Routing Engine
The Routing Engine runs Junos OS. The software processes that run on the Routing Engine
maintain the routing tables, manage the routing protocols used on the router, control the
router's interfaces, control some chassis components, and provide the interface for system
management and user access to the router.
The Routing Engine is installed into the midplane from the front of the chassis.
The Routing Engine is hot-pluggable. If you have only one Routing Engine, you can remove
and replace the Routing Engine without powering down the router, but the routing functions
of the system are interrupted when it is removed. If the host system is redundant, the
backup Routing Engine is hot-removable and hot-insertable. A backup Routing Engine can
be removed without interrupting routing functions.

Physical Interface Cards (PICs)
PICs physically connect the router to network media. PICs receive incoming packets from
the network and transmit outgoing packets to the network, performing framing and linespeed signaling for their media type as required. PICs also encapsulate outgoing packets
received from the Compact Forwarding Engine Board (CFEB) or Enhanced CFEB (CFEB-E)
before transmitting them. The controller ASIC on each PIC performs additional control
functions specific to the PIC media type.

Fixed Interface Card (FIC) (Not a FRU)
The Fixed Interface Card (FIC) is built into the router chassis.
The FIC receives incoming packets from the network and transmits outgoing packets to the
network, providing support for Fast Ethernet ports or Gigabit Internet interfaces, depending
on which version of the FIC is installed in the router.
The FIC also allows you to view alarm status at a glance and to perform some system
control functions, such as taking PICs online and offline.
The FIC is located on the front of the chassis to the left of the Routing Engine and is not a
field-replaceable unit (FRU).

CFEB and CFEB-E

Compact Forwarding Engine Board (CFEB) and Enhanced Compact Forwarding Engine Board
(CFEB-E) provides tunneling services. The optional Adaptive Services Module (ASM) on the
CFEB and CFEB-E, and the optional MultiServices Module (MSM) on the CFEB-E allow one or
more services to be configured on this interface. It provides route lookup, filtering, and
switching on incoming data packets, then directs outbound packets to the appropriate
interface for transmission to the network. The CFEB or CFEB-E communicates with the
Routing Engine using a dedicated 100-Mbps link that transfers routing table data from the
Routing Engine to the forwarding table. The link is also used to transfer routing link-state
updates and other packets destined for the router from the CFEB or CFEB-E to the Routing
Engine.
The CFEB or CFEB-E provides the following functions:

Route lookupsPerforms route lookups using the forwarding table stored in the
synchronous SRAM (SSRAM) on CFEBs or stored in the RLDRAM on CFEB-Es.
Management of shared memory uniformly allocates incoming data packets
throughout the router's shared memory.
Transfer of outgoing data packetsPasses data packets to the destination FIC or PIC
when the data is ready to be transmitted.
Transfer of exception and control packetsPasses exception packets to the
microprocessor on the CFEB or CFEB-E, which processes almost all of them. The
remainder are sent to the Routing Engine for further processing. Any errors
originating in the Packet Forwarding Engine and detected by the CFEB or CFEB-E are
sent to the Routing Engine using system log messages.

Built-in tunnel interfaceEncapsulates arbitrary packets inside a transport protocol,

providing a private, secure path through an otherwise public network. The built-in
tunnel interface on the CFEB or CFEB-E is configured the same way as a PIC. For
information about configuring the built-in tunnel interface, see the Junos OS Services
Interfaces Configuration Guide.
Optional Adaptive Services Module (ASM)Provides one or more services on one
PIC.

The CFEB and CFEB-E are hot-pluggable when you replace a CFEB with a CFEB or a CFEB-E
with a CFEB-E. Upgrading or downgrading a CFEB device requires a system reboot. You can
remove and replace the CFEB or CFEB-E without powering down the router, but the routing
functions of the system are interrupted when it is removed.
CFEB-E Provides the following additional functionality:

Optional MultiServices Module (MSM)Provides one or more services on one PIC.

