Park welcomes first Relay for Life crowd

BY NANCY SPENCER
DHI Media Editor
nspencer@delphosherald.com
DELPHOS Relayers packed Stadium Park Friday
night for the locations freshman debut for the Relay for
Life of Delphos.
Nearly 100 survivors and caregivers took the first lap
and then were joined by members from 28 teams for the
2016 event.
The Relay was moved to the park due to summer projects at Jefferson High School, the former location.
We cant thank Delphos City Schools and John
Edinger enough for hosting us for all those years, committee member Sandy Suever said during opening ceremonies. Diesel Schwinnen did our electric for all those years,
too, and hell always be a part of our Relay family.
Many noted how nice it was to be in the park with so
many activities going on. They also complimented how
nice the park looked.
Didnt Delphos Parks and Recreation do a great job
getting the park ready for us? Suever asked the crowd.
It looks wonderful and everyone is having such a good
time.
Ottoville Schools were also recognized for their donations of more than $5,000 to the local event. The school
raised more than $10,000 at its annual Cancer Walk in
May and split the proceeds between the Delphos and
Putnam County Relays.

Edinger eager for more time with family

BY NANCY SPENCER
DHI Media Editor
nspencer@delphosherald.com
DELPHOS It is with
a grateful but heavy heart
that John Edinger leaves
Delphos City Schools.
Edinger has been principal
at Jefferson High School
for 11 years and has loved
every minute. If you talk
to anyone who has worked
alongside Edinger, the first
thing they say about is that
first and foremost, he cares
about the kids.
The things I value most
about John is his generosity,
his genuine love and concern for his students and
his leadership in creating a
positive environment that
is conducive to learning in
our high school, Counselor
Martin Ross said. He has
set a great example for me
and others with his integrity,
work ethic, love of the job
and his character.
For Edinger, getting
along with students is quite
easy.
Kids just want to be
recognized and know that
someone cares. Its amazing to me how many kids
dont have someone who
tells them hello every day,
Edinger said. We have
them at an age that we can
make an impact on them and

as principal, I found myself

even more able to do just
that. Kids respond to positive words and actions.
As a former athletic
director, teacher and coach,
he was hesitant to take a
principalship but when
a colleague told him hed
be able to impact students
lives even more, he took the
plunge.
It has been so rewarding
to watch my 300 or so students grow into young men
and women and learn here
every year, Edinger said.
Edinger has also become
very close with his staff.
Right before I started here
as principal, someone told me
you have to separate yourself
from the staff to be an effective principal, he said. I
have found that is in so not
true. This staff is a great big
family. Everyone Ive hired
has stayed. Relationships
with your staff are so important. Ive gone through deaths,
births and visited people in
the hospital.
Edinger has found keeping up with new rules, regulations and reporting to the
state a task that takes him
away from his daily interactions with students and his
leadership duties.
I just need to step away
from all the state mandates
and red tape and get back
to whats important to me

Edinger

the kids, Edinger said.

The mandates push core
subjects more and more.
School is what it is. Our
public wants us to educate
in every facet of life but our
focus has been pushed to
core subjects. Im also looking forward to having a little
more time with my family.
Beginning in August,
Edinger will spearhead
a new digital academy at
Spencerville Schools, an
endeavor that will be familiar to him.
I started the on-line
school here at Delphos City
Schools because I saw our

students slipping away from

us. he said. They were
being homeschooled or taking their classes online but
didnt have the opportunity to participate in school
activities if they chose to do
so. With the online school
available right here in the
building, they can do their
studies and then go play soccer or baseball or whatever.
It gives them ownership and
a feeling of belonging. It also
enables us to help students
who come into our district
who are credit deficient.

AG DeWine warns Cavs fans to beware ticket scams

information submitted
CLEVELAND Amid high
demand for NBA Finals tickets and
reports of counterfeit ticket sales,
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine
is warning Cleveland Cavaliers fans
to beware of ticket scams for the
remainder of the series between the
Cavs and the Golden State Warriors.
Scammers will do whatever they
can to get you to pay, and then theyre
gone, Attorney General DeWine
said. Once you find out something
is wrong, its too late. The sad truth
for most people is that once they have
lost money in a scam, they will never
see that money again. Thats why
prevention is so important.
In the last several years, Ohioans
have reported losing hundreds of dollars to ticket scams involving popular
sporting events and concerts. In most

cases, the consumers found tickets for

sale on Craigslist and paid the seller,
but received nothing in return. Also,
some scammers create counterfeit
paper tickets to sell to unsuspecting
buyers.
tips to avoid ticket scams
include:
Be skeptical of offers that
are too good to be true. Sellers on
Craigslist or other online marketplaces may offer tickets at face value (or
below) for events that are sold out or
highly in demand, but these offers
may be scams. Some sellers also
may provide phony explanations for
why they need to sell tickets quickly
for a good price. For example, they
may falsely claim to have a family
emergency or to be in the military.
Be careful dealing with individual third-party sellers. To protect
yourself, deal with reputable busi-

nesses instead of third-party individuals who are not associated with an

event. Before providing any payment
or personal information, research
a sellers reputation, especially for
individual sellers. Conduct an online
search using the sellers name, username, email address, and/or telephone number along with words like
reviews, scam, fake tickets, or
counterfeit tickets.
Check the venues ticket policies. Increasingly, a number of venues and events predominantly use
electronic tickets. However, if youre
trying to buy a paper ticket, make
sure its real. Check both sides of
the ticket, and be aware that some
ticket scammers use falsified photos,
logos, or trademarks to create counterfeit tickets that look legitimate
even though they are not.
Consider paying with a credit

