Super Snow Dog Takes Top Photo Prize

By Katie McFadden

The nice weather on Saturday couldnt sway the power

of a super dog in the snow.
Michael Rudins photo of his
dog Walter on a snowy winter
beach day took the top prize
in the first ever Rockaway
Times photo contest.
This weeks cover features
Rudins prize-winning photo.
Not only does Rudin get frontpage recognition for his photogenic pooch, he also takes
homes the $500 grand prize.
Im excited to be selected as
the winner of the Rockaway
Times Photo contest. Thanks
to everyone who voted and
the Rockaway Times for hosting this great contest, Rudin
said.
Rudin is no amateur behind
the lens. Hes a professional commercial, lifestyle and
food photographer who studied at the Brooks Institute of
Photography in Santa Barbara, CA. Much of his work
can be found on his website,

Michael Rudin

www.michaelrudin.com and
his Instagram account: thefatiris. Walter, Rudins pointer, is one of his popular subjects and even has his own
Instagram account: walterthepointer. Rudin says both
he and his wife post to the
account that portrays the life
of their beloved rescue dog
around Rockaway. I would
like to say mildly obsessed.

My wife would beg to differ,

Rudin said about the subject
of the account, which has
more than 1,300 followers.
Rudin spoke about the winning shot of Walter, saying,
That was Walters first winter in Rockaway. He wanted
to be on the beach no matter
what the weather was like.
We hit our limit long before
he would and the only time
he wouldnt want to go out to
hit the beach is if it was nine
degrees or lower. Even if it
was ten degrees, forget it, he
wanted to be on the beach.
Walter took a long walk to
become top dog. The photo
was one of more than 300 that
were submitted to the first
Rockaway Times photo contest, which was spearheaded
by columnist and Rockaway
activist John Cori. The contest was open to amateurs
and experts and people could
submit photos to 10 different categories, including 1)
Sunsets/ sunrise 2) jetties
3) surfing/surfers 4) family/

Wildcard (doesnt fit any of
the categories, but its a great
photo). The contest was open
from January until April 15.
On May 1, all of the photos
were put on display at Playland Motel and three judges
were given the job of selecting the top three in each category. The top 30 semifinalists
moved on to the next round,
where they were displayed in
frames and mounted to the
boardwalk over Memorial
Day weekend and on June 4
and 5. Cori worked with Portia Dyrenforth of the Parks
Department to get permission for the boardwalk display, which was a big hit and
even got a spotlight on NY1.
On Saturday, June 4, the
public was able to cast their

The Rockaway Groan

Every now and then we put
Public Service Announcements in
the paper. You know, get screened
for this cancer or that. Eat your
vegetables and brush your teeth.
This is the annual Please Dont
Invite Us To Anything Over The
Summer announcement that you
hope friends and family who live
off the peninsula will read.
Its necessary to basically reprint
the column each year because you
dont want mainlanders thinking
maybe were cracking, giving in

to the idea that wed be okay with

leaving Rockaway for a day trip.
And for those who live here, its a
reminder to be careful with invitations. If you invite family and
friends down during the off-season you can bet theyll reciprocate
in the summer, the worst time of
the year to leave the beach.
If you want to celebrate your
kids birthday who happened to
be born in January, celebrate it in
July. Keep the January date classified. If a nephew or niece was

born in the summer and the family lives on the Island, New Jersey
or Connecticut, get out in front
and suggest a beach day. Tell
them to come here.
They will see through your blatant, outrageous attempt to avoid
leaving Rockaway. They may
hate you for it. But theres a good
chance theyll accept, so do it.
Couples marry for love in Rockaway but if its a mixed marriage
(one family in Rockaway and
the other anywhere else) theres
gotta be a pre-nup. Marriage
pre-nups are written not over
finances but over leaving the
beach during June, July, and
August. Honey, I love you and
your family but theres no way
were visiting them in the summer. And we have to put that in
writing.
We live and enjoy Rockaway
for five months a year. Theres the
big three and May and September. The other seven months we
endure. Its the price of paradise.
Those who dont live here just
dont appreciate how those five
months are ours. We do not want
to leave. Even when we vacation
during those five good months

Page 5
we are happy to get back. If you
vacation during the summer you
cannot impress anyone here, no
matter how spectacular your trip
was. You vacation somewhere
warm in the winter and people
here have extreme envy. They
want you to tell them more so
they might feel a wave of vicarious
warmth.
You vacation in the summer
and no one cares. You might have
gone somewhere amazing but you
missed Rockaway. Your amazing
trip gets stuck with an asterisk. You
cant brag. No one cares.
We are protective of our five
measly months. We do not want
anything intruding on summer
glory.
You might be invited to a party or barbecue at a Hamptons
mansion but you will not be happy. You will be stuck in traffic
both ways. You will wonder what
youre missing back in Rockaway.
You utter The Rockaway Groan:
I gotta leave Rockaway for this?
I gotta leave Rockaway to sit in
someones backyard?
So, a word to the wise, careful
with your invitations. And heres
hoping this column travels.

Wind Energy Development Site Up for Lease

By Katie McFadden

The wind is moving in

the right direction. On June
2, the US Bureau of Ocean
Energy Management announced it will offer 81,130
acres of federal waters for
lease for offshore wind energy development off the
Rockaways, which would
be enough to support a
large scale commercial
wind project.
The Department of Interiors BOEM published
a Proposed Sale Notice for
Commercial Leasing for
Wind Power to the Federal
Register on June 6, as well as
an Environmental Assessment (EA) which considers
potential impacts associated with the lease. The area
up for lease is off the coast
of Rockaway and about 11
miles south of Long Beach.
This area was identified by
the BOEM as a Wind Energy Area (WEA) on March
16 and is one of 12 Atlantic

sites identified by BOEM as

WEAs potentially suitable
for development.
This is another major
step in broadening our nations energy portfolio, harnessing power near population centers on the East
Coast, U.S. Secretary of the
Interior Sally Jewell said in
a press release. Offshore
wind power marks a new
frontier in renewable energy development, creating
the path for sustainable
electricity generation; job
creation, and strengthening our nations economic competitiveness. I
am optimistic about New
Yorks renewable energy
future, as we work toward
harnessing the enormous
resource potential of wind
energy offshore the Empire State.
The Proposed Sale Notice document for the New
York site provides detailed
information about the
lease area, the proposed

lease provisions and conditions, auction details

and lease execution. It is
open to public comment
for 60 days and interested
companies will have until
August 5 to submit a lease
qualification package, before a Final Sale Notice
is published, which will
have details on the time
and date of the lease sale.
BOEM hopes to hold an
auction by the end of the
year. The Proposed Sale
Notice can be found by
searching BOEM-20160027 and the EA can
be found by searching
BOEM-2016-0038 on the
Federal Register at www.
regulations.gov.
So far seven companies
have qualified, including a
NYPA-LIPA-ConEd group,
Beautiful Earth Partners,
Deepwater Wind, EDF,
Fishermens Energy, Energy Management Inc and
Sea Breeze Energy. The
New York State Energy Re-

Green space marks the proposed wind development area.

search and Development

Authority (NYSERDA) has
also expressed interest in
qualifying.
BOEM will hold four
public meetings in late
June to provide a rundown
of the EA findings and to
allow for public comment.
These meetings include
Long Branch, N.J. (June 20),
Hempstead, N.Y. (June 21),
West Hampton Beach, N.Y.
(June 22), and Narragansett, RI (June 23). Specific
information about each

meeting and more information about the Proposed

Sale Notice and Environmental Assessment can be
found at www.boem.gov/
New-York/
This proposed wind development sale falls in line
with Governor Andrew
Cuomos Clean Energy
Standard, which he announced earlier this year,
establishing a goal for the
state to source 50 percent of
New Yorks electric energy
from renewables by 2030.