Increased number of logical interfaces.
Increased route, next hop, and interface lookup memory.
Increased FPC throughput.
Enhanced class of service features, including:
o More queues and priority levels
o Increased drop precedence per queue
o Excess bandwidth allocation in proportion to weights
o Hierarchical policing
o Increased number of WRED profiles
o Independent EXP and DSCP rewrite
o Independent Layer 2 and Layer 3 classification on same port

M7i Adaptive Services Module (Not a FRU)

The Adaptive Services Module is an optional component of the CFEB and CFEB-E. The
Adaptive Services Module is similar to the standalone Adaptive Services PIC, but operates at
a reduced bandwidth. The Adaptive Services Module enables you to perform one or more
services on the same PIC by configuring a set of services and applications.
The Adaptive Services Module provides the following services:

Stateful firewalla type of firewall filter that considers state information derived from
previous communications and other applications when evaluating traffic.
Network Address Translation (NAT)a security procedure for concealing host
addresses on a private network behind a pool of public addresses.
Intrusion detection services (IDS)a set of tools for detecting, redirecting, and
preventing certain kinds of network attack and intrusion.

The configuration for these three services comprises a series of rules that you can arrange
in order of precedence as a rule set. Each rule follows the structure of a firewall filter, with a
from statement containing input or match conditions and a then statement containing
actions to be taken if the match conditions are met.
M7i MultiServices Module (Not a FRU)
The MultiServices Module is an optional component of the CFEB-E. The CFEB does not
support the MultiServices Module. The MultiServices Module enables you to perform one or
more services on the same PIC by configuring a set of services and applications. Like the
standalone MultiServices 100 PIC, the MultiServices Module supports the following services:

Layer 3 Services:
o Stateful firewalla type of firewall filter that considers state information
derived from previous communications and other applications when
evaluating traffic.
o Network Address Translation (NAT)a security procedure for concealing host
addresses on a private network behind a pool of public addresses.
o Intrusion detection services (IDS)A set of tools for detecting, redirecting,
and preventing certain kinds of network attack and intrusion.
o IPsec
o Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP)
o Active monitoring (cflowd)
o Tunnel services
o GRE prefragmentation
o GRE key stamping
o RPM
Layer 2 Services:
o MLPPP
o MLFR
o cRTP
o IPsec

o Multiclass MLPPP
o RPM
NOTE: You can enable either Layer 2 or Layer 3 services on the MultiServices Module, but
you cannot enable both Layer 2 and Layer 3 services concurrently.
Power System Description
The router uses either AC or DC power. You can install one or two load-sharing power
supplies at the bottom rear of the chassis. The power supplies connect to the midplane,
which distributes power to router components according to their individual voltage
requirements.
Cooling System Overview
The router cooling system consists of a fan tray, located along the left side of the chassis
that provides side-to-side cooling. It connects directly to the router midplane. The fan tray
is a single unit containing four individually fault-tolerant fans. If a single fan fails, the
remaining fans continue to function indefinitely. The fan tray is hot-removable and hotinsertable.

High-Availability Chassis Manager (HCM) (What is equivalent hardware in other

platforms) ok it is equivalent to CB
The High-Availability Chassis Manager (HCM) works with its companion Routing Engine to
provide control and monitoring functions for router components. The HCM also displays
alarm status and takes PICs online and offline.
Two HCMs are installed into the midplane from the front of the chassis, the master HCM
performs all functions and provides PIC removal buttons for the first FPC. The backup HCM
provides PIC removal buttons for the second FPC. The HCM in the slot labeled HCM0 is
paired with the Routing Engine in the slot labeled RE0. Likewise, the HCM in the slot labeled
HCM1 is paired with the Routing Engine in the slot labeled RE1. By default, the HCM in the
slot labeled HCM0 is the master.
NOTE: When HCM mastership changes because of failure, Routing Engine mastership will
change as well.
The HCM performs the following functions:

Monitoring and control of router componentsThe HCM collects statistics from all
sensors in the system. When it detects a failure or alarm condition, it sends a signal
to the Routing Engine, which generates control messages or sets an alarm. The HCM
also relays control messages from the Routing Engine to the router components.
Controlling component power-up and power-downThe HCM controls the power-up
sequence of router components as they start and powers down components when
their offline buttons are pressed.
Signaling of mastershipin a router with more than one Routing Engine, the HCM
signals to all router components which Routing Engine is the master and which is the
standby.
Alarm displayif an alarm exists, the HCM displays the alarm condition.