Local/State
ODOT releases weekly report
Information submitted
The following is a weekly report concerning construction and
maintenance work on state highways within the Ohio Department
of Transportation District 1. For the latest in statewide construction,
visit www.ohgo.com.
Week of June 13
Allen County
Interstate 75 from the Auglaize County line to Fourth Street,
through Lima and Allen County, will have occasional lane closures throughout the year during the final year of the reconstruction
of the interstate. Current and upcoming impacts to traffic are as
follows:
Traffic on I-75 north and south of the Ohio 65 interchange
area continues to travel in a contraflow pattern where two southbound lanes and one northbound lane of traffic are traveling on the
southbound side of the interstate, and one northbound lane is traveling on the northbound side of the interstate. Traffic will remain in
this pattern until late summer.
Heavy truck traffic will be present throughout the project
for the next several weeks, especially in the area of the Ohio 65
interchange and the Yoder Road area, near the Orthopedic Institute
of Ohio complex.
Yoder Road is open.
Interstate 75 southbound will be restricted to one lane
between the Napoleon Road overhead and Bluelick Road for pavement repairs during the week. Work is being performed by the Allen
County maintenance garage.
Ohio 309 will be impacted by several projects throughout
the construction season as follows:
Ohio 309 (Elida Road) from Robb Avenue to Cole Street,
Lima, is restricted for reconstruction of the curb and gutter, upgrade
of traffic signals and resurfacing of the roadway. The continuous
turn from eastbound Ohio 309 to Grand Avenue was permanently
closed on March 14. Work is being performed by Smith Paving,
Norwalk.
Drainage, curb replacement and resurfacing work are now
complete.
Final pavement markings and reconstruction of two traffic signals at Rosedale Ave. and Cole St. will occur in late June or July and
may result in short-term lane restrictions.

Gifts of thought from the over 60 crowd...

A Visit with Joan Geise
87Wise
Joan Geise graduated from
St Johns in 1947 and was
soon working in the office
management sector. For a
short time she worked for the
Better Business Bureau in
Lima. Joan said she knew she
liked the office work arena
and wanted to focus on the
role of secretary. To that end
she furthered her education
earning the equivalent of an
Associates degree (1949) from
the small business college (run
by Jules and Irene Burnett)
in Lima that would be the
forerunner of Northwestern
Business College and UNOH.
In the fall of 1949, Joan
began serving as secretary for
National Can Re-Tinning a
company that, you guessed it,
re-tinned milk cans. The company would grow with additional plants expanding to both
Minnesota and Tennessee.
Joan worked there for 10 years
but the advance to milk trucking would soon make re-tinning obsolete and the company
went out of business.
Joan was on to helping
her husband Hubert (married 1957) with the operation of the Chateau Bar on
Main Street in Delphos. She
recalled many enjoyable easy
going times in the 1950s and
60s at the Chateau where you
got to know the regular customers and a lot of nice people. (Friday afternoon check
cashing and keeping company
with many of the girls that
worked at the cigar factory in
town).
Joan lamented that it
became less fun as the bar
transitioned to bar & grill.
She said the food part of the
bar was a lot of work and very
little profit. Somewhere near
1980, they sold their part of
the ownership to Brownie
whom many may remember.
Losing Hubert in 1990,
Joan returned to work and
spent a number of years

flower arranging in several

flower shops in our area. (In
Delphos, Shawnee Road and
the American Mall). She especially enjoyed the interaction
with all the customers.
A few of Joans Favorites:
Season: The sun of
Summer and the football of
Fall. Joan said she has always
enjoyed soaking up the suns
vitamin D and the football of
the Blue Jays, Buckeyes and
Dallas Cowboys. (Since the
Staubach days).
Color: Yellow because its
so bright and sunny.
Food: I like anything but
liver and onions and have an
aversion to cooked spinach.
(Joan very much likes fresh
spinach in a salad)
Music: The Big Bands,
The Dorseys, and especially
Glenn Miller.
Car:
1954
white
Oldsmobile Delta 88 convertible (from CD Olds), black
top, red and white leather
seats. Nice!
Sports moment: Enjoying
many, many good times with
Blue Jay football and basketball.
School days memory:
Having a part in the Senior
Class Play Little Nellie
Kelly (1947) and remembered as a sophomore in high
school, World War II was
over. The idea that there

Country
June days bring garden goodies
and a boatload of bluegills
BY LOVINA EICHER
We have entered the month of June
already. It looks like we had just a little
bit of rain during the night, which we
really need! Last night we watered the
garden, as it was getting really dry. But
everything is coming up really well. We
are still enjoying radishes, green onions
and lettuce from our first planting earlier
this spring.
We had a nice three-day weekend
with a lot of fishing. On Friday evening
some went fishing on the lake, and then
went again Saturday and Monday.
On Sunday evening we ate outside
around the fire. The men deep-fried fish
and French fries. How nice to just sit
and watch.
Timothy and Elizabeth went to
church at his sisters house in another church district. We kept their dogs,
Izzy and Crystal, while they were gone.
Crystal doesnt like to be separated from
Elizabeth, but Izzy loves staying here.
She will go hide when she knows they
are leaving for home!
Saturday we had a short visit from
my sister Liz, Levi and family. Their
daughter Elizabeth and her husband
Samuel, and their baby LaRose were
also along, as was their daughter Rosas
special friend, Menno.
LaRose is around six months old and
looks like she doesnt lack attention. She
is Liz and Levis first grandchild, and
shes a sweetie. Daughter Elizabeth was
here and got to see LaRose for the first
time. Sister Liz is doing a great job at
being a grandma and spoiling her.
Joes sister Salome and husband
Morris are also first-time grandparents
now. Their daughter Katie Edna, and
husband Ben had a son named Benjamin.
Joe went to visit them while we were at
niece Lovinas wedding. I was a cook so
I didnt go with Joe. Hopefully Ill get
to meet little Benjamin soonmaybe at
the family gathering in July. Joes sister
Christine and Jake are planning to have
all of Joes family there on July 2. They
live about three hours north of here. We
are looking forward to seeing everyone
again. Its been awhile since weve seen
some of the family. Hope everyone will
make it!

