assembly is complementary to the NRAI0_. Refer to the documents listed in
ELSAG BAILEY CANADA REFERENCE DOCUMENTS for complete information.

()ASI02
The ()ASI02 has 15 input channels to digitize voltage signals
for use within the INFI 90 OPEN system. The NRAI0_ provides
a corresponding 15 channels of field terminations. Each channel of the NRAI0_ has socket pins for optional signal conditioners and isolators.
When a channel of the NRAI0_ is being used in the straight
through mode (no isolator or conditioner), passive signal preparation for the analog input slave is performed. DIP switches
are used to select the signal preparation.
A broad range of conditioners and isolators are available for
installed use in one or more channels in place of the jumper
boards supplied as standard. All conditioners and isolators
have a common DIP switch setting. Refer to Figure 2-4 and
Figures A-6, A-7, A-8, A-9, and A-10.

INTRODUCTION

IMFBS01
The IMFBS01 slave has the functionality of the ()ASI02 slave,
but includes Elsag Bailey field bus (smart transmitter) support.
When the smart transmitters are used in the analog
point-to-point mode there is no functional change versus the
()ASI02.
NOTE: Signal isolators do not pass the field bus FSK protocol and
therefore should not be installed when Elsag Bailey field bus communication is required. Refer to Figure A-12.

IMASI03
The IMASI03 enhanced slave module has 16 isolated inputs,
each individually able to digitize a broad range of signal types.
The use of the optional isolators is not generally required.
The NRAI0_ performs passive signal conditioning for the
enhanced analog input slave module. DIP switches are used to
select the required conditions. Low level, thermocouple and
RTD inputs are routed straight through to the slave. Refer to
Figures A-13 and A-14.
The NRAI02 includes cold junction compensation and must be
used when thermocouple inputs to the IMASI03 are required.

SECTION 2 - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

INTRODUCTION
This section provides sufficient information to allow users to:
understand the use of the assembly, document instrumentation wiring connections, determine and document DIP switch
configurations, and perform basic problem solving.
There is a considerable variety of hardware combinations possible. Detailed descriptions and diagrams are used to illustrate
as many combinations as possible.

FUNCTIONAL OPERATION
The NRAI0_ consists of a circuit repeated 16 times. The first 15
circuits have socket pins for the optional isolators and conditioners. Removable jumper boards, P/N WTL 990756, are provided with the base unit. Optional jumper boards, P/N WTL
990757, are available to provide input protection against
surges as defined by IEEE C37.90a - 1974 Surge Withstand
Capability (SWC) Tests. The sixteenth circuit, which is only
used with the IMASI03 slave module, has no socket pins.
Refer to Figures 2-5, 2-6 and 3-5 for cable connection details.
Refer to Figure 3-4 for power, common, and shield drain connection details.
24 Vdc power is distributed along two paths. The presence of
power on each path is indicated by an LED being on green.
On the first path DS1 indicates that power is available for two
wire devices, the power leaving the termination assembly being
current limited to about 170 mA per channel by 150 resistors. The second power path is routed through fuse F1 to
socket pin 3 of the 15 conditioner and isolator mounting positions, with DS2 indicating the fuse status.
The total power requirements are determined by summing
individual power requirements for each input channel per
Table 1-6.

NOTES:
1. The NN refers to circuit numbers 1 to 16.
2. The dual +'ve and -'ve terminals are supplied to allow independent marshalling. Refer to Figures A-1 through A-14 for examples.
3. The C terminal becomes the third or compensating lead of an
RTD or thermocouple cold junction compensation.
4.

The SH terminal is for cable shields.

5. The
terminal is used with the optional surge withstand
jumper board.

DIP SWITCH FUNCTIONALITY

S1 C1 sets the input for 4-wire transmitter operation and S1
C2 is for 2-wire transmitter operation.
S17 1C1 allows voltage inputs. S17 1C2 connects a precision
resistor for conversion from 4 to 20 mA dc to 1 to 5 Vdc. S17
2C1 is for differential inputs. S17 2C2 provides a system common reference.
When voltage inputs are routed to the ()ASI02 OR IMFBS01
slave modules, consideration of the effect of an open circuit is
necessary. The high impedance of the input circuit will hold
the residual voltage indefinitely and the fault monitoring
inherent in the system will not be triggered.