PIC removalIf a PIC offline button is pressed, the HCM relays the request to the
CFEB or CFEB-E, which takes the PIC offline and informs the Routing Engine. Other
PICs are unaffected, and system operation continues.

Midplane performs the following

The midplane is located in the center of the chassis and forms the rear of the FPC card cage.
The FPCs install into the midplane from the front of the chassis, and the FEBs, Routing
Engines, power supplies, and CBs install into the midplane from the rear of the chassis. The
power supplies and cooling system components also connect to the midplane.
The midplane performs the following major functions:

Data pathData packets are transferred across the midplane between an FPC and its
associated FEB, and between the FEBs via the fabric ASICs on the CB.
Power distributionthe router power supplies are connected to the midplane, which
distributes power to all the router components.

Signal paththe midplane provides the signal path to the FPCs, FEBs, Routing
Engines, CB, and other system components for monitoring and control of the system.

Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs)

The Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs) provide the infrastructure to power and control PICs
and to translate packets to and from each PIC into a standard interface that the FEB
processes.
Each Packet Forwarding Engine receives incoming packets from the PICs installed on the
FPC and forwards them through the switch planes (located in CB???) to the appropriate
destination FPC and port. Yes ok
Each FPC contains data memory, which is managed by the Queuing and Memory Interface
ASICs, and either one or two Packet Forwarding Engines. Each FPC contains a translator, a
crossbar connection to the FEBs, power subsystem, and the physical PIC connectors. The
assembly contains a translation component that converts between the midplane signals and
the signals required by the types of supported PICs. The translator fully terminates the PIC
side connection, providing local flow control, buffering, and electrical conversion. FPCs are
hot-removable and hot-insertable.

Compact FPCs (CFPCs) Description

A CFPC is a combination of a PIC and an FPC. It contains the interface circuitry and the FPC
as a single assembly. Two CFPCs are available for the M120 router: a 10-Gigabit Ethernet
CFPC and an OC192 CFPC. Each CFPC is rated at 10 Gbps full duplex.
Forwarding Engine Boards (FEBs) (In other platform in place of FEB, FPC contains
forwarding plane???)
The M120 router provides redundant Forwarding Engine Boards (FEBs). The FPC (the board
that hosts the PICs) is separate from the FEB (the board that handles the packets). FEBs
provide route lookup and forwarding functions from FPCs and CFPCs. FPCs and CFPCs are
located on the front of the chassis, and provide power and management to the PICs through
the midplane. The midplane relays signals to the FEB (inserted from the rear of the chassis,
which processes the packets.
The midplane architecture allows any FEB to carry traffic for any FPC. You can configure the
mapping of FPCs to FEBs. If a FEB fails, a backup FEB can quickly take over packet
forwarding. (How????)

Routing Engine
The Routing Engine runs the Junos OS. The software processes that run on the Routing
Engine maintain the routing tables, manage the routing protocols used on the router, control
the router interfaces, control some chassis components, and provide the interface for
system management and user access to the router.
You can install one or two Routing Engines in the router. The Routing Engines install into the
rear of the chassis in vertical slots directly into the CB labeled CB0 and CB1. If two Routing
Engines are installed, one functions as the master and the other acts as the backup. If the
master Routing Engine fails or is removed, and the backup is configured appropriately, the
backup takes over as the master.