On Monday, everyone went fishing

except daughters Elizabeth, Lovina and
I. Timothy had his boat out, and both
of ours were out as well. When they
started filleting fish, they had more than
200 bluegills! Timothys nephew was
also fishing and helped clean the fish.
Everyone was here for a pizza supper
before leaving Monday evening.
I usually have a bunch of bananas
hanging on a banana holder on my
countertop. Elizabeth took a banana and
started eating it. Son Kevin, 10, told
her that everyone needs to ask him for
a banana, since thats why Mom buys
them. He said that since shes married now, she doesnt have to ask him.
Elizabeth and I had a good laugh about
that after he went outside. I dont know
where he got the idea that the bananas
are his. I think he likes eating bananas
more than anyone else does. When he
was a little boy, he always asked for
bananas when he saw them at the store.
He wasnt very old, and he would call
them monkey. I think it was because
we would call him a monkey when he
was eating them.
I want to make rhubarb juice this
week. Daughter Elizabeth made several
batches and brought us a tastedelicious!
Susan is still working on getting her
wedding invitations out. She said she
didnt realize there was that much work
to get ready for a wedding. She said it
looked easier when Elizabeth did it.
I must get back to work. Gods blessings!

Trials and tribulations of cover crops

Many farmers had difficulty
getting crops planted this year
due to cold, wet soil; but now
most are hoping for some rain.
Farmers who planted cover
crops are also struggling to figure out how and when to plant
to maximize the grain crop
yield. Often this involves getting the cover crop killed at the
right time. When it is cold and
wet, often the best strategy is to
let the cover crop grow so it can
dry out the soil.
Farmers often have waited
too long to plant the cover crop
field because they think it is
too wet, but generally, cover
crops use evapotranspiration to
remove water from the soil and
the soil is actually drier 5-7 days
earlier than conventional fields.
That is a big advantage for using
the cover crop. Planting 5-7
days earlier generally results in
5-7 bushels of more soybeans.
However, if farmers wait too
long, the soil gets too dry and
hard and then farmers may lose
5-7 bushels of soybeans. I really
like to see soybeans coming
up before killing the cereal rye
unless the soil is getting too
dry. Unfortunately, government
crop insurance rules dictate that
all cover crops have to be killed
within 5 days of planting.
This year, many farmers
had difficulty with their closing
wheels in cereal rye. The soil
was hard or the trench would not
close. One strategy is to just plant
a little deeper and get the seed
down to moisture. Another strategy is to attach a log chain, 15-18
inches long, behind the closing
wheels on both side, and drag
that chain along in a half moon
through the rye. The chain will
knock some soil into the trench
and cover the seed. A third option
is to do some strip tillage in front
of the coulter or follow the planter with a light harrow to close
the trench. If farmers get .5-1.0
inch of rain, it generally is not a
problem. This year the rains have
been really light and the seeds are
slow to germinate or the soybean
stand is very patchy, germinating
at different times.
Some farmers killed their
cereal rye early and planted
early. However, they planted

soybeans into soils that stayed

cold and wet and the soybeans
never germinated and got
moldy. They are now replanting. Our experience has been
that all these problems start to
become less of an issue after
1-3 years, as the soil gains soil
organic matter and the soils
become more friable.
Several farmers commented
that they never want to let their
cereal rye get 4-6 feet tall again.
Most organic matter comes
from the roots (roots fully
mature by early spring), not the
stems and leaves, because stems
and leave decompose quickly.
However, in really wet years, it
is beneficial to let the cover crop
grow because it will dry out the
soil. The goal is to start planting
at the right time, and that is generally 5-7 days earlier than conventional farming. Each tillage
trip dries out the soil by .5 to 1.0
inch of water. Cover crops do
this naturally without using fuel.
Planting corn into cereal rye
can be tricky. Some farmers
killed their cereal rye early and
planted early and this appears
to be successful. Cereal rye may
have an allopathic effect planted
on corn by tying up nitrogen
and/or changing the microbial

community. A recommendation
is to use 40-60 pounds of nitrogen with the starter and plant
at least 2-3 weeks after killing
the cereal rye. This avoids the
microbial bridge associated with bacteria decomposing
young lush cereal plants which
are very similar to young emerging corn plants. By killing the
cereal rye 2-3 week before the
corn is planted, the bacteria
microbial population peaks and
crashes before the young corn
plants start to germinate, so the
young corn is not struggling to
compete with the bacteria as
either a disease organism or for
nutrients. Bacteria numbers fluctuate very quickly in the soil with
the availability of water and soil
nutrients. Give me a call if you
have questions (419-421-7255).
The hardest time farmer have
with converting to cover crops
and planting no-till crops is in
the first 1-3 years. Some of it is
just the learning curve and some
of it is just the fact that the soil
needs to change and improve
for this system to work. The
quicker farmers can make that
change, the more successful they
will become at improving their
crop yields and improving water
quality in Lake Erie.

Remember: The daily bag
limit for walleye in Ohio
waters of Lake Erie is 6 fish
per angler; minimum size
limit is 15 inches. The
daily bag limit for yellow
perch is 30 fish per angler in
all Ohio waters of Lake Erie.
The trout and salmon daily
bag limit is 5 fish per angler
through August 31; minimum
size limit is 12 inches.
Black bass (largemouth and
smallmouth bass): Through
June 24, possession is prohibited (catch and release only).