I-E96-443-1D

DIP SWITCH FUNCTIONALITY

2-3

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

If the voltage input has an elevated zero, such as a 1-5 Vdc signal, a bleeding resistor installed between the extra +ve and -ve
terminals will drain the voltage to 0 Vdc and a Bad Quality
alarm will be triggered. A 4.7 M, 1/4 W= resistor is recommended for this application. Refer to Figures A-4 and A-5.
If the voltage input has 0 Vdc as a valid part of its signal range
or if it is desirable to fail high, special consideration is
required. Please consult your Elsag Bailey system engineer, or
refer to Section 8 - SUPPORT SERVICES.
The IMASI03 slave and the optional signal isolators have
built-in open circuit detection so no special consideration is
required for them.
If conditioners and isolators are used, the switch settings must
be set for 4-wire, voltage, and system common reference (S1
C1, S17 1C1 and S17 2C2).

SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION
INTRODUCTION
This section explains the standard Elsag Bailey installation
practices as well as providing the basic information for those
installations where special mounting is required.

SPECIAL HANDLING
Preassembled termination cabinets should be handled in
accordance with the instructions found in the Site Planning,
Preparation and Equipment Installation Instruction.
Loose termination assemblies are shipped in foam padded
cardboard cartons. No special handling is required.

UNPACKING AND INSPECTION

The termination assemblies should be inspected for damage
and/or broken components. Although the assemblies are individually packaged in foam padded boxes, some bending of
components may occur during shipment. Most of these types
of problems can be corrected by the user. Physical breakage
should be reported to the shipping company.
The Elsag Bailey part drawing is listed in ELSAG BAILEY CANADA REFERENCE DOCUMENTS in Section 1, and should be
obtained if detailed inspection of components is necessary.

LOCATION CONSIDERATIONS
As with all electrical connections, the termination assemblies
should be mounted in environments that are relatively free
from conductive dusts and corrosive gases. Refer to ISA Environmental Standard S71.04-1985. The severity level should
be no worse than a good G2.
The assemblies have no exposed hazardous conductors and no
special enclosures are needed.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
No special safety considerations are necessary.

I-E96-443-1D

INTRODUCTION
3-1

INSTALLATION

SETUP AND PHYSICAL INSTALLATION

Typical Elsag Bailey Termination Cabinet Arrangement
The termination assemblies are oriented vertically on the DIN
mounting rails. The assemblies are inverted when field wiring
is to be on the right hand side.
The vertical orientation allows field instrumentation wire or
cable entering via the top or bottom of a cabinet, to be directly
routed to the appropriate terminal block.
The most accessible areas, at the front of each side, and at the
centre of the facing surface, are available for field I/O wiring.
Fifteen cm (six inches) of support space is available next to the
door on each side. If desired, plastic wire trays can be installed
with five cm (two inches) allowed between the plastic tray and
the field terminals for wire tag visibility.
The standard Elsag Bailey cabinet has 10 divisions from top to
bottom called rows and 4 location designations A to D, starting
at the front left, called zones. Zones C and D are eliminated
when front access (wall mounting) cabinet options are used.
Refer to Figure 3-2. Cabinet Interior and Figure 3-3. Cabinet
Cross Section, for a diagrammatic representation.
The vertically oriented rail mounting system, combined with
the variable lengths of the assemblies, has led to a modification of the standard equipment location numbering system.
Positions are used rather than rows and each zone has been
subdivided into (for example) A and A1. An example of the
complete location numbering system is below.

CUSTOM OR SPECIAL
The assemblies can be mounted on rails in almost any enclosure and orientation. When sufficient mounting width is available, horizontal orientation may be used.
Figure 3-2 is an approximate scale representation of a standard Elsag Bailey cabinet showing relative sizes of assemblies
and the position numbering that would be used. Zone A shows
3 type NRAI0_ input assemblies, zone B1 shows 3 type
NRAO01 output assemblies.