Control Board (CB)

Each CB works with an installed Routing Engine to provide control and monitoring functions
for the router. These functions include determining Routing Engine mastership; controlling
power and reset for the other router components; connecting the FEBs and FPCs;
monitoring and controlling fan speed; and monitoring system status.
You can install one or two CBs in the router. The CBs install vertically into the rear of the
chassis in the slots labeled CB0 and CB1. If two CBs are installed, one functions as the
master CB and the other as its backup. If the master fails or is removed, the backup
restarts and becomes the master.

With redundant CBs, the backup CB is hot-removable and hot-insertable, but the master CB
is hot-pluggable. If a CB fails and switches mastership to the redundant CB, the Routing
Engine mastership switches as well.

Enhanced FPCs
Enhanced Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs) are available for the M20, M40, and T320
routers and the T640 routing node. An Enhanced FPC has all the features of the
corresponding standard (nonenhanced) FPC and provides additional SRAM memory for
increased scalability and more granular class-of-service (CoS) capabilities.
Enhanced Plus FPCs
Enhanced plus Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs) are available for the M20 and M40e
routers. An Enhanced Plus FPC has all the features of the corresponding standard
(nonenhanced) FPC and provides additional SRAM memory (from 2 to 4 MB on an Enhanced
Plus FPC1 and 4 to 8 MB on an Enhanced Plus FPC2) for increased scalability, more granular
CoS capabilities, and enhanced VPN scaling.
Enhanced II FPCs
Enhanced II Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs) are available for the M320, T320, and T640
routing platforms. An Enhanced II FPC has all the features of the corresponding standard
and Enhanced FPCs and provides additional DRAM memory for QoS, tricolor marking, and
scaling enhancements.
Enhanced Scaling FPC
Enhanced scaling Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs) are available for the T640 routing node.
An Enhanced Scaling FPC has all the features of the corresponding standard and Enhanced
FPCs and provides additional forwarding features and scalability improvements. The
Enhanced Scaling FPC4 is compatible with all currently supported T640 FPC1, FPC2, and
FPC3 PIC combinations.
The Packet Forwarding Engine receives incoming packets from the PICs installed on the FPC
and forwards them through the switch planes to the appropriate destination port. Each FPC

contains a memory subsystem (MMB) that is managed by the Queuing and Memory
Interface ASICs.
Switch Interface Board (SIB)
The Switch Interface Boards (SIBs) provide the switching function to the destination FPC.
The SIBs create the switch fabric for the router, providing up to a total of 385 million
packets per second (Mpps) of forwarding with the maximum configuration.
SIBs are located at the center rear of the router chassis in the slots labeled SIB0 through
SIB3 (top to bottom). The M320 router can be configured with two, three, or four SIBs. You
can upgrade from two to three SIBs or from three to four SIBs without resetting or stopping
Packet Forwarding Engines.
Each FPC has a dedicated ASIC with up to four high-speed links that connect to the SIBs
(one link per SIB).
SIBs are hot-insertable and hot-removable.

Host Subsystem Description (What is equivalent hardware in other platforms and where
it is physically located) ok it is the combination of RE and CB
The host subsystem consists of a Routing Engine functioning together with a control board.
The router can have one or two host subsystems.
The host subsystem provides the routing and system management functions of the router.
You can install one or two host subsystems on the router. To operate, each host subsystem
functions as a unit; the Routing Engine requires the corresponding Control Board (CB) and
vice versa.
NOTE: We recommend that you install two host subsystems for redundant protection. If you
install only one host subsystem, we recommend that you install it in slot RE0.

MX5 router: Allows usage of the Modular Interface Cards (MIC) slot labeled 1/MIC 0, which
comes prepopulated with the Gigabit Ethernet MIC with SFP.

MX10 router: Allows usage of the Modular Interface Cards (MIC) slot labeled 1/MIC 0, which
comes prepopulated with the Gigabit Ethernet MIC with SFP and the second MIC slot labeled
1/MIC 1.