*****
You might have seen the story
about a boat in distress in Jamaica
Bay using a cork from an Absolut
vodka bottle to plug a hole and
avert disaster. Well, another detail
emerged: said cork was supplied
by Bob Leckie of The Wharf. Bob
knows the bar business but he
knows his way around boats, too.
*****
Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder
announced that he wont be
running for re-election.
We
always thought hed stay in office
until he landed on the front page
of The Rockaway Times (it was so
easy for him to do that in other
Queens papers!). He used to
tell us he couldnt compete with
sunsets. Sorry Phil this week its
a dog!
*****
As far as who might succeed
Phil, Stacey Amato has already
declared interest and others are

sure to emerge. Stacey, by the way,

is the daughter of Audrey Pheffer,
longtime Assemblywoman and
now the Queens County Clerk.
We hear Phils former Chief of
Staff, Angelica Katz, is eyeing a
run as well. It might put Phil in
a tough spot when it comes to
supporting a successor. Audrey
Pheffer groomed Phil so hes got
that loyalty; but Angelica was his
right hand for years.
*****
And Dan Guarino said hed
been contacted about running
but that might be for another day,
another race. A primary is right
around the corner. Let the fun
begin!
*****
Fun stuff came via a columnist
coincidence last week.
Lou
Pastina pointed out if you look
out to the ocean from Rockaway
youre looking south (not towards
England or Ireland but more like
Cuba or Haiti). Alex Karinsky
in Tubular Views relayed a story
about being asked by some PEP
officers about the land mass to
the south west also known as New
Jersey. They wanted to know if it
was Europe. Lou also wondered

if Noreasters came from the

northeast or blew towards the
northeast. Someone will set us
straight but we know this: if the
wind is blowing at you from the
ocean thats an onshore wind.
*****
We have to again congratulate
everyone for their photo contest
submissions. We were blown
away by the talent of so many
locals. John Cori went above and
beyond and made the contest
really special as he framed and
posted the 30 semifinalists photos
along the boardwalk railings. The
public art thrilled beachgoers
over a couple of weekends. The
Parks Department and Portia
Dyrenforth get a big thumbs up
for helping as well. Michael Rudin
won the Grand Prize of $500 for
his photo (and he got front page
glory this week!) Cant wait til
next year!
*****
Speaking of contests, theres a
strong rumor that Katie McFadden
will be spearheading a Sandcastle
Building Contest. Get down in the
sand and do some practicing with
pails and shovels. Stay tuned for
more details.

The Lazer Speaks

DREAMS
By Lou Pastina

Have you ever had one of

those dreams where you are
familiar with the surroundings but everybody in the
dream looks unfamiliar? For
instance, I recently had one
where I was in church here in
Rockaway at a Mass, but as I
looked around I realized that
I did not know anyone. The
faces looked slightly familiar
but not enough to actually realize whom anyone was. Psychologists would probably
have a field day with me!
I remember older Italians
telling me stories in Brooklyn that they believed those
dream sequences had something to do with the dead.
Spooky stuff, and very superstitious, but in my dreams the
people werent dead, I just
had no idea who they were,
or why I was a stranger in my
own church.

This was not one of those

dreams where you cant seem
to run away because your legs
wont move. I have had those
dreams. The mermaid usually has to stop me from thrashing about with a midnight
slap to the head. And then
there are those dreams where
something really bad is going
to happen and I am a witness to it but I cant seem to
scream out to warn anyone.
Those dreams usually have
me attempting to scream in
my sleep, which comes out
as a series of weird grunts.
These dreams are accompanied by an even bigger slap
to the head by the flippered
one.
Many years ago when the
kids were young I took them
to Mass on a Sunday night.
It was late summer, that
time when the Mass schedule changes from 7 pm back

to 6 pm. When that would

happen, the church would
accommodate the Polish
speaking community with
a Mass in Polish. When the
congregation marched down
the aisle with the red and
white flag with the eagle on
it, I knew then before a word
was spoken that the schedule
had changed and I missed
it. But I decided to be quiet
and to see if the kids noticed.
About half way through, after
speaking Polish for the opening prayers and the Gospel,
one of the youngins looked
up and finally said, Hey
what are they saying?!
I always wondered whether
this was one of those dream
sequences for the kids. We
were in a familiar place, however everyone in the church
was unfamiliar, and it was
in a different language! But
rather than thrash about, or
attempt to scream out, they

just looked up about half

way through and said what
gives? I guess that probably explains the difference
between baby boomers and
millennials. And why I am
the one in need of psychiatric
help!
At least I have outgrown the
dreams about vampires. As a
kid my mom and uncle would
always take me to see the famous Hammer vampire films
with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. I loved them but
it caused me to sleep with a
silver cross by my bed, just in
case. At least in those dreams
I recognized whom I was
with: vampires!
So if you see me walking
around Rockaway attempting
to run or scream but unable
to do so, just slap me in the
head; but under no circumstances attempt to bite me in
the neck, I will sprinkle you
with Holy Water!

Josephine Joan Cotter of Rockaway Beach passed away on

June 5, 2016.
For over 91 years, she brought love and laughter to this world as a daughter, sister, wife,
mother, grandmother, treasured friend, storyteller, and amateur piano and harmonica player.
Guided by her unwavering Catholic faith and an unparalleled ability
to find laughter amidst sadness, she lived a remarkable liferaising a
family on her own an ocean away from her native Ireland. Joan was at
her happiest when in the company of her six children, eleven grandchildren, and countless friends. She could not walk down the streets
of Rockaway without running into one of the many adopted children
who considered her family.
Joan never let illness or hardship dim her spirit, beauty, or sense of
humor. Her family and friends will miss her twinkling blue eyes, Irish
brogue, and hearty laughter, but know that she is happy to be in
heaven where she is reunited with her family, including her beloved
son Patrick and cherished grandson Brian. She is survived by her
loving children Richard, Barry, Sean, Jim and Claire Cotter, and Mary
and Ken OMara; her adoring grandchildren Chris, Lauren, Tara,
Brian, Sean, Danielle, Kathleen, Ryan, Eliza, and Jim; and the many
other family and friends whose lives she touched.

Visitation will be held at

Weigand Brothers Funeral Home in Williston Park

A funeral mass will be held at St. Aidan's Church

on Friday, June 10 at 11:45AM. In lieu of flowers,

SUPER SNOW DOG

votes for their top three favorite photos by simply placing stickers on their favorites.
Saturday helped us narrow
it down. People were very enthusiastic and excited to be
a part of the process, Cori
said. The public narrowed it

down to three finalists. They

were Nancy Hermans Surfer at Sunset, Timmy Burkes
Bike Reflection and of course,
Rudins Dog in the Snow. On
Sunday, June 5 at Caracas,
four judges, including Jose
Velez from Community Board
14, ferry activist Joe Hartigan,
Rachel Krieger from Yoga on
the Rocks and photographer

By Timmy Burke

By Nancy Herman

Marta Roginski, were given the tough task of picking

the winner. The judges were
given time to examine the
photos and write down their
favorites on a card. It was a
close call with Velez voting
for the bike photo and Hartigan choosing the sunset surfer, but Krieger and Roginskis
votes, both for the snow dog,
made Rudin our big winner.
The contests boardwalk
display was so well received,
that Cori hopes to do something similar later this sum-

mer and feature surfing photos around the surf beach.