WIRING CONNECTIONS AND CABLING

Each terminal block is clearly marked with black lettering on a
white clip-on tag. Several connections have compound terminal blocks connected by printed circuit board traces. These
compound blocks allow the jumping of wires while maintain-

ing a single wire in any one clamp. All terminal block functions
are uniquely marked. The cage clamp technology provides a
fast and secure means of wiring connection such that crimped
lugs or ferrules are not necessary.
In addition to the pre-terminated cable to the slave, three wiring connections are required on the system side of the termination assembly. When the optional jumper boards, P/N WTL
990757 are used, a fourth connection is required.
A nominal +24 Vdc and dc common signal zero reference are
required. Refer to Table 1-6. Connection, Configuration, Power
Requirements and Option Data for voltage tolerance, current
requirements and necessary dc common grounding characteristics.

Figure 3-4. System Side Wiring Connections and Board Power Distribution

WIRING CONNECTIONS AND CABLING

3-5

INSTALLATION

Field instrument cable shielding is drained by connecting the

system side SH terminals to an appropriate ground with sufficiently low impedance to drain the EMF noise expected from
the plant environment.
The fourth connection is between the terminal and chassis
ground to provide a low impedance path to ground for the
unwanted incoming surges induced onto the input signal conductors.

OTHER EQUIPMENT INTERFACE

The supplied jumper boards can be replaced with either the
optional conditioners and isolators or custom designed daughter boards allowing considerable interface flexibility. Refer to
Figure A-11.
The NRAI0_ can be interfaced to NDCS03, IISAC01 and
NDIS0_ via the NRCS01 Termination Assembly. Refer to Figure
3-5. When the IMASI03 is employed, keep in mind that the
NDCS03 and IISAC01 can only accommodate 1-5 volt signals
for direct bar graph display in the bypass mode.

PRE-OPERATING ADJUSTMENTS
Every used input should be reviewed and DIP switches set
and/or conditioners or isolators installed as required.
The converters and isolators are pre-calibrated by the manufacturer. However, for maximum accuracy, the calibration
should be checked as outlined in Section 4 during initial
installation and periodically as outlined in Section 6.

I-E96-443-1D

OTHER EQUIPMENT INTERFACE

3-7

SECTION 4 - CALIBRATION
INITIAL CALIBRATION
The base NRAI0_ Termination Assembly requires no calibration. Proper setting of the DIP switches and proper configuration of the associated slave and processor modules is
necessary.
The optional conditioners and isolators are calibrated by the
manufacturer.
Should the calibration of the conditioners drift with time, they
can be adjusted using the potentiometers located beneath the
top label.
It is recommended that a bench or test set up be used when
doing the re-calibration of the conditioners and isolators.
Peel back the top label, and refer to Figure 4-1.

1

Determine the desired input type and span and obtain test equipment able to simulate 0 and 100% input.
1.1

Ensure that the model being used is appropriate for the desired input span.

Connect power supply, signal source and voltmeter as outlined in Figure 4-2.

Set the signal source at zero (0%) input; adjust the zero potentiometer until 1 volt
(or 0 volts, depending on output range) is seen at the output.

Set the signal source to full scale (100%) input; adjust the span potentiometer until
5 volts (or 10 volts, depending on output range) is seen at the output.

Repeat steps 3 and 4 as required.

Set the signal source to 3 volts; check that the output is 12 mA (or 3 volts depending on output range). The isolator should be replaced if half scale accuracy is not
acceptable.

The conditioner or isolator is now ready for installation on to the termination

assembly.

CHECKOUT
All termination assemblies are factory checked for short circuits, open circuits, and functional components (DIP switches,
etc.).
Termination assemblies installed in cabinet assemblies or
racks by Elsag Bailey are 100% checked in conjunction with
their respective slave modules. Refer to the Hardware/Communications Checkout Document listed in ELSAG BAILEY
CANADA REFERENCE DOCUMENTS in Section 1.

IN-SERVICE CALIBRATION
In-service calibration is not recommended.

