A tubular heat exchanger is to be designed for cooling oil from a tepmperature of

80 to 30 C by a large of stagnant water which may be asummmed to remain

constant at a temperature of 20 C. The heat transfer surface consist of 30m long
straight tube of 20 mm inside diameter. The oil(specific gravity= 2.5 kJ/kg K and
sp.gravity = 0.8) flows through the cylindrical tube with an average velocity of 50
m/s . Calcuate the overall heat transfer coefficient for the oil cooler. ( Ans.
U=0.2987 kJ/m2-s-deg )
2)A counter flow concentric tube heat exchanger is used to cool the lubricating oil of
a large industrial gas turbinr engine. The oil flows through the tube at 0.19 kg/s (C p
= 2.18 kJ/kg K), and the coolant water flows in the annulus in the oppsite direction
at the rate of 0.15 kg/s (Cp= 4.18 kJ/kg K).the oilenters the coolant at 425 K and
leaves 345 Kwhile the coolant enters at 285 K. How long must the tube be made to
perform this duty if thr heat transfer coefficient from oil to tube surface is 2250
W/m2 K and from tube surface to water is 5650 qz ? The tube has a mean dia of
12.5mm and its wall presents negligible resisteance to heat transfer. (Ans. L =7.21
m)
3) A heat exchanger is to be designed tocondesnse 8 kg/s of an organic liquid ( T sat

60 kg/s. The overall heat transfer coefficient is 480 qz. Calculate (a) the number of
tube required .The tubes are to be of 25m diameter and 2 mm thickness and 4.85 m
length. (b) the number of tube passes. The velovity of the cooling water is not
toecxeed 2 m/s. (Ans. a)N=478 b)6 passes)

cooling water that enters the system with 0.5kg/s flow rate and 8 deg

reduced to half ,how much will be the percentage reduction in heat transfer ? Use
effectiveness NTU approach. (Ans. a) 44.10 m 2 b)6.27% )

3) Water (sp heat= 4 kJ/kg K) enters a cross flow exchanger (both fliuids unmixed)
at 15 deg and flow at the rate of 7.5 kg/s .It cools air (C p = 1 kJ/kg K)flowing at the