Theres no contest, but photographers are welcome to
print their surf photos in 11
x 14 for the display (Contact
John at seathenight@aol.
com for info). I think people
just love seeing art and thats
something Id like to promote more of. Its nice to give
photographers recognition,
Cori said. As for next years
contest, Cori said, its a lot
of work but were absolutely
going to do it again.

the Doughboy Monument standing guard over the Rockaway Time
Capsule with a fixed bayonet!
The time capsule was buried behind and to the right of the monument at Beach 94th Street and
Rockaway Beach Boulevard in the
fall of 1986. It is to be dug up and
opened in the fall of 2086.
Many Rockawayites contributed material such as family records
to fill the capsule. The capsule
was contributed by The Denis S.
OConnor Funeral Parlor, and it has
a sealed concrete casket protector.
The day of the capsule being filled, a great ceremony and
speeches took place with entertainment supplied by the Parks Department on a mobile grandstand.
All information was turned over
to the Peninsula Library on Beach
94th street for safekeeping and

guardianship of the capsule site.

Unfortunately, Super Storm
Sandy wiped out the library! So, if
anyone reading this column has
photographs of the event, please
send them to the Rockaway Times.
All information will be given to the
Library Staff for their caretaking
purpose. Thank you!!!

Looking For A Glow

beach erosion and the need to
complete that never ending
study on how to prevent massive
erosion of the ocean shores of our
peninsula.
Phils commitment to tackle issues such as tolls, studies, beach
and bay issues and a commitment to fight for better education
for our kids and a general concern for the heath of all families
is the cornerstone of Phils time
while serving for us.
The most important question
to gauge Phils success while
working for us: is the peninsula
a better place than when he began? And the answer is a very big
YES!!!

Im sure this is starting to sound

like an obituary, when it is really
about the glow of commitment
to his constituents and more importantly, his family! Thanks Phil
for your time, talent and friendship and thanks for keeping your
glow!
Now we all wonder who will fill
in for Phil as our representative
in the NYS Assembly. I remember it once written somewhere
by Kevin Boyle, that there must
be more than one Phil Golfeder,
there was no way one man could
make and support so many community meetings and events! This
must be true for Phils successor
as well.
I know I will personally expect
those who believe they are worthy to fill Phils shoes to have given the Rockaway peninsula the
same commitment as Phil has.
I sincerely hope that the Democratic and Republican clubs
and groups in and around our
peninsula do not insult the people of our peninsula by anointing a candidate because of their
dedication to a specific party,
you know, someone weve never
even heard of before or stood in

the back of some meeting for ten

minutes before bolting.
Anyone who comes forward
to ask for our vote should make
sure they evaluate their record
of commitment to our peninsula
and have a clear history of fighting for the good of Rockaway.
In other words make sure you
have the glow: someone who has
been with us on the front lines in
our support of our police, someone who stood with us on the
Rocks (groins) to fight for sand,
someone who fought with us
against Williams Transco pipeline, someone who fought with
us against the Liberty Liquid
Natural Gas lines off our shores,
someone who was with us every
step of the way to fight to have
our boardwalk rebuilt, someone who is out here advocating
for better schools for our kids,
someone who fights for cleaner
and safer beaches, someone who
is with us today fighting for protection for our beach and bay,
someone who has been fighting
for better and cleaner roads. . . In
other words, make sure you have
the Glow or dont waste your
time.

Goldfeder Goodbye
Phil Goldfeder announced
hes not running for reelection.
A growing family, tiresome trips
to Albany, and a paltry salary for
the work convinced him it was
time to move on. No local elected official in our memory was
liked and admired as much as
Phil. He seemed to be at every
meeting and event; he and his
staff were extraordinarily responsive to constituent needs. A lot of
the calls he took were really City
issues (broken parking meters,
Build It Back, cops on the beat,
etc.) and he couldve steered
those calls to a City rep or agency
but he didnt play that game. He
did what he could.

And he did the work in the most

pressing time: post-Sandy. His
own house was flooded yet he got
to work as if it hadnt been. That
might be the most underrated
part of the job hes done. He had
a pretty good excuse to mail it in
(and too many elected officials
do) yet he did the opposite. He
worked and worked when Rockaway needed it most. He went
above and beyond.
He never showed an ounce of
partisanship so he was admired
by people of all parties. Its highly likely that he would have run
unopposed in November. Phil
leaves office as one of those rare
people who are more popular on

The Rockaway Times

the way out than on the way in.

Unfortunately, he leaves with
unfinished business and whomever takes over has to get up to
speed immediately on one issue in particular. In March, 2015
Goldfeder announced that he was
introducing legislation that would
create the New York Flood Insurance Association. Such an entity
would allow New Yorkers to have
an option other than National
Flood Insurance Program which
is up for Congressional approval
in 2017 and remains a potentially
devastating choice for Rockaway
home and business owners.
In a call to The Rockaway Times
this week, Goldfeder said hed
help his successor navigate
through the Albany legislative
ins and outs. He reminded us
that hell remain a Rockaway
resident and he has a personal stake in the same issues as
many of us.
There will be time, though not
much, to learn about the candidates who seek to fill his job
in January. Today, however, is
just a time to say, job well done,
Phil. See you around the neighborhood.

Build It Back Woes

Dear Editor,
Whats the story with Build-ItBack? They board up a house,
turn off all utilities, raise it twelve
feet in the air---and walk away?
In my immediate area the are
three such homes. One neighbor after moving all possessions
and residents away and signing
up properly, is still, after three
months, awaiting any action at
all. BIB claims violations, which
in no way were enumerated before she signed up for this.
A big corner house is like that
for one month, pending, according to BIB, permits. If the city is

didnt have enough on their
plate. Running Umas on Rockaways Restaurant Row plus
their summer stand at the concessions on Beach 97th wasnt
challenging enough. Now, the
couple is opening up yet another establishment, this time
in a part of Puerto Rico that is
famous for its good waves.
Located in the increasingly
popular area of Isabela, Puerto
Rico, the Karls will be debuting
Umas Playa Jobos sometime in
late June, but with a Caribbean
flair. The restaurant is conveniently located right on Jobos
beach, which is arguably one of
the best surf beaches according to Conrad. Besides offering
food, they will have a fully licensed and stocked bar.
Surfers from the US, particu-

larly Long Beach, New Jersey

and Rockaway have descended on this northwest corner
of Puerto Rico. Throw in additional surfers and vacationers
from the Carolinas and Florida
during the November to May
months and you have an expanding resort area.
What used to be a closed
surfer community a few years
ago has now become the target for destination weddings,
an increasingly popular industry. The Karls are working with
BQN Weddings, a company
providing services for these
destination weddings. With
Ashley Wright of the aforementioned company, they will
soon be launching BQN Life, a
full-service tourist site. Umas
Playa Jobos involvement will
include housing a surf-andwind cam on their deck overlooking the beach, which can

be viewed from the website

once it is operational.
In addition to its ideal beach
location, Playa Jobos will feature a palm garden, designed
by resident landscape architect
Walter Meyer and his firm, Local Office Landscape Architecture. This Harvard graduate is
sought for his outstanding work

in landscape and urban design,

such as the Rockaway East Resiliency Preserve and the Sea

In Touch With Tech

LITERALLY RECHARGING ON THE BEACH
By Pat Morgan

Picture this scenario.

