MAY 2008
Weather in General
May 2008 set a new record for the monthly mean temperature which was 33.5C, exceeding the
previous record by 0.5 C. The mean maximum temperature was almost 2C above normal but the
largest departure from the long-term mean was the average minimum temperature, which was a
whopping 3.5C higher than expected. Conversely, the humidity was exceptionally low ranging
between 10 and 15% below normal, helping to keep conditions comfortable.
Weather in detail
The first few days of May were very hazy with visibility consistently between 3-7 km. The lowest
maximum for the month occurred on the 1st when the temperature reached 34.5C. By the 4th the
worst of the dusty conditions had cleared and temperatures had increased. During the 5th, unstable
conditions developed over the region triggering thunderstorm clouds over the Gulf to the east of
Qatar. During the early morning of the 6th, the thunderstorm activity approached Dubai, unleashing
strong winds, gusting to 53 knots, along the coast. The impact of the squall on the Airport was
significantly less with winds only gusting to 32 knots with blowing sand briefly reducing visibility to
4000 metres. A few spots of rain were also experienced, but were not enough to wet the rain gauge.
Following the passage of the storm, the wind flow settled to a moderate northwesterly until the 8th
bringing cooler air to the Emirates. As the winds weakened on the 9th, temperatures began to rise
and peaked at 43.1C on the 10th, this being the highest maximum temperature recorded during the
month. Moderate southerly winds then persisted until the 12th maintaining the higher temperatures.
During May strong temperature gradients often develop as land temperatures increase rapidly but the
sea temperature remains relatively cool. This results in stronger than normal sea breezes and
occasional sea breeze fronts. A good example of this occurred on the 12th, when a sea breeze
averaging 20 knots and gusting to 33 knots hit Dubai Airport raising sand and reducing visibility to
1000 metres for a brief period.
During the 13th, a light to moderate northwesterly flow re-developed allowing temperatures to ease a
little. From the 13th until the 19th conditions remained pleasant and although temperatures remained
above normal, the humidity was low with relatively good visibility. During the morning of the 20th,
moderate southerly winds gave way to fresh northwesterly winds as a weak surface trough passed
through Dubai. The northwesterly winds then strengthened, and reached a peak on the 21st with
wave heights of up to10 feet reported offshore. This spell of cooler northwesterly winds brought
about a five-day period of below average temperatures. Apart from the 1st of the month these were
the only days when the maximum temperature failed to reach the long term average. Throughout the
shamal conditions were hazy with dust transported from the deserts of the northern Gulf. The lowest
minimum temperature for the month, 24.1C was recorded on the 23rd.
A fresh to strong southerly gradient developed during the morning of the 25th, causing extensive
areas of blowing sand, reducing the visibility to 1500 metres at the airport. Similar conditions
prevailed the following morning, although as winds were slightly weaker, the visibility only fell to
5km. Over the following days the southerly gradient decreased slowly and visibilities increased
significantly. Temperatures also increased markedly under the southerly regime with maximum
temperatures exceeding 40C from the 25th to the 30th.

Notes:
Climatological measurements at Dubai International use Vaisala MIDAS IV
instrumentation.
Observations:
Observations are taken hourly for climatological purposes.
The means of Dry Bulb, Dew Point, Relative Humidity, Wind Speed, Pressure, Vapour Pressure
and Cloud are means of the hourly observations.
The Extreme Dry Bulb temperatures are based on Maximum and Minimum recordings.
Extreme Wet Bulb, Relative Humidity and Vapour Pressure are based on hourly values.
Maximum daily (or monthly) wind values are the highest 10 minute mean wind speed values during
the day (or month).
Maximum daily (or monthly) Gusts are the highest absolute 2 minute maximum values during the day
(or month)
Definitions
Weather Days
Fog
Haze
Days on which a particular phenomena occurred at least once at any time during the day.
Visibility reduced to less than 1000 m at eye level due to suspension of water droplets.
Atmospheric obscurity due to solid particles or water droplets (visibility 1000- 8000m).
For statistical purposes note that observations of mist are included in this definition.
Sandstorm
Visibility reduced to less than 1000 m at eye level due to dust or sand raised locally by
the wind.
Thunderstorm
Conversion Factors:
Wind speeds:
Knots (kts) to Miles per hour (mph)
Knots (kts) to Kilometres per hour (kph)
Knots (kts) to Metres per second (m/s)
Pressure:
Millibars (mb) or Hectopascals (hPa) to Inches (In)
Millibars (mb) or Hectopascals (hPa) to Millimetres (mm)
Temperature:
Celsius to Fahrenheit
Fahrenheit to Celsius
(C x 9/5) + 32 = F
