About the Work shop

Power System Protection is very important in an interconnected system for safeguarding the
equipments. Relays play a major role by disconnecting the faulty equipment and by retaining
the rest of the system intact to obtain uninterrupted Power supply. In order to ascertain the
performance of the Relay under various operating conditions of the Power System Testing of
Relays is very much essential.
A numerical protection relay provides multiple functions and typically uses algorithms that do
not work on the same principles as older electromechanical relays. Many protection functions
are integrated in to a single package. Each protection function is intended to detect specific
abnormal condition in the system and initiate tripping. Often, numerical relays are tested using
outdated techniques like static tests developed long ago by injecting fault voltage or fault
current to see if the selected protection function operates at the set point or within limits.
Some protection functions have dynamic characteristics, and if a static test is applied, then the
true performance of the selected function may not be properly tested.
This work shop deals with Dynamic testing of Protective Relays on Real Time Digital Simulator
to validate the protection functions by, simulation of Power system on a Real Time simulator,
creating the Fault or abnormal conditions and testing the Protective relays under such
conditions.