You are enjoying a sunny
day on the beach, feet neatly tucked into the sand. You
are digging the music being
pumped to your ear buds by
your smart phone, and in
between fielding a few calls.
Then you suddenly get the
disturbing notification that
you are about to run out of
battery. There is no electricity on the beach and charging
stations are rarer than a steak
at Peter Lugers. You dont
want to cut your day short.
Your primary means of communication and relaxation
has been cut off. What do you
do?
Well, if you are a Neo-Luddite, you wouldnt have this
problem in the first place.
But to the two-thirds of the
population owning a smart
device, this can be a major

issue. Owning a BioLite SolarPanel 5+, would solve this

problem.
You can Go Green by converting the suns rays into the
SolarPanel 5+s onboard battery, which is enough to fully
charge an iPhone (or provide
a 25% boost to an iPad). Putting out at up to 5-Watts an
hour, its ultra-slim panel can
charge your devices rain or
shine. A special feature includes the Auto Reconnect
which reengages charging
once the clouds part and the
sun peaks through, so you
wont waste a moment of
sunlight. It will achieve its

maximum battery storage in

two hours of full sun.
Other neat features of this
compact unit are: The Battery and Charge Strength Indicator where you can monitor the strength of the sun to
measure your panel capacity, the Battery Status Button
that lets you determine how
much juice you have stored
in the battery and the Sundial
on the top right of the device
that provides easy alignment
so you can capture the direct
rays to achieve a maximum
charge.
On the back, the USB
Charge Out connection allows a 5-Watt output to
charge phones, cameras, tablets, and other gear. The Micro USB Charge Port allows
you to get a head start on
your power storage by filling
up the battery at home. Both
ports have rubber dust covers, similar to your typical

smart device cases.

The rugged and weather resistant SolarPanel 5+ also features a 360-degree kickstand
to help simplify the positioning of your solar panel on uneven terrain like the beach.
The stand can click into a
variety of positions or can
be used to hang the unit on
something, like a beach tent.
If you are a hiker, you can clip
the solar panel to your backpack with the latch points at
the bottom to charge up while
exploring. The unit weighs
13.76 ounces and measures
10.2 x 8.2 x 0.9 which makes
slightly larger than an iPad.
The SolarPanel 5+ is available for $79.95 (plus tax and
shipping).
What if you are riding your
bike back from one of our local establishments after dark?
Do you really want to use

natural beauty. The Guajataca Forest is a pristine natural
reserve with flora and fauna
unique to the island. The forest
also has 25 miles of trails. Tropical Trail Rides offers beachfront
horseback rides and ATV tours.
The whole area is safe and
beautiful Conrad Karl said.
There is surfing, rain forests,
waterfalls and hiking. You can
see sea turtles, manatees and
sting rays. Its like swimming
around an aquarium.
The resort on which Umas
Playa Jobos sits will have three
vacation rentals and a surf shop.
The complexs owner is a retired
Ocean Safety Patrol Officer, who
spent 30 years in Hawaii and
decided to return back home. It
will have a full-service surf shop
that will provide lessons, retail
shopping and rentals.
Opening any new business
is never easy. The biggest challenge of starting up a new enterprise in Puerto Rico for Karl is
the distance, because it means

time spent away from the family. Another challenge is construction material. The closest
Home Depot is 23 miles away.
However, Karl claims that the
contractors he has been using
are excellent.
Unlike the rest of Puerto Rico,
this particular region reportedly benefits from a steady tourist
economy based on expanding
businesses such as restaurants,
retail shopping and real estate,
mostly being purchased by
Americans.
In the past, Jobos was a local
beach where the resident surf-

ers were aggressive to outside

surfers. That has completely
changed now. They are more
accommodating to tourism.
They are building kiosks, lifeguard and police stations and
working on building tourism,
Karl said.
So whats on the menu? It will
be the classic Eurasian cuisine
that we are accustomed to in
Rockaway but with a tropical
twist. For example, shredded
mango will be added to the
popular Umas Salad. Locally sourced ingredients will be
used in the dishes served there.

Page 23
Umas Playa Jobos will also take
advantage of the abundance
of local seafood such as Yellow
Fin Tuna, Mahi-mahi and spiny
lobsters.
So how do you get there? JetBlue has direct flights from JFK
to Aguadilla Airport (BQN),
whose airport code is short for
Borinquen or this area of
Puerto Rico. National Airlines
will have flights out of Long Islands Islip Airport later this
summer. Isabela is eight minutes away from BQN by car.
So whats on the horizon?
Karl envisions having outrigger
tours as well as opening a sunset deck. He also hopes to promote more ecotourism. There
is even talk of a zipline going
through the rainforest.
We wish the Karls the best of
luck in their new endeavor or as
they say in Spanish Buena suerte.
For more information about
Umas Playa Jobos or the Isabela
area in general, you can contact
Conrad Karl by email cpkarljr@
mac.com The restaurant can be
found on Facebook by searching
for Umas Playa Jobos.

Phil Goldfeder - A Political

Horse of a Different Color

One of my favorite writers,

Peggy Noonan, once wrote,
Dont fall in love with politicians. They are all disappointments, They cant help
it. They just are. I have always taken Peggys advice
to heart, especially when it
comes to the world of Albany
politics where our state legislature is apparently filled
with scores of honest poli-

ticians as you can say, once

they are bought, they tend to
stay bought. Of course even
Ms. Noonan would allow that
there are exceptions to her
rule and, every now and then,
an innocent man manages to
get elected and is sent to the
legislature. Those of us who
reside within the State Assemblys 23rd District have
been blessed to be on the
receiving end of such a rare
political happenstance in the
person of our own local state
assemblyman, Phil Goldfeder
when he assumed stewardship of our district from the
hands of Audrey Pheffer back
in 2011.
One of the first things I noticed about Phil indicating
that he was possibly a political horse of a different color
was the fact that his campaign
was conducted without the
usual political ad hominem
attacks against his opponent,

Proudly serving our community for over 25 years.