Western Basin
Walleye: Walleye fishing has
been good off Crane Creek, near
A and E buoys of the Camp
Perry firing range, within 1 mile of
the Portage River, around Clinton
Reef, off Mouse Island, near
Rattlesnake Island, between South
Bass and Kelleys islands and east of
the Kelleys Island airport. Most fish
have been caught by trolling with
crankbaits or worm harnesses, or by
casting with weight-forward spinners
or mayfly rigs.
Yellow Perch: Yellow perch have
been caught off the Marblehead
Lighthouse, southwest of Kelleys
Island on American Eagle Shoal
and south of Ballast Island. Perchspreaders with shiners fished near
the bottom produce the most fish.
Central Basin
Walleye: Some walleye have
been caught 1-2 miles north of

Cranberry Creek, in 25-35 feet of

water off Sheffield and near Avon
Point. Good fishing was reported in
40 feet northeast of Gordon Park in
Cleveland, in 19-25 feet northwest
of the Chagrin River, in 50-60 feet
north of Geneva and in 40-60 feet
northwest of Ashtabula. Anglers are
trolling planer boards or dipsy divers
with tiger striped stick baits or blue,
red and green worm harnesses.
Yellow Perch: Fishing has
been fair in 26-36 feet north of
Gordon Park, in 22-25 feet north of
Wildwood Park, in 34 feet northeast
of Lakeshore Park in Ashtabula and
in 30 feet north of Conneaut. Fishing
from shore has been spotty off the
East 55th Street and East 72nd Street
piers in Cleveland. Perch-spreaders
with shiners fished near the bottom
produce the most fish.
Smallmouth Bass: Fishing has
been excellent in 10-25 feet of water
around the harbor areas in Cleveland,
Fairport Harbor, Geneva, Ashtabula
and Conneaut. Anglers are using
crankbaits, leeches and crayfish.
The Lake Erie water temperature is 70 off Toledo and 55 off
Cleveland, according to the nearshore marine forecast.

Fisheries Tools of the Trade:
Electrofishing Surveys
About 1 in 4 fishing trips to Ohio
reservoirs are made by anglers pursuing largemouth, smallmouth and
spotted bass.
Every spring, to keep tabs on
those bass populations, Division of
Wildlife crews use specialized boats
called electrofishers to put an electrical charge into the water and survey the bass in Ohio reservoirs. The
fish that encounter the electrical field

produced by the boat are temporarily stunned, allowing them to be

netted and placed in a large livewell
until they can be counted, measured,
weighed and returned to the water.
These surveys provide biologists
with the information they need to
maintain quality bass populations
throughout the state, in a way that is
safe for the bass that are collected.
Bass are an extremely valuable component of Ohios reservoir fish communities and with the information
gained from electrofishing surveys,
Division biologists will ensure that
our bass populations will continue to
thrive for years to come.

Licolnview tops Van

Wert 7-6 in ACME
By Jim Cox
DHI Media Correspondent
sports@timesbulletin.com

MIDDLE POINT
Lincolnview and Van Wert,
two teams with lots of
new players, slugged it out
Wednesday evening in an
interesting ACME game that
was won by the Lancers, 7-6.
Lincolnview moves to 1-6
while Van Wert falls to 2-5.
It was 3-3 through 5 1/2
innings before the action
picked up considerably.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Lincolnviews bats came
alive against Cougar reliever
Connor Army. With one out,
Braxton Fox smoked a liner
that Army knocked down but
couldnt find in time to get
Fox at first. Ethan Parsons
bunted Fox over before
Chayten Overholt lined a single to center. Gavin Carter
ripped a single to left, scoring
Fox with the go-ahead run
and putting runners on the
corners again. Jaden Youtsey
drove in both Overholt and
Carter with a double down
the left-field line and Braden
Evans plated Youtsey with a
single to center. Lancers led
7-3 after six.
That 4-run lead proved to
be enough barely.
The Van Wert bats, too,
came alive off of Lancer
reliever Carter in the top of
the seventh. John Lee led off
with a double down the leftfield line, then scored when

Blackmore doubled to the
left-centerfield gap, scoring
Eddins, went to third on a
wild pitch and scored on a
groundout by Nate Temple.
Van Wert had jumped out
to a 2-0 lead in the top of
the first on singles by Eddins
and Gutierrez followed by a
Lincolnview throwing error.
The Lancers tied it with
two unearned runs in the third
on only one hit, a double by
Parsons, taking advantage of
two walks and two errors.
The two starters, Eddins
for Van Wert and Parsons for
Lincolnview, had similar statistics, each giving up three
runs, only one of which was
earned.
Neither figured in the
decision; that was left up to
relievers Army for the Cougs
and Carter for the Lancers.

Even though during the
ACME Summer Baseball

limited, it still comes down to
the basics of hitting, fielding
and pitching.
Both St. Johns and
Jefferson struggled both at
the plate combining for
nine hits and in the field
(10 errors, 6 by the host
Wildcats).
In the end, the Blue Jays
had a 3-run seventh inning
and grabbed a 6-4 victory on
a gorgeous late-spring evening at Wildcat Field.
After the Wildcats (3-3)
rallied to take the lead 4-3 in
the bottom of the sixth, St.
Johns (4-0) answered those
runs against third Jefferson
hurler Brenan Auer. Eric Vogt
grounded a single into left,
took second on an error on a
pickoff try and tied it courtesy of a triple to the right-center fence by Buddy Jackson.
An error on Josh Warneckes
grounder plated the runner for
a 5-4 edge. Jacob Youngpeter
walked and an out later,
Corey Koverman blooped a
hit down the left-field line
to load the bases. Chandler
Skym flied out to center to
get Warnecke in for a 6-4
lead and sent Youngpeter to
third but Auer got the final
out to leave it a 2-run deficit.

to keep on the infield. Both
runners advanced on a passed
ball and scored on a 2-run
opposite-field double to left

center by Youngpeter for a

3-1 lead by the Jays.
Jefferson went up 4-3 in
the bottom of the sixth. With
two down, including Troy
Elwer robbing Brett Mahlie
with a sliding catch in center,
Auer legged out an infield hit
to the hole at deep short and
Stockwell and Jordan Boop
worked a free pass to load the
sacks. An error on Shurelds
grounder plated Auer and
Shrider lined a single to center to score Stockwell and
Boop home for a 4-3 edge
and bringing Vogt in.
St. Johns is in an LCC
tournament at 10 a.m. today
and Sunday at Simmons
Field, while Jefferson is at
Van Wert 6 p.m. Monday.

