1 ) sketch the temperatue length curves for a counter flow and parallel flow heat
exchangers when i) Cc > Ch ii) Cc = Ch iii)Cc <Ch . A counter flow heat exchanger of
surface area 8 m2 is to be used to heat the a process lliquid by using a high
temperature from water avaailbale at another plant. If the overall coefficient of heat
transfer is 450 qz ,find the exit tepmeratures of the process liquid and water stream
from the data given below
((Inlet temp. in K
Mass flow rate in kg/s
Specific heat in kJ/kg .K
Hot fluid(water)

2) A home air conditioner system uses a counter flow heat exchanger to cool 0.8
kg/s of air from 45 deg to 15 deg. The cooling is accomplished by a stream of
cooling water that enters the system with 0.5kg/s flow rate and 8 deg
temperature .If the overall heat treansfer coefficient is 35 qz ,what heat exchanger
area is required? If the sa,e air flow is maintained while the water flow rate is
reduced to half ,how much will be the percentage reduction in heat transfer ? Use
effectiveness NTU approach. (Ans. a) 44.10 m 2 b)6.27% )
3) Water (sp heat= 4 kJ/kg K) enters a cross flow exchanger (both fliuids unmixed)
at 15 deg and flow at the rate of 7.5 kg/s .It cools air (C p = 1 kJ/kg K)flowing at the
rate of 10 kg/s from an inlet temperature of 120 deg .For an overall heat transfer
coefficient 780 qz and an exchanger surface area of 240 m 2 .Determine the total
heat transfer and the outlet temperature of air .How these results would be affected
if a 1 -10(one shell pass and ten tube pass) heat exchanger is employed? (Ans. t h2=
21.3 deg b) th2= 32.85 deg )