Jane Deacy, a retired NYC Police Officer and Republican

District Leader, and instead
focused solely on the constituent concerns of the 23rd district - elimination of the Cross
Bay Bridge toll, job creation,
tidal street flooding, local
crime, etc.
During October of 2012,
one year after winning his
seat in the 23rd District, Hurricane Sandys storm surge
laid waste to our community
here in Broad Channel, and
this young, energetic family
man came into his own as his
leadership abilities proved a
boon for his constituents during what would be a long and
difficult recovery process. Although his own familys home
in Rockaway was damaged,
Phil was an almost everyday
presence in our town and his
capacity to infuse his own
sense of optimism into the
residents of Broad Channel
served to restore our belief
that there was really a light
at the end of that dark tunnel
of destruction. On November
17, 2012, President Obama,
Governor Cuomo and Mayor
Bloomberg flew over our town
in a helicopter en route to
somewhere other than Broad
Channel. For the most part,
they were never seen again.
The following day I was heading up to the American Legion for a hot meal and some
cleaning supplies and when
I arrived at the Legion there
was Phil Goldfeder doing
what he does best, listening
to his constituents.
Over the ensuing years Phil
has maintained his almost
manic enthusiasm for service
to our community as he involved himself in a myriad of
issues of concern to his constituency and I am not talking
about the global and national issues which inundate our
media but over which none of
us has any control. I am referring to those quality of life
issues that garner little or no
press attention but which impact each and every one of us

on a daily basis where political intervention can serve to

better our lives in the community. Thankfully, Phil has
also demonstrated an intuitive ability to staff his offices
with individuals (Bella Pori,
Amanda Kernozek, Pnina
Gluck, Eugene Shvartsman,
and Jon Greenfield) all of
whom share both his enthusiasm and concern for the constituents of the 23rd District.
You call or email his office
with a question or concern,
either large or small, and you
can be assured of a prompt,
courteous reply and follow up
actions.
No summer soldier of partisan politics, Phil has proved
himself to be that rare species
of politician who is more concerned with the well being of
the present and future generations of the families in his
District rather than that of his
own re-election. Phils appeal
stems from the fact that we
all recognize him for what he
is, which is to say hes one of
us, sharing the same dreams,
hopes and aspirations we
all have for our families and
community.
Obviously I have no sense of
what road in life our assemblyman may undertake when
he departs office in six months
but I would like to leave Phil
and his family with these
heartfelt words of thanks for
all he has accomplished on
behalf of all us here in Broad
Channel - May the road rise
up to meet you, may the wind
ever be at your back. May the
sun shine warm upon your
face and the rain fall softly on
your fields....
Good luck and God bless!

community funded and handbuilt park. A Mini Bowl is the latest
feature in this park on the beach
with mega thanks to Jimmy Dowd
for all his efforts with other organizations.
While there will be a plethora of
fantastic tents showcasing all the
local talented peoples goods on
the boardwalk, the real highlight is
the music festival Jimmy & Walker
put on the stage on the boardwalk.

JUNE
By Helen Kilgallen

June is one my favorite

months. There are so many
celebrations between graduations, communions, birthdays,
dinner dances, concerts, etc.
Summer is in full swing with the
music on the boardwalk and
lifeguards on the beach. On
June 25, Yoga on the Beach
will start on Beach 108th Street.
What an amazing experience!
All the bungalow people and
many others will stroll down
at 7:55 and they are so grateful
to be back in Rockaway for the

summer. It is our heaven on

earth. We are so blessed to live
here and they are so blessed to
share in a piece of the pie during the summer.
June is also the time when we
go up in the mountains for our
annual yoga retreat. Going on
a retreat resets the body, mind
and spirit. To be immersed in
yoga, meditation, spa treatments and healthy eating
from Thursday to Sunday with
like-minded individuals is a
dream vacation. For many it is

ROCKAWAY GETS CANNES SPOTLIGHT
he meets a girl (played by Chloe
Levine). Although its never
mentioned by name, OSheas
main character lives in Rockaway. Those who see the movie
will recognize several familiar
sites as the film was shot locally. Some of it was shot in
Brooklyn and Manhattan, but
we spent about two or three
weeks shooting in Rockaway

last August, OShea said. Some

filming locations include a deli
on Beach 98th Street, areas of
Edgemere, the bay by McDonalds, St. Camillus, where OShea
had attended grammar school
and even his parents building
at 7400 Shore Front Parkway.
Im very happy to make my
first film in Rockaway. Its fun to
film in your hometown because
I knew all the locations, so I
knew where I wanted to shoot
and knew how to find contacts
to shoot at these locations for
cheap, which helped since we
were low budget, OShea said.
The Transfiguration was almost set in New Orleans. OShea
says he first came up with the
idea following Hurricane Katrina and he had a post-Katrina New Orleans in mind for a
shooting location as he wrote
the screenplay. The idea of
shooting in Rockaway didnt ac-

Rockaway made it to the

Cannes Film Festival. Michael
OSheas indie horror film The
Transfiguration was selected as a feature in the Un Certain Regard category in one of
the biggest film festivals in the
world last month.
Director OShea, a Rockaway native who now resides in
Brooklyn, just returned home
from a whirlwind experience
in France with the Cannes Film
Festival. The filmmaker was able
to show his first movie on more
than just the big screen. Back in
April, OShea received an email
saying his film had been selected for the festival. I had submitted my film and didnt hear
anything for two months and
then I got this random email
saying I got in. I thought I was
being catfished. I didnt believe
it until they held a press conference where they announced

Michael OSheas vampire saga

as one of the chosen films. I
thought oh my God, this is real,
and apparently I made a vampire saga, OShea said.
OShea, not quite fond of the
vampire saga label says The
Transfiguration is a mix of horror and an indie drama about
a boy (played by Eric Ruffin)
whos really into vampires and

tually happen until after Sandy.
Rockaway made for a visually
good location for a horror film
after Sandy. I was planning to
shoot the summer after Sandy
when Rockaway hadnt been
rebuilt yet, but I couldnt get financing that year. By the time I
shot last August, Rockaway had
mostly been rebuilt but once
you see the film, youll see the
reasons why I thought shooting
after Sandy wouldve been interesting, but it still worked and
theres something nice about
setting your first film in the
place you grew up, OShea said.
OSheas film screened three
times during the Cannes Film
Festival on May 14 and 15 under
the Un Certain Regard category,
which OShea calls the weird
section of the festival. I got
selected for the weird section
in the artsy film festival, which
must mean Im really weird, he
joked. Its a lot of world cinema with a lot of first-time filmmakers and many low budget
films. There were only maybe
three American films, so it was

THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 2016

insane that I got picked, OShea
said. Un Certain Regard films
typically dont feature celebrities,
but OShea got to walk along the
same red carpet as famous actors
and directors, whose films were
being featured in other categories. It was this amazing, dreamlike thing. Youre in a tuxedo and
people are pointing cameras,
not really at me because Im not
famous, but pointing cameras
around you at famous people.
Im 40-something and Ive never
been to a film festival in my life,
so it was a strange experience to
be thrust into and being there as
a director was pretty crazy, he
said.
OShea says he never expected his film to get such a big
spotlight. When I was making
the movie, I was thinking that it
would just be seen on a home
video and I was fine with that,
but then I got to see it screened
in this thousand-seat theater
on a giant screen with amazing sound, and I thought yeah,
now I only want it to be seen
like this! The whole thing was
a dream come true, he said.
OSheas film was also positive-

ly received. I was terrified that

I would get booed, but I got a
standing ovation. I was very
happy.
The Cannes screening has
opened up a can of opportunity for The Transfiguration.
If it wasnt for Cannes, no one
would ever see the film. Now
we have a chance. Other festivals are looking at us and it got
some distribution globally. We
sold a few territories and were
working on getting American
distribution, he said. OShea
hopes the film will reach the US
by 2017. Its not going to have
some giant opening, but you
will see it in America at some
point. Everything I couldve
dreamed of for this film is going
to happen and its all thanks to
Cannes. Updates about the
film and its next steps can be
found by following The Transfiguration on Facebook or
checking out www.thetransfigurationfilm.com.
While OShea may work a
day job fixing computers and
The Transfiguration may be
his first big film, he has had a
longtime interest in filmmak-