Participation is determined by random computer-generated drawings. Applications may not be faxed or
emailed. Application fees are non-refundable. Hunters
may apply for and participate in, as either a hunter or a
partner, no more than one hunt per area, per year. Hunters
who fail to adhere to this rule risk disqualification and
loss of their application fee. Drawings will be held for
each area and each hunt date. Drawings are held in early
August for the early waterfowl hunts and in September
for all others.
Hunters can apply for the controlled hunts by completing the application process online using the Wild
Ohio Customer Center at wildohio.gov or by calling
800-WILDLIFE (800-945-3543) and requesting a mail-in
application. There is a non-refundable application fee of
$3 per hunt.
Successful applicants will be notified and provided
additional hunt information by mail and email. Applicants
are encouraged to visit the Wild Ohio Customer Center to
view the status of their application and, if selected, print
their controlled hunt permit.
More specific information about hunt dates and locations, including opportunities dedicated to youth, women
and mobility-impaired hunters, can be found at wildohio.
gov on the Controlled Hunts page. ODNR ensures a
balance between wise use and protection of our natural
resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website
at ohiodnr.gov.

Learning how to hunt wild game can be a challenge
if you dont have anyone to show you how. If you want
to learn about the basics of hunting, you are invited to
attend a 5-session start-up program that will give you the
skills you need to start this fun tradition. The introductory meeting will be offered at the Pomeroy Library in
Meigs County, W. 216 Main St, Pomeroy, Ohio 45769
on Thursday, June 23 at 5:30pm. If you have questions,
please call Chelsea Herrick at 740-589-9942.

Grand River Wildlife Area acreage rows
AKRON Thanks to generous donations from
the Trumbull County Federation of Sportsmans Clubs,
the Northern Ohio Chapter of the American Woodcock
Society, the National Wild Turkey Federation and the
Mosquito Creek Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited, a total
of 21.43 acres of land adjacent to Grand River Wildlife
Area (GRWA) was recently purchased, according to the
ODNR.
The four partner organizations fully covered 25%
(over $8,000) of the costs. The remaining 75% of the purchase price was paid with federal aid reimbursable funds
acquired through the Pittman-Robertson Act.
This purchase will square off our current landholdings
as well as help to bridge the gap between the northern
and southern parcels at GRWA. The new parcel will add
a young forest component in order to diversify the wet
forest that encompasses much of GRWA.
It is a unique and wild place that is enjoyed my many
different types of enthusiasts visiting from Youngstown to
Cleveland. This area will take you back in time before the
great swamps were drained. This vast track of wet forest,
marshes, and streams offer a challenge to the hunters that
choose to navigate it.

Everybody knows the name,

or maybe not Kalsch

Excerpt from In the Wildwood by Scott

Vandehey
Johann Peter Kalsch married Maria
Elizabethe Koehn, a frauleinn from
Kaifenheim. Here the couple settled and
raised their family for 13 years before moving
to America.
p. 14 Johann and Elizabeth Kalsch farmed
during their 13 years in Kaifenheim. As peasants, they never lived on their land and along
with their neighbors, they plowed their fields
with a team of oxen in the fall and planted
their winter grain. In the winter months with
snow and frost on the ground, they cut and
hauled wood that was close; oak, beech and
fir were abundant.
Springtime was also time to plant their
gardens and tend their flower boxes set in
place by their windows. Summer and autumn
were harvest time. Most villages gathered
fruit from their orchards which they carefully
stored in haylofts to protect them from the
severe cold during the long winter nights. In
the 1840s, the slopes from Koblenz to Mayen
were noted throughout the Rhineland for their
fruit orchards.
Arriving in New York Harbor on August 16,
1843, Johann moved his family and meager
baggage along the dock to catch steamboat
passage up the Hudson River to Albany. 150
milesMany steamers plied this river channel
carrying thousands of immigrants who desired
to find land out west in the Ohio Valley until
railroad tracks changed the course of transportation in the 1850s. Several miles north of
Albany, the weary immigrants took the Erie
Canal west to Buffalo on Lake Erie.
Johann settled his family in the German
settlement of Avon, a few miles inland from
Lake Erie in Lorain County (the burgomeister
in Kaifenheim showed Scott Vandehey the
village records of 1843, thirteen families left
for America - none were recorded, but from
ship records Johann and Elizabeth Kalsch
were one of those families.)
Johann Peter Kalsch was born 6 January
1802 in Hambuch, Cochem-Zell, RheinlandPfalz, Germany to Johann (1737 - 1803) and
Anna Maria (Wilhelmi) (1765 - 1849) Kalsch.
On 5 June 1827, in Hambuch, Johann Peter
married Anna Maria Claus, born 24 January
1796, daughter of Peter and Anna Barbara
(Laubenthal) Claus.
Anna Maria (Claus) Kalsch died 9 March
1830, shortly after the stillbirth of her son
Johann Kalsch on 28 February 1830. A month
after the death of his first wife, Johann married Maria Elizabeth Koehn Khn, born 1
April 1801 in Kaifenheim, on 15 April 1830
in Kaifenheim, Cochem-Zell, RheinlandPfalz, Germany
Seven children were born to Johann and
Maria Elizabeth (Koehn/Khn) Kalsch.

here their last child, Catharine, was born in
November 1847.
Five children lived to adulthood and married;