CHECKOUT
4-2

I-E96-443-1D

SECTION 5 - TROUBLESHOOTING
INTRODUCTION
As an essentially passive device, it is unlikely that the termination assembly will be the source of an equipment failure. Verify
that the procedures outlined in Section 6 have been performed.
Any personnel performing troubleshooting should be familiar
with both the hardware and software aspects of the system
and related field devices.

ERROR MESSAGES AND CORRECTIVE ACTION

Error messages pertaining to system inputs and outputs are
reported within the status bytes and error codes of the applicable controller or processor module. Refer to the REFERENCE DOCUMENTS in Section 1 of this manual to determine
the appropriate controller or processor module instruction
book.
When operator interface stations are provided, the I90 Status
displays, which translate the module status bytes into text
messages, allow operators or maintenance personnel to identify specific point malfunctions.

PROBLEM DETERMINATION AND VERIFICATION PROCEDURES

In an industrial setting there may be a variety of causes for
equipment malfunction. The age of a device, the quality of the
environment (including extreme heat, temperature swings,
corrosive gases, and conductive dusts) and of course, human
error and accidents.
As previously mentioned, the Elsag Bailey system can assist in
the location of a problem at a particular slave or input. Keep in
mind that the termination assembly is the division between
field equipment and the DCS software (configuration), so both
must be considered when pinpointing a problem.

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
The following guide is intended to assist in troubleshooting by
detailing the areas within the Elsag Bailey system that should
be considered.

SECTION 6 - MAINTENANCE
INTRODUCTION
The termination assembly is designed for use within enclosures in typical industrial environments. Although all connection points are made corrosion resistant by using alloys or gold
plating, and the printed circuit board is coated to prevent corrosion, it still requires some attention to ensure its long term
functionality.
The frequency of the checking and maintenance should be
geared to the quality of the environmental conditions in which
the termination assembly is operating.
As with any electrical installation, the integrity (tightness) of
all electrical contacts should be checked on a regular time
schedule.

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
In a good rack room environment (ISA G1), no scheduled
maintenance is required. Preventive maintenance should be
practised.
In harsher environments (ISA G2), the cable connections
should be checked and cleaned annually. Socket mounted
components should be spot checked for corrosion at the contacts and cleaned if necessary.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES

The terminal blocks are vibration proof but proper tightening
is necessary to ensure long-term connection integrity.
The terminal blocks used (Weidmueller type GSE or LPK) have
a recommended tightening torque of 0.5 Newton-meters (0.45
pounds/inch). Block tightness should be checked regularly.

CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES

The optional socket pin mounted conditioners and isolators
can be calibrated. Refer to Section 4, but no maintenance is
possible. Replacement is necessary if a unit is determined to
be faulty.
Otherwise, replacement of the termination assembly is necessary.

I-E96-443-1D

INTRODUCTION
6-1

SECTION 7 - REPAIR/REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES

INTRODUCTION
The base termination assembly has no active components and
has been carefully designed to tolerate as many field wiring
inconsistencies as possible. Without the optional conditioners
and isolators, incorrect field wiring or DIP switch settings can
result in damage to a connected slave module.
Inadvertent connection of a supply voltage greater than 48 Vdc
will result in the destruction of one or both power supply status LED's DS1 and DS2. Damage to isolators and conditioners
may also occur if the incorrect voltage remains connected for
an extended period.
The optional conditioners and isolators provide protection to
the input of up to 240 Vac for limited time durations. Refer to
the Isolator Procedures in Section 4 - CALIBRATION.

PROCEDURES
Refer to Section 5 - TROUBLESHOOTING before replacing.
Should replacement of the assembly be necessary, the most
important connections to check are the +24 and COM. These
connections are often in a daisy chain arrangement and disconnecting them could result in the loss of power to other
functioning termination assemblies.
The daisy chaining done by Elsag Bailey is normally in a loop
so that no power loss will occur if only a single termination
assembly is removed. Refer to the power wiring drawings
supplied with your system to verify the wiring scheme used.
To replace the termination assembly, follow Table 7-1.