Page 33
ing. At the age of 16, he made
a short film with his friends in
Rockaway to use to get into film
school at SUNY Purchase. In
the 90s, I went to college for
film but I later decided that I
didnt want to work in film because I didnt enjoy the work
part of it. I decided Id rather
write my own stuff for free and
get my own films made and not
actually work in the film industry because creatively, I wanted to be on a different path,
he said. OShea worked odd
jobs but has always continued
to write and he started to take
film more seriously after meeting his producer girlfriend, Susan 10 years ago. I told myself
that I was going to give myself
10 more years to get a film financed and if by 10 years I
didnt get anything, I would give
up. Were at seven years since I
made that promise and Im not
giving up, he said. While waiting on the next steps for his film,
OShea is also working with his
manager to get another script financed for a cross-country film,
which he says will have opening
scenes filmed in Rockaway.

life changing, for many it is a
discovery of awareness of the
inner workings. It can be a time
to begin to formulate a plan to
live a healthy, happy life.
Yoga retreats are really
unique because you are eating,
meditating, doing yoga, relaxing and sharing common space
with one another. Some people
know each other, some not, but
all begin to bond like a family.
There is a lot of time to be with
one another without the stress
of work, family or any other
obligation. You connect to one
another and to yourself in a
very deep way.
There is something about
the mountains where silence
is never really quiet. You are
truly engrossed in nature and
yourself. It is so beautiful and
peaceful. Being deeply submersed in the woods with no
cell phone, internet, or TV allows for a meaningful retreat.
There are no distractions, you
are open and vulnerable yet
safe and secure. Human nature
is compassionate, kind and

T+|

loving. There is healing energy

and deep awareness the entire
weekend.
I visited Costa Rica on a family vacation a few years back and
naturally I took a yoga class at
the local studio. It was amazing
being in a tree house practicing
yoga out in the environment. I
saw a group of yogis on retreat
and smiled knowing how relaxed and good they must feel.
Honestly, I was jealous because
their time would be spent doing lots of yoga, eating healthy,
surfing, receiving body massages and relaxing. Whats not
to like?!
So if you have ever contemplated going on a retreat,
just do it. Dont hesitate. It
is worth every penny and
your life could change for
the better. In my experience,
you will find peace and serenity. Perhaps you will ask
yourself Where would you
have me go? What would you
have me do? What would you
have me say and to whom?
~~Marianne
Williamson.
Totally life-transforming experience.

Or should I say use old

shutters to get you thinking
There are so many things
you can do with old shutters, this week I am going to
tell you how to make a small
cabinet. This is great to use
in bathrooms, on the porch
or just about anywhere.
You will need to start with
four shutters that are the
same size, some wood (size
depends on the shutters you
use), some corner brackets, two hinges, paint, some
screws and a handle or knob.
1- Cut two pieces of wood,
length will be 1-1/2 inches
longer than the width of your
shutter, cut the width one
inch wider than your shutter.

Shutters to Think

2- Using your brackets

and small screws, secure
the two side shutters to the
back shutter. The side shutters should be flush while
the edge of the back shutter,
tops and bottoms should all
be even.
3- Secure the top and bottom pieces of wood with the
long side facing the opening.
Space the sides evenly and
leave about inch overhang
on the back.

you may only need one

shelf ).
6- Secure four corner
brackets to each shelf (two
on each side).
7- With the brackets facing
down, place your shelf into
the cabinet and secure it to
the shutters on both sides.
8- Paint your cabinet to the
color of your choosing.

4- Secure the 4th shutter

to the front using two hinges
and install handle/knob.

9- You all know this one is

Jamaica Bay Softball League

Week 1 Recap
By The Commissioner

So much for the weather

breaking at the perfect time.
Mother Nature spoiled our
opening day but we were still
lucky enough to get a few games
in. All the 11:30 a.m. games
were postponed due to the rain
and conditions of the field. It is
up to the captains of each team
to discuss when they are willing
to make the games up. Teams
may have to play doubleheaders. We hope they do so as soon
as possible in case it rains again.
Thanks for trying to get this
done.
On Field 1 we had the defending champs Mudsharks
taking on the Chuggernauts.
They were only able to get one
game in after Game 1 was such
a high scoring game. The Sharks
and Chuggs would trade runs
each inning until late in the
game when the Chuggernauts
made one too many errors in
the field. All the errors led to the
Sharks taking the lead by 6 and
not making it possible for the
Chuggs to come back. Not sure
if they were keeping scores by
runs or touchdowns but Mudsharks won 21-15.

Game 2 was called in the second inning due to rain and will
be made up at another time.
Big day at the plate for youngster Mikey Connelly as he had 6
RBIs for the Chuggernauts. Captain Steve Trudden of the Mudsharks said he was looking forward to the case of beer Justin
Meatball Guttieri has to bring
next week for striking out in his
first at bat of the season.
In last weeks article we predicted that the Orioles would
sweep. Being that they were
under new management, people really thought it was the
year of the Oriole. But we were
all wrong. Misfits bats came
out hot and didnt stop all day.
Huge hits by Steve Amster and
Tomas Krohn was too much
for the Os as the Misfits went
on to win 15-0 and 15-6. Even
with losing for the first time on
Opening Day in the last four
years there were a few streaks
that continued for the Orioles.
Ben Hawks streak of putouts
at catcher continued to 10
straight games. Another streak
that continued was Big Selfie
popping out to the infield for
16 straight games. Not sure if it
was a fishermens radio on the

beach but people thought they

heard ESPN music on a catch
in the outfield by Johnny Blake.
Special thanks to both teams for
sucking it up and getting both
games in.
Hopefully Mother Nature will
be on our side next week. Heres
a look at what we have for Week
2.
Mudsharks vs No-Shows, 9:30
Field 1
No-Shows were spotted at
the field this week sporting new
jerseys and had a few new faces with them, but got spoiled by
the rain. Mudsharks are dealing
with a few injuries but doesnt
matter who they put out there,
they always find a way to win.
PREDICTION: Split
Orioles vs Knights of Columbus 2672, 9:30 Field 2
The Os may need to find
someone else to lead this team
before they find themselves in a
hole early on. KOC cant wait to
take the field after being rained out.
Mike McCarthy was upset that the
team wasted 3 bottoms of Bengay. Look for them to put that to
good use this week. PREDICTION:
Knights of Columbus Sweep
Old Head vs Misfits, 11:30
Field 1

Chris Long and company are all over Facebook saying how this is their year. For
that to happen they need to get
through the 1st Place Misfits.
This should be two good games.
PREDICTION: Split
Chuggernauts vs Moneyballs, 11:30 Field 2
Errors cost Chuggernauts
their opener on the season.
Look for this series to be a
high scoring affair with a lot
of runs and a lot more errors.
PREDICTION: Chuggernauts
Sweep
Morning Wood on the Bye.
Standings after Week 1.