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps

An often overlooked and

underused source of local
history is the Sanborn Fire
Insurance Maps. While fire
insurance maps date to the
18th century, the Sanborn
maps date to 1867.
In 1866, Daniel Sanborn
was employed by the Aetna
Insurance Company to produce insurance maps of several communities in Tennessee.
The fire insurance maps produced by Sanborn showed
building footprints, building
material, height or number of
stories, building use, lot lines,
road widths and water facilities. The maps also show street
names and property boundaries of the time. Seeing a lucrative market in producing maps
for this purpose, he founded
the D. A. Sanborn National
Insurance Diagram Bureau in
New York City, which soon
became the largest business of
its kind in the United States.
The maps were used by insurance companies to assess the
liability of a building.
Maps of Delphos begin in
1884 and run to 1921. The
1884 edition consists of only
four pages of illustrations of
the towns structures, focusing on industry and the down-

town. These maps show that in

1884 the current location of the
Canal Museum was home to a
harness shop, barber and coffins. The maps also list the
names of the citys streets as
they were before being updated in 1890. Fourth Street was
then known as Water Street
with Second and Third streets
named South and North Main
respectively. The Delphos
Iron Works was located at the
current site of the Franklin
Elementary School.
In 1904, the Delphos
German School is located at
First and Franklin streets. The
Kundert Livery, the current
Museum of Postal History,
stood just south of the Flick
Block, which housed the
interesting combination of an
undertaker and a saloon. To
cross the canal on Fifth Street
required the use of a swing
bridge.
In 1911, Walter Trentmans
greenhouses were located at
Eighth and Scott streets while
the Cincinnati, Hamilton and
Dayton Railway roundhouse
stood along Washington Street
south of Cleveland Street. The
bustling Toledo, St. Louis
and Western Railroad Shops
occupied acres of ground on

the citys north side and stood

across Main Street from the
Hinde and Dauch Delphos
Paper Mill which used power
from the canal to operate its
machinery.
By 1921, the maps included all residences in the city.
Of interest is the Rapid Bottle
Washing Company located at
Washington and Tenth streets.
The new Capitol Theater
boasted a capacity of 700 and
stood across the street from
another movie house. On the
corner of Fourth and Main
streets stood the Hotel Delphos
which, along with lodging,
boasted billiards, a restaurant, soft drinks and tobacco.
Meanwhile the Fort Wayne,
Van Wert and Lima Traction
Lines ran down Second Street
to the Interurban Station located where WDOH is today.
Some of these maps can be
found at the Delphos Public
Library or you can visit the
entire collection online at
www.oplin.org. They are a
great resource to view a snapshot of Delphos during a specific period of history. You can
also find homes and outbuildings on the maps, possibly the
house youre living in today.

What summer
means to me
The crack of the bat. The squeal of a
child going down the slide at the pool. The
whir of bicycle tires on hot asphalt.
Summer is here!
I know I sound like a school kid on a
much-anticipated break. Nothing could be
further from the truth. Theres no lazing
around in the morning or meeting friends
to ride around or waiting at the pool until
noon when the gates open I am an
adult. Somehow I dont think its a coincidence its a four-letter word.
Some days I dont want to adult. Some
days I cant manage adult. Please dont
make me adult today!
I sit on the porch in the early morning
taking in the days first rays of the sun and
kids are already out and about. I can hear
the neighbor boys down on Tenth Street
with their dogs and Ringo comes to the
door, cocks his head and looks at me as
if to say, Why am I in here? I should out
there playing with you.
Sorry, Ringo, were doing adult today.
I can tell he doesnt think much of the
concept. Some days, I dont either. Oh
the joy of having endless days stretching
before and the most difficult decisions

what fun activity should I do first.

I can remember those days before I
started working with my dad during the
summer. The neighborhood was packed
with kids and at any given moment, a
kickball or football game could break out.
Perhaps a rousing game of Hide n Seek
or tag was in order.
There was never a lack of things to
do. We didnt sit in the house clutching
a device trying to kill something or race
something. We went outside and got the
stink blown off us as my parents used
to say.
From the time the sun came up until it
went down, we were outside taking only
small breaks for lunch, dinner and perhaps
a snack or two. Those small respites were
almost too much to bear as I was sure I
was missing something! I would often
talk my mom into feeding all of us a little
something so everything would stop.
For a few months, the parks will be
full, the swimmers will make enough
noise for me to hear in the house if the
windows are open and dust will coat
the sink in the mudroom as the Boys of
Summer kick up dirt as they round the

bases and slide home.

Since I am an adult, the passage of
summer will be marked with different
events and celebrations. Relay was first
yesterday and then the Putnam County
Fair. Close on its heels is Fourth of July
which seems to be shaping up into quite
the gig again this year with three days of
celebration.
Once we get past the Fourth, summer
seems to melt away. Not long after, I will
start receiving back-to-school information
and registrations times, two fairs will
come and go and the next thing you know,
Im in the classroom on the first day of
school taking photos.
And so it goes.
I never believed anyone when they told
me that the older you get, the faster the
times goes until I got older. Wow! They
werent kidding. I look back on different
stories weve done and I cant figure out
how the time got away from me.
So my summer plan is to stop and
smell the roses at least once so I know I
had a summer. Hopefully, even if for a
day, I can say I cant do adult today! and
I will mean it and it will be so.

orange haircolor now a decade

is on to combat years of wind,

Last weekend I bought
a lovely shea butter and
beeswax balm from Denny
Coates. The Baptist pastors
Red Bird concoction smells
like sweet honey from heaven, so much so that I dont dare
leave the little jar where the dogs can get it.
So concerned have I become about the texture and health
of skin that Sophie the potbelly is getting regular applications
of whatever I think might slough and soften her old hide. An
early diet of table scraps, frostbite and cookies brought her and
her rugged skin our way. Last week the lotion was lavender.
This week, I poured a coating of hemp oil across her shoulders. She tried to eat the jar.
A night or two ago, My Steven stood next to me at the sink,
a puzzled expression on his face as he watched me rub a gritty
cleanser across my pores.
Didnt you just shower? he asked.
Yes, I said, with a tsk and an eye-roll. This removes
dead skin, the harsh effects of commercial soaps and diminishes age spots.
He grinned, probably picturing the young woman he met
years ago, the one who fell asleep, head back, soaking up
midday summer suns.

Who dare say America isnt great?