MX40 router: Allows usage of both Modular Interface Cards (MIC) slots and ports 0 and 1 of
the built-in 10-Gigabit Ethernet MIC (labeled 0/MIC 0).

MX80 router: Allows usage of both Modular Interface Cards (MIC) slots and all four ports of
the built-in 10-Gigabit Ethernet MIC (labeled 0/MIC 0). A fixed version of the MX80 router
(model number: MX80-48T) has 48 fixed 10/100/1000Base-T RJ45 ports in place of the MIC
slots.

NOTE: The port labeled CLOCK provides 10 Mhz output. The port labeled SYNC provides 1
PPS output.
Baseboard Description (Is it same as midplane???) yes
The baseboard is located in the center of the chassis and forms the rear of the MIC card
cage. The baseboard is not replaceable. The MICs and power supplies install into the
baseboard from the front of the chassis. Data packets are transferred across the baseboard
from the MIC to the Packet Forwarding Engine, and from the Packet Forwarding Engine
across the baseboard to the destination MIC. The baseboard provides the following
functions:

Powers on and powers off MICs

Controls clocking, system resets, and booting
Monitors and controls system functions, including fan speed, board power status,
PDM status and control, and the front panel
Provides interconnections to all the MICs within the chassis

Modular Interface Card Description (Is it same as PIC in M Series???) ok yes

Modular Interface Cards (MICs) provide the physical connections to various network media
types. MICs receive incoming packets from the network and transmit outgoing packets to
the network. During this process, each MIC performs framing and high-speed signaling for
its media type. Before transmitting outgoing data packets through the MIC interfaces, the
router encapsulates the packets received.
On the fixed MX80 chassis, the MICs come preinstalled and cannot be replaced.
On the modular MX5, MX10, MX40, and MX80 chassis, MICs install into two slots in the front
of the router.
The Services PIC slot located in the rear of the chassis is currently not supported.

Front-Pluggable MICs:
You can install and remove MICs in the MX5, MX10, MX40, and modular MX80 chassis. The
MIC slots are labeled 1/MIC 0 and 1/MIC 1. Each MIC slot has an ejector handle located
above the MIC slot.
You can install MICs of different media types as long as the router supports those MICs.
Fixed (Built-in) MICs - Built-in 10-Gigabit Ethernet MIC:
The built-in 10-Gigabit Ethernet MIC is fixed on the MX5, MX10, MX40, and MX80 routers.
The MIC is labeled 0/MIC 0 and is located on the front panel.
Built-in Tri-Rate MIC The built-in 48-port Tri-Rate MIC is available only on the fixed MX80
chassis (MX80-48T) and is not replaceable.

The chassis has two built-in MPCs (Modular Port Concentrators), which are represented in
the CLI as FPC 0 and FPC 1.
MPC 0 (FPC 0) contains a 4-port 10-Gigabit Ethernet MIC. Both the MPC and the MIC are
considered fixed and are built into the front of the chassis. The MIC is represented as MIC 0
in the CLI and is logically divided into a single PIC, which is represented as PIC 0.
MPC 1 (FPC 1) has two slots, which accept up to two MICs. The MICs are represented as
MIC 0 and MIC 1 in the CLI and are logically divided into PICs depending on their type. A
MIC installed in MIC slot 1/0 is represented in the CLI as PIC 0 and PIC 1. A MIC installed in
MIC slot 1/1 is represented as PIC 2 and PIC 3.

MPC 0 (FPC 0) contains a 4-port 10-Gigabit Ethernet MIC and is built into the front of the
chassis. The MIC is represented as MIC 0 in the CLI and is logically divided into a single PIC,
which is represented as PIC 0.
MPC 1 (FPC 1) contains a 48-port Tri-Rate MIC and is built into the front of the chassis. The
MIC is represented as MIC 0 in the CLI and is logically divided into four PICs, which are
numbered 0 through 3. Each logical PIC on the built-in Tri-Rate MIC contains twelve ports,
which are numbered 0 through 11.
Routing Engine Description
The Routing Engine is built-in on the MX5, MX10, MX40, and MX80 baseboard and cannot be
replaced.