Golf Advice
By Joel Garyn

Hopefully I was able to help

you with the two previous
tips. Now we move on to the
swinging of the club and the
key part to practice.
The takeaway actually starts
with NO wrist action at all. It
should be a one-piece move
that is best performed by letting the Right Shoulder blade
begin moving back. This starts
a pulling of the right arm and
hand as the club is delivered
in a one-piece move like
handing off a football.
Once the hands move beyond the right thigh, the
right wrist will start bending
back which creates the corresponding flat left wrist that

is critical in the impact area.

As the backswing continues
to progress beyond the right
thigh area and the wrist bends
back, the right elbow actually does not travel very far in
a good backswing. It simply
folds and points toward the
ground as the right palm faces the sky in a waiters tray
position at the top. Some key
points must be noted in this
top position. The weight of
the shaft should be resting on
the TRIGGER FINGER, not the
thumb. Also the right palm
will face away from the player to the right. If the club rests
on the thumb and palm faces
the player, then the club face
will be too open and casting is
inevitable on the downswing.

As the downswing starts, the

right arm and shoulder simply drop straight down as
the feet press firmly into the
ground and the knees make
a slight lateral shift. There is
no body turn at this stage-the
right arm cannot drop straight
down if the chest starts turning. The straight down drop
is what stores the lag angle
at right elbow and right wrist
as the club drops into the slot
half way down. (The following is important to work on.
The secret at this stage of the
swing is to feel the pressure
against the right hand trigger
finger as the right palm faces
down at waist-high.) From
the top of the backswing it
feels like hitting your right

thigh with the heel of your

right hand while your right
wrist stays bent all the way
back. As you bring the club
down to the hitting area the
butt end of the club should
point at the golf ball, toe
of the club points upward
and right palm is facing the
ground. {left handlers reverse
all of the above}
Next week we will talk
about Impact and Release in
the Golf Swing. Again, if you
dont put any real effort you
cant expect to realize any
measurable gains.
Have a great week.

So maybe youve seen the

name on a few Rockaway
Times articles? Perhaps you
have wondered, is Pat the
ambiguous character from
Saturday Night Live? Is Pat
male or female or even a nom
de plume. Maybe you wondered who the hell this is and
how I got here?
My name is Patrick Morgan,
the oldest of five children,
born and raised in Brooklyn
NY. Depending on the friend
or relative, I can be called either Pat, Patrick, Paddy, Patsy
or Padraig. Like a well-trained
dog, I respond to all of them.
My dad, known as Jack, emigrated to the US from Belfast,
Northern Ireland and worked
for Con Ed for 41 years. My
mom, Kathleen, was born
in Brooklyn to parents from
Limerick City, Ireland. I had
attended both public (PS 119
& 207) and Catholic grammar
schools (St. Thomas Aquinas
Flatlands) as well as Nazareth High School and Brooklyn
College, where I was a foreign
language major.
My wife Mary and I have
been married almost 38 years
and we have a grown daughter and son, who also reside in
Rockaway with their families.
We originally moved to Belle

Harbor in 2002, and are now

the proud grandparents of four
granddaughters. I had spent
34 interesting years as an Account Executive in corporate
sales at AT&T before retiring in
March 2015.
So how did I get involved
with this fine publication? Retirement was getting a little
boring. I responded to an ad
this past March in the Rockaway Times which was looking
for a part-time reporter. I met
with Kevin and he liked the
ideas that I brought to the table. (Well, at least thats what
he told me). I am able to write
about things that interest me,
that hopefully will interest
you, the good people of this
community. Could this be the
beginning of a second career
for me? Well, if Boyle stops
burying my articles in the back
of the paper, maybe it could!
Since this is a part-time
job, what else do I do? I am
an active board member of a
non-profit organization called
the Dorothy Bennett Mercy
Center located in the Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy section of
Brooklyn. For a number of
years, I volunteered my time
after work to teach English as
a Second Language to Spanish-speaking immigrants. My
family and I are parishioners
in St. Francis de Sales church.
Besides writing for the Rockaway Times and participating
in charity work, I enjoy being
a part-time musician, playing
keyboards in the local band
Solshyne. Yeah, those guys
with all of the tie-dye. Staying
in touch with my roots, I had
also played in an Irish-American band called the Moran Brothers for a number of
years. My other interests are
in sports, food/cooking, history and technology, which you
probably see reflected in my
columns. Im always in search
of a satirical, biting comedy as
well as a good joke.
I hope you enjoy my work.
Thanks for supporting the
Rockaway Times!

through #8) One could opine
that I am opening the proceedings with what should be a Rosalita-type closer by tackling
this topic right out of the gate.
In this instance, I am going to
play what sounds the best and
hope to find even better songs
later on, ideally with the polite
assistance of some sign-wielding crowd members.
Perhaps no greater journalistic challenge exists than adequately forming a Top Ten
list in any discipline. Bellicose
personal convictions driven by

the almighty vague notion of

ones own experience often
cloud rhetoric, subsequently
blinding debate participants
from the most rational agent of
truth: statistics.
For the purpose of this particular Top Ten we must consider infinite variables merely
to arrive at a destination that
still likens to a daunting, hungover bike ride to the lifeguard
shack at 7 a.m. on a Saturday
morning. At the forefront of that
- who do we put into consideration? Do summer residents
count? Lets just settle on the
following: if the individual answers the question Where are
you from? with a location on
the Peninsula (St. Rose of Lima
being the easternmost authorized border in this arena - sorry
Mel Utley and John Warren) and
played their youth basketball in
these parts, they are eligible.
As a follow up to that, lets
keep in mind this is not a salute

is inherently flawed because
of the above vagaries that have
been referenced and the fact
that so few presently among
us can claim to have seen all
eligible candidates play live.
There is also the ubiquitous
generational fracas regarding
an alleged increase in level of
play as the game has been inundated with freakish strength
and athleticism. At this point
the aspersions headed in my
direction seem unavoidable,
so without further ado, behold
the first installment of the
Top Ten Basketball Players in
Peninsula History.
#10 Kevin Fitzgerald, 64
Point Guard, Boston University (St. Francis Prep)
Widely known for his inviolable loyalty to teammates and
Vector Calculus-level floor IQ,
Fitz commences the countdown festivities for more than
just his commitment to Blue
Party basketball. His most noble separator: he is the only
Peninsula native to start in an
NCAA Division 1 Tournament
Game post-1991 (apologies to
our ombudsmen). Plus, how
many student-athletes stay loyal to the same mascot for 8 consecutive seasons? His dichotomous player profile as a burglar
with altruistic tendencies landed him on the elder Terriers
all-time list in steals and assists
respectively.
#9 John Wassenbergh 64
Power Forward, St. Josephs
Maine (South Portland/McClancy)
If I asked the average Rockaway-based Generation Yer
what NBA team in New York
history they had a predilection
for, it would have to be the mid90s Knicks. While I never got
the chance to see Wassenbergh
in his prime, something tells

me he watched a lot of Charles

Oakley and Anthony Mason
film. Though undersized, he
was able to carve out a 9 season professional career both
overseas (Korea, UK) and stateside (USBL) using a shifty post
game and bear-like strength to
earn optimal positioning for his
touches. J.W. followed a similar
career trajectory to fellow Rockaway native Tim Shea in that
they both terrorized opposition
at small colleges and went on to
enjoy long careers over the pond
afterwards. Wassenbergh gets
the nod here for three reasons:
(1) He won a Summer Classics
Open Division Title at Age 40
in 2014, (2) He is a lefty, and (3)
Tim Shea did not respond to my
tweet this week requesting his
audience for the purpose of this
article.
#8 Janelle McManus, 56
Point Guard, Fairfield/Boston
College (Bishop Kearney)
The diminutive back-court
wizards label as The CHSAA
Womens Career Scoring Champion makes her appearance in
the Top 10 a no-brainer. Playing
in the Clinton-era where individualized hero-ball play of
NBA megastars - think Iverson/Bryant - was far more
celebrated, McManus never
let a penchant for scoring inhibit her ability to enrich the
overall team concept. If you
were lucky enough to be in
the old gym on Flatbush at St.
Thomas Aquinas MLK weekend of the year 2000 for McManus 7 point-in 5.8-second
genocide of Bishop Loughlins defense, this dissertation can end right here. If
these facts alone do not have
you poring through Amazon in search of a McManus
throwback Fairfield Stags
#12, consider this: In 8 career encounters with Sue Bird
(spanning both high school
and college), McManus carried a stout 18 point-per-game
average while wearing the other
teams colors.
See ya next week for more.