Everyones world view is shaped
by what he or she has seen in life.
And all of us have seen something
different. Our great-grandparents saw
the Great Depression. Our grandparents lived through World War II. Our
parents (baby boomers) dealt with
high (20%) inflation. Millennials have
enjoyed a 0% interest environment.
Presumptive GOP presidential
nominee Donald Trump challenges
his supporters To Make America
Great Again. That sounds good but
it assumes the vast majority of voters
feel America has declined as a world
leader and is no longer respected. It
depends on ones perspective.
If you happen to be one of the 40
million most recent immigrants now
calling America home, you probably think America is already great. If
you arrived in America with just the
clothes on your back, fleeing a country
being ravaged by killers and looters,
America is without a doubt the greatest place on Earth.
Heres a thought I got from the
May 1 edition of NBCs Meet The
Press. If America and its NATO allies
find a way to crush ISIS, the resulting

internal fight in the Middle East for

control will be even worse than it is
now as Shiites, Sunnis and the Kurds
wage war for power.
What would need to transpire to
end this family feud?

Rachel Morrissette, advertising manager of the Gallup (N.M.)

sell, sell like your kids are hungry.
She said her boss once told her
that and it stuck. When working in
the advertising department, the whole
newspaper and all of its employees are
depending on you to make the sales.
Morrissette said, not only is my family depending on me to bring home
the bacon, all of the employees of the
paper and their families are relying on
me to bring home the bacon.
As with all people in sales, the
customers are also relying on the sales

JUST A
THOUGHT
BY SARA BERELSMAN
The dictionary defines forgive as to
grant pardon from or remission of an offense
or debt. Sounds easy enough, right?
So why is forgiveness so hard? Why are
there feuds lasting years, even among family
members? Well, for starters, I think many people dont want to apologize. It means admitting one is wrong. People tend to not like
admitting that. In my experience, although not
necessary, it helps the cause of the person in
question to be forgiven if they have first asked
for my forgiveness. And not just asked, but
asked in a genuine way.
Of course, its not mandatory that someone
ask for forgiveness to get it. I just think it
might increase the chances. There are plenty
of people in my life who have never asked for
my forgiveness, but I have still forgiven them.
Or have I?
How do you know when youve forgiven
someone? Well, thats another thing about forgivenessnot forgiving someone only hurts
you, and not so much the other person in
question. Holding onto hate, anger, even hurt,
can take a toll on someone. Once you let go
of these feelings, you instantly feel lighter. I
guess thats how I know Ive forgiven someone. When I can think of that person and no
longer feel my chest tighten up immediately,

As many of you know, I still do
not have a Smartphone. I do have
a TracFone. I carry it when I leave
home, but just for emergencies. It is
never turned on. I cant tell you my
number. The last time I made a call
with the phone was in October 2014.
Ive decided I will not consider
getting a Smartphone until Samsung
and Apple announce they have run out
of ideas for improving their phones.
I dont want to get into the routine
of updating my phone every six to
12 months when the industry giants
decide to tempt users with new features.
I want Apple and Samsung to say
the Smartphone is as good as it will
ever getno more upgrades, what
you see is all youre going to get. The
current phone can do everything for
you. There is nothing left to add.
Could it be possible? Imagine a
Smartphone that is the right size, the

a super-computer inside, a camera

to forgive
is divine
no longer feel rage at the mention of his or
her name, no longer feel bitter about the relationship or what went wrong. I have forgiven
many people over the years who didnt say
they were sorry or ask for my forgiveness.
And I felt better when I did it.
Then there is the hardest person to forgive.
Yourself. While I can forgive ex-boyfriends
or fake friends for hurting me, there are still
things Ive done in my life that I havent quite
forgiven myself for. I know the healthy thing
would be to forgive myself and let go of some
of those negative feelings we put on other
people when theyve done us wrong. We put
those feelings on ourselves when we cant
seem to let go of the things weve done that
we deem unforgivable. If I want to get spiritual for a moment, I know a higher power would
have forgiven us for everything weve done,
so why cant we forgive ourselves? I think
we can. At least, I think I can. Itll just take a
while. But I think it will happen.
In the meantime, Ill work on it. If there are
people, or you yourself, who need forgiving,
try to work on it. Holding onto resentment is
only hurting you. Once you forgive, itll feel
like a ton of bricks lifted off your chest. Just
work on it a little bit, day by day. Eventually,
I know youll get there.
And if Im wrong, please forgive me.

thought Housel shared a year ago.
Most people have an urge to overcomplicate things. Heres my blueprint for success: live below your

We ended up at Dairy

enjoy some air conditioning

We were just sitting there
when an older lady came up

have you girls tried this lemonade. Its delicious!
It was the way she said it
that we just thought it was

as soon as she left.
Our laughing tripled when
one of my friends turned and
spit her ice cream in my sisters face as she let out her
laugh she was holding in.
At 11 or 12 years old, we
thought this was going to be
the most random part of our

When we couldnt control our laughter, we decided to go outside and sit at

Housel says we all think were

believes they have a fool-proof system. The evidence is overwhelming:
the odds that you will achieve longterm success by actively trading or

Housel warns: We listen to the

I am embarrassed to say I

time. I wish I could go back
in time with the knowledge I

again, I like my story. I like
how at ease he was with us
and our five minute conversation that was ended with him
saying how much he liked ice