MX480
The connections between DPCs, FPCs, MPCs, and SCBs are organized in three groups:

Switch fabricconnects the interface cards and provides for packet transport
between DPCs, FPCs, and MPCs.
Control planeGigabit Ethernet links between the combined SCBs/Routing Engines
and each DPC, FPC, or MPC. All board-to-board information is passed over Ethernet
except for low-level status and commands.
Management signalsProvide for low-level status diagnostic support.

Midplane Description
The midplane is located toward the rear of the chassis and forms the rear of the card cage.
The line cards and SCBs install into the midplane from the front of the chassis, and the
power supplies install into the midplane from the rear of the chassis. The cooling system
components also connect to the midplane.
The midplane performs the following major functions:

Data pathData packets are transferred across the midplane between the line cards
through the fabric ASICs on the SCBs.
Power distributionthe router power supplies connect to the midplane, which
distributes power to all the router components.
Signal paththe midplane provides the signal path to the line cards, SCBs, Routing
Engines, and other system components for monitoring and control of the system.

Dense Port Concentrator (DPC)

A Dense Port Concentrator (DPC) is optimized for Ethernet density. The DPC assembly
combines packet forwarding and Ethernet interfaces on a single board, with either two or
four 10-Gbps Packet Forwarding Engines. Each Packet Forwarding Engine consists of one Ichip for Layer 3 processing and one Layer 2 network processor. The DPCs interface with the
power supplies and Switch Control Boards (SCBs). DPCs are hot-removable and hotinsertable.
Modular Port Concentrator (MPC)
Modular Port Concentrators (MPCs) provide packet forwarding services. The MPCs are
inserted into a slot in a router. Modular Interface Cards (MICs) provide the physical
interfaces and install into the MPCs. You can install up to two MICs of different media types
on the same MPC as long as the MPC supports those MICs.
A specialized fixed configuration MPC provides higher port density over MICs and combines
packet forwarding and Ethernet interfaces onto a single line card. The fixed configuration
MPC is inserted into a slot in a router and contains no slots for MICs.

MICs receive incoming packets from the network and transmit outgoing packets to the
network. During this process, each MIC performs framing and high-speed signaling for its
media type. Before transmitting outgoing data packets through the MIC interfaces, the MPCs
encapsulate the packets received. Each MPC is equipped with up to four Junos Trio chipsets,
which perform control functions tailored to the MPCs media type. The MPCs interface with
the power supplies and Switch Control Boards (SCBs). You must install redundant SCBs to
support full line-rate. MPCs are hot-removable and hot-insertable.
Modular Interface Card (MIC)
Modular Interface Cards (MICs) install into Modular Port Concentrators (MPCs) and provide
the physical connections to various network media types. MICs allow different physical
interfaces to be supported on a single line card. You can install MICs of different media
types on the MPC as long as the MPC supports those MICs.
MICs receive incoming packets from the network and transmit outgoing packets to the
network. During this process, each MIC performs framing and high-speed signaling for its
media type. Before transmitting outgoing data packets through the MIC interfaces, the MPCs
encapsulate the packets received.
MICs are hot-removable and hot-insertable. You can install up to two MICs in the slots in
each MPC.
Flexible PIC Concentrator (FPC)
A Flexible PIC Concentrator (FPC) occupies two DPC slots on an MX Series router. The router
has six dedicated DPC slots that are numbered 0 through 5, bottom to top. Up to three FPCs
can be installed horizontally on the front of the router the interface corresponds to the
lowest numbered DPC slot for which the FPC is installed.
Each FPC supports up to two PICs. On an FPC2, one Packet Forwarding Engine receives
incoming packets from the PICs installed on the FPC and forwards them through the switch
planes to the appropriate destination port. On an FPC3, two Packet Forwarding Engines
receive incoming packets from the PICs installed on the FPC and forwards them through the
switch planes to the appropriate destination port. The FPCs interface with the power
supplies and SCBs. FPCs are hot-removable and hot-insertable.