Football Tournament for Justin Zemser

By Katie McFadden

Hundreds came out to remember an incredible young

man at the first Z-Man Memorial Football Tournament on
Saturday, June 4. The event
exemplified much of what Justin Zemser loved as his peers
showed their love for the man
who had made such a strong
impact on them.
Zemser may have died in the
Amtrak derailment last year,
but his lively spirit was felt

on the field as teams of fellow

classmates, football players
and alumni faced each other
in a fun day of flag football.
Zemser had played football
when he attended Channel
View School for Research, as
well as with the U.S. Naval
Academy when he was a midshipman. Eight teams faced
off during Saturdays event.
Team Alpha, led by captain
C.J. Callagher won the overall tournament, beating out
a team called Z, which was

led by one of Zemsers best

friends, Breland Archbold, according to Rob Engelbert, one
of the event organizers who
was Zemsers history teacher when he attended Channel View. Overall I think it
was a success, especially being it was the first time I ever
planned something like this. I
feel we did a great job of honoring Justin and his memory,
Engelbert said. He wouldve
been proud.
The event was held as a
fundraiser for the Justin Zemser Scholarship Fund, which
is expected to be given to a
CVSR senior, that most embodies the spirit and ideals of Zemser, at graduation. The event, which cost
just $4 the day of, included
a DJ and a PTA concession
stand, plus raffles, a 50/50
and event t-shirts that were
sold to raise money for the
scholarship fund. According to Community Associate
Lauren OConnor, the event

was a big success, with more

than 300 tickets sold at the
gate alone, plus another 50
sold in advance at the school.
Plus there were plenty of donations to the cause. Some
people just walked up and
handed over $50, OConnor
said. Also a part of the event
was a rock painting station,
set up by Zemsers father. It
is customary in Jewish tradition to leave behind rocks
for those who passed. Guests
were welcome to decorate a
rock in tribute to Zemser and
place it in front of a large memorial rock at the beginning
of the field where Justin had
played football.

Rockaway Little League Recap

ROYALS EDGE MARINERS FOR MJB FLAG; BONNIES CLINCH MJG

The older divisions of Rockaway Little League (Major Boys
and Major Girls) provided the
most exciting pennant races of
2016. On Saturday, the Graybeards Bonnies (10-2) squeaked
past the Stop & Shop Pandas to
claim the Major Girls pennant
while the Contes Carpet Royals needed two tight victories to
catch the DriveSafe Auto Center
Mariners in an 8-4 tie for first
place. The Royals earned the top
spot and a first-round bye in the
playoffs by virtue of a tiebreaker.
The Mariners, who surged
into first place midway through
the season, were the leaders in

the clubhouse after a 21-12 win

to finish the season. The Royals kept their hopes alive with
a tight 4-3 triumph over the
Ridgewood Saving As on Sunday. Mondays contest against
the Metalman Sales Orioles
would determine the top four
spots in the division. The Orioles hung tough, rallying within 8-7 in the fifth inning but the
Royals swiped two more runs
on close plays at the plate to
forge the 10-7 final.
In the Major Girls season
finale, the Graybeards Bonnies defeated the Stop & Shop
Pandas 6-5 in an incredible
game. Both teams should be
commended for their efforts
throughout the year. Each girl
has shown growth and maturity over the course of the 12game season. As a testament to
the strong pitching and fielding
performances during this game,
8 of the 12 team at bats resulted in zero runs scored. Kudos
to both teams pitchers: Noelle

Carey, Jamie Kinneary and Kelly Erhardt for the Pandas; Alex
Cook, Bridget Donnolly and Tori
Mullen for the Bonnies. Worth
noting is the exceptional job
both teams catchers did. Kelly
and Diane Erhardt for the Pandas held the Bonnies runners in
check while the Bonnies catchers Kiera Price, Alex Cook and
Bridget Donnolly were equally
effective. Todays game ball went
to Kelsie Price who went 2-for-2
with a walk and stole four bases.
Kelsie, a rookie of the year nominee, drove in two runs on an 0-2
count to put the Bonnies ahead
in the top of the 6th.
The Bonnies entered the
weekend tied with the Walsh
Properties Flippers but the
hard-charging St. Johns Hospital Tigers opened a door for
the eventual pennant winners
by upsetting the Flippers 186. The Tigers bats exploded
with big hits by Chloe Murphy,
Noelle Cook and Allie DOrazio.
The defense stepped up big
with great plays by infielders
Alex Conaboy and Abbey Turbridy. Lauren DOrazio caught
a great game gunning out players at second and third. Alisa
Mastrandrea and Noelle Cook
continue their outstanding
performance from the mound.
Samantha Rodino, Maura Edwards and Hanna Mills contributed by scoring a combined five
runs. It was a great team effort!
Another team that has been
on the move of late is the Mahoney Real Estate As in Minor

Boys. Their season is what Little League baseball is all about.

Even though they lost their first
six games, the As never quit.
Now, after an exciting run of
five wins in six games, they
are a team to be feared in the
playoffs. Last Thursday, the As
showed some amazing offense
and defense to beat the Ozane
Pest Management Orioles 1512. The boys were on fire at bat
with Michael Nestor getting two
triples (his first ever), John Kelly getting a double, Ben Gresel,
Matt Steiner, Matt Schneider,
and Hunter Gilhuley all getting
on base. An awesome hit by
Joe Butler drove in two runs,
but he was tagged out at the
home plate. Great pitching by
Gene Sebastiano, Matt Steiner, and John Kelly helped seal
the win. On Saturday, the As
maintained their momentum
as they outplayed the Walsh
Management Rockies 15-6.
John Kelly and Gene Sebastiano gave up a combined six

runs while Ben Gressel closed

out the game with three strikeouts, sealing his second save
of the season. Ben Gressel was
also responsible for a triple
play during the game while Joe
Butler hit a home run (1st of
the season) while John Kelly
hit for the cycle with the home
run being his third grand slam
of the season. Andrew Vaccaro,
Gene Sebastiano, Ben Gressel,
and Michael Nestor all contrib
On Monday, the As capped off
their inspiring run with a 10-9
win over the Rockies.
DIAMOND DUST: All teams
in the competitive divisions
make the playoffs. The postseason begins June 1. Go to www.