The Herald 13

Captain America: Civil War

What do superheroes do when
theyre not saving the planet? A lot of the
same things everyone else doesthey
prattle around the house, do their best to
get along and sometimes get on each others nerves.
Whos putting coffee grounds in the
disposal? Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.)
asks his houseguests, which include Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Scarlet Witch
(Elizabeth Olsen), War Machine (Don
Cheadle) and Vision (Paul Bettany). Am
I running a bed and breakfast for a biker
gang?
Crammed into a back of a tiny VW
Beetle, the hulking Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) has a request of Falcon
(Anthony Mackie). Could you move
your seat up? Like a grumpy sibling
on a family road trip thats already overstretched his patience, Falcon isnt exactly in an agreeable mood. No! he snaps.
Captain America: Civil War is a big,
sprawling superhero mega-movie, with
more spandex to the gallon than any flick
thats come down the pike in a long time.
The latest in the multi-billion-dollar Marvel cinematic canon, its officially the
third of the Captain America franchise,
but its also a continuation of the Avengers movie arc, and it ropes in characters
from other Marvel movie properties as
well, including Iron Man, Ant-Man (Paul
Rudd) and even the new Spider-Man
(Tom Holland), whose movie wont be in
theaters until next summer.
The Civil War in the title refers to
the major rift that occurs within the Avengers when a United Nations panel wants
to rein them in. The global community is
concerned about the civilian deaths and
wakes of destruction that accompany the
superheroes bad-guy smackdownsa
theme that also cropped up a few weeks
ago in another comics-character slugfest,
Batman v Superman.
The Avengers divide into two camps
about the issuethose who feel that
some international oversight and cooperation is the way to go (led by Iron Man),
and the rebels who refuse to sign the accord (team Captain America). That sets
the stage for several spats, a couple of
subplots, more than two hours of squabbles and one stupendous battle royale in
an abandoned airport.
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo
keep things moving along with style,
substance and significant flair, and they
give all their characters time to shine
no easy task when they are so many, including newcomers Chadwick Boseman
as an African prince who becomes the
Black Panther; Marissa Tomei as Peter
Parkers Aunt May; and Daniel Brhl as
the Eastern European ber-villain Zemo.
Theres also Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye,

Martin Freeman as a CIA official, Emily Van Camp (from TVs Revenge) as
Sharon Carter, and William Hurt as the
U.S. Secretary of State. Oscar-nominated
Alfre Woodard pops in as an aggrieved
mom.
But through it all are the Avengers,
the worlds coolest, most powerful cadre
of superfriendsfamily, actuallybeing
ripped apart, fractured from within, pulverizing each other as the divide between
them, widened by treachery, becomes
filled with distrust, dark secrets and deep
wounds from the past.
Theres a whole army of frozen Winter Soldiers, a funeral and a sweet kiss
between two characters that may point to
future romance.

How does this wham-bam, jampacked road trip on the superhero

highway end? I wont spoil it. But you
shouldnt be surprised to know that even
when it does, it doesnt, and that the Mar-

vel movie map is still being drawn for

Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man
and other characters for years to come!

10 Years Ago 2006
The trustees of the Delphos Stadium Club
announced plans to install additional engraved
brick pavers at the Hanser Family Pavilion at
Stadium Park. Proceeds from the pavers are
earmarked for 2006 park projects including a
new batting cage, new restrooms, new concession facility, sidewalks and lighting. Pavers
will be inscribed with the donors name or
business name.
Dorothy Fischer of Delphos was the winner of the first Delphos Family Assistance
Fund, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.
Jay Ulm presented her with a check for
$10,000. The DFAF is planning an annual
raffle to raise money for families in Delphos
who need assistance.
The St. Johns Blue Jays and Lincolnview
Lancers ACME baseball contest on Friday
night started out to be, in the words of
Lincolnview ACME coach Jason Adams, a
spring game. The Lancers scored twice in
the second and fifth innings on their way to
a 5-1 victory over their foe. The game started
out to be somewhat of a pitchers duel with
Brett Davis and St. Johns starter Kyle Klaus
matching each other inning for inning.
25 Years Ago 1991
General Barnett took the lead to win the
six furlong $30,000 Ohio Senior Stakes race
at River Downs in Cincinnati. The 5-yearold thoroughbred, owned by Jim and Joan
McCoy, and Wayne and Chris Long, all of
Elida, has won over $150,000 in purses since
they purchased it as a 2-year-old. The biggest
stakes win for their gelding was the first ever
Best of Ohio Spring for a $30,000 purse.
Marion Township now has a five-man

chief will be appointed, according to trustee
Joe Youngpeter. A township police will patrol
the entire township after 6 p.m. Officers
on the force serve in a full-time capacity with other law enforcement departments,
Youngpeter said.

Numerous activities brought hundreds to the park, including mini cheerleading and football camps, special Delphos

scavenger hunt and more.
The swimming pool was also open from 8:30-9:30 p.m. for
Relayers.
Raabe Fords Kevin Lindeman and Tom McKee of First
Assembly of God competed for the Miss Relay title. The pair
had 20 minutes to go through the crowd and collect money to
win the crown. Lindeman earned $273 for the win and McKee
earned $102.
This years goal is $54,000.
The event was held from 6 p.m. to midnight and also included a luminaria lighting and closing ceremony.

Answers to Wednesdays questions:

While they were best known for protecting the president,
U.S. Secret Service was originally created to deal with counterfeit money. In 1865, when the Secret Service was formed, its
estimated that between one-third and one-half of all the currency
circulating in America was counterfeit.
Artist Patrick Acton from Iowa built a complete model
of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
entirely out of matchsticks. It took Acton almost three
years to build his model, which he based on the Harry
Potter films version of the castle. He used more than
602,000 matchsticks and held them together with 15
gallons of wood glue.
Todays questions:
This hand-held video game system debuted in 1989 and came
bundled with the game Tetris. What was it called?
In 1959, the U.S. Postal Service attempted to deliver
mail using what potentially deadly weapon?

Siefker laid to rest in fitting style

Ron Siefker was laid to rest on Tuesday. In keeping with his love of old cars and his lifes
work at Siefker Sawmill, his casket, made of barn side oak from a nearly 200-year-old
tobacco farm in Louisiana, was taken to Walnut Grove Cemetery in the back of Siefkers
1949 International pick-up truck. Fellow Delphos Area Car Club members also drove
their vintage vehicles to the cemetery. (DHI Media/Nancy Spencer)

Edinger will remain a

Jefferson football coach.
Week 10 is going to be
interesting this fall, Edinger
noted.
As Edinger steps out, Chad
Brinkman will step in. He has
been in the district for 17
years and hopes to continue the atmosphere of success
and cooperation in the high
school.
I feel lucky to have learned
under John and honored to try
and fill his shoes. John was
always looking ahead to keep
the staff prepared and deflected issues from the teachers
that allowed us to focus on the
success of our students. He
had broad shoulders and did
his job without complaint,
Brinkman said.