PIC Description
PICs provide the physical connection to various network media types, receiving incoming
packets from the network and transmitting outgoing packets to the network. During this
process, each PIC performs framing and line-speed signaling for its media type. Before
transmitting outgoing data packets, the PICs encapsulate the packets received from the
FPCs. Each PIC is equipped with an ASIC that performs control functions specific to the
media type of that PIC.

Switch Control Board (SCB) Description
The Switch Control Board (SCB) provides the following functions:

Powers on and powers off DPCs, FPCs, and MPCs

Controls clocking, system resets, and booting
Monitors and controls system functions, including fan speed, board power status,
PDM status and control, and the craft interface

Provides interconnections to all the DPCs, FPCs, and MPCs within the chassis through
the switch fabrics integrated into the SCB. (Same as CB in M120???) ok Yes

The Routing Engine installs directly into a slot on the SCB

Enhanced Switch Control Board Description
The Enhanced MX Switch Control Board (MX SCBE) serves the carrier Ethernet services
router and carrier Ethernet transport markets that require higher-capacity traffic support
demanding greater interface density (slot and capacity scale), as well as improved services.
The upgraded SCB is supported on MX960, MX480, and MX240 routers. Some key attributes
of the Enhanced MX SCB are:

160 Gbps/slot bandwidth with redundant fabric support, and improved fabric
performance by using the next-generation fabric (XF) chip
A central clocking module and a centralized clocking architecture that supports clock
cleanup and distribution. The Stratum 3 clock module performs clock monitoring,
filtering, and holdover in a centralized chassis location
Full performance with fabric redundancy for higher capacity line cards such as
16x10GE and MPC3

The Routing Engine installs directly into a slot on the MX SCBE. If two MX SCBEs are
installed, one MX SCBE functions as the master MX SCBE and the other as its backup. If the
master fails or is removed, the backup restarts and becomes the master.

Routing Engine
Software processes that run on the Routing Engine maintain the routing tables, manage the
routing protocols used on the router, control the router interfaces, control some chassis
components, and provide the interface for system management and user access to the
router.
You can install one or two Routing Engines in the router. The Routing Engines install into the
front of the chassis in horizontal slots in the SCBs labeled 0 and 1. If two Routing Engines
are installed, one functions as the master and the other acts as the backup. If the master
Routing Engine fails or is removed, and the backup is configured appropriately, the backup
takes over as the master. The Routing Engines are hot-pluggable.

Host subsystem (Is it same as M320???) ok Yes

The host subsystem provides the routing and system management functions of the router.
You can install one or two host subsystems on the router. Each host subsystem functions as
a unit; the Routing Engine must be installed directly into the Switch Control Board.
The host subsystem consists of a Routing Engine functioning together with an SCB. The
router can have one or two host subsystems. If two host subsystems are installed, one
functions as the master and the other functions as the backup. If the master host
subsystem (or either of its components) fails, the backup can take over as the master. To
operate, each host subsystem requires a Routing Engine installed directly into in an SCB.
If the Routing Engines are configured for graceful switchover, the backup Routing Engine
automatically synchronizes its configuration and state with the master Routing Engine. Any
update to the master Routing Engine state is replicated on the backup Routing Engine. If the
backup Routing Engine assumes mastership, packet forwarding continues through the router
without interruption.

T640

Midplane Description
The T640 Core Router midplane is located in the center of the chassis and forms the rear of
the FPC card cage. The FPCs install into the midplane from the front of the chassis, and the
SIBs, Routing Engines, control boards, and SCGs install into the midplane from the rear of

the chassis. The power supplies and cooling system components also connect to the
midplane.
The midplane performs the following major functions:

Data pathData packets are transferred across the midplane from the Packet
Forwarding Engine on the originating FPC to the SIBs, and from the SIBs across the
midplane to the Packet Forwarding Engine on the destination FPC.
Power distributionthe router power supplies are connected to the midplane, which
distributes power to all the router components.
Signal paththe midplane provides the signal path to the FPCs, SIBs, Routing
Engines, and control boards, and other system components for monitoring and
control of the system.

Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs)

Each FPC contains one or two Packet Forwarding Engines. The Packet Forwarding Engines
receive incoming packets from the PICs installed on the FPC and forward them through the
switch planes to the appropriate destination port. Each FPC contains data memory that is

managed by the Queuing and Memory Interface ASICs. FPCs are hot-removable and hotinsertable
FPC Terminology:

PIC Description
PICs provide the physical connection to various network media types, receiving incoming
packets from the network and transmitting outgoing packets to the network. During this
process, each PIC performs framing and line-speed signaling for its media type. Before
transmitting outgoing data packets, the PICs encapsulate the packets received from the
FPCs. Each PIC is equipped with an ASIC that performs control functions specific to the
media type of that PIC.
PICs are hot-removable and hot-insertable. You can install up to four PICs in the slots of
each Type 1, 2, and 3 FPC, and one PIC in a Type 4 FPC.

Switch Interface Boards (SIBs)

The Switch Interface Boards (SIBs) provide the switching function to the destination FPC
The SIBs create the switch fabric for the router, providing up to a total of 640 million
packets per second (Mpps) of forwarding. Five SIBs are installed in the router. The SIBs are
located at the center rear of the chassis in the slots labeled SIB0 through SIB4 (top to
bottom).
SIBs are hot-insertable and hot-removable.
One of the five SIBsusually SIB4acts as a backup to the remaining four SIBs. If a SIB
fails, the backup SIB becomes active and traffic forwarding continues without any
degradation. When the failed SIB is replaced, it becomes the new backup.

Each FPC has two dedicated ASICs, and each ASIC has five highspeed links that connect to the SIBs (a total of 10 links).
Each FPC has one dedicated ASIC with ten high-speed links that

connect to the SIBs (two links per SIB).

The T640 router supports these types of SIBs:

Standard SIB.
Standard SIB version B (supported in Junos OS Release 7.3 and later)required to
support the Enhanced Scaling FPCs in a standalone T640 router. If you use one or
more Enhanced Scaling FPCs in a T640 router that is not part of a routing matrix,
each SIB in the router must be a SIB version B. All the SIBs in the T640 router can
be either standard SIB or SIB version B. You cannot use both on the same router at
the same time.
The T640-SIB (supported in Junos OS Release 7.0 and later) is required to support
T640 routers connected to a TX Matrix platform. The T640-SIB supports the
Enhanced Scaling FPC4 for T640 routers connected to a TX Matrix platform.

Host Subsystem (Is it same as M320???)
The host subsystem provides the routing and system management functions of the router.
You can install one or two host subsystems on the router. To operate, each host subsystem
functions as a unit; the Routing Engine requires the corresponding control board, and vice
versa.
Routing Engine Description
The Routing Engine runs Junos OS. The software processes that run on the Routing Engine
maintain the routing tables, manage the routing protocols used on the router, control the
router interfaces, control some chassis components, and provide the interface for system
management and user access to the router.

SONET Clock Generators (SCGs)

The SONET Clock Generators (SCGs) provide 19.44-MHz Stratum 3 clock signal for the
SONET/SDH interfaces on the router. One SCG is shipped as part of the standard router
configuration, but up to two SCGs can be installed to provide redundancy. SCGs are installed
into the upper rear of the chassis in the slots labeled SCG0 and SCG1.
Backup SCGs are hot-removable and hot-insertable. Master and nonredundant SCGs are
hot-pluggable.
NOTE: Redundant SCGs must be the same model number, except during upgrade.
