THE ST. MICHAEL PARISH

Located at Poblacion II of Marilao, built in April 21, 1796 by Padre Vicente de Talavera. It
has been rebuilt in 1902 and 1922 and finally finished by Fr. Jose M. Salas. It is hundred
years old spiritual edifice in Poblacion I considering as place marker and serve as point of
orientation to the local residents and visitors. In 2002, its altar has been undergone in
renovation using Narra with gold leaf design.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
A. Landscape
General Landscape Development
- Building and site development should reflect the dignity of the Church and
sensitivity to the site and region without inferring opulence. For most sites, future
-

building expansion areas should be simple and clean.

Besides vegetation function above, it also absorbs dust and air pollutant and
reduces noise. Kind and density of vegetation influence heat efficiency in
building. Ground covered by grass and bush absorb dust from air. Besides
providing comfort for occupants by natural ventilation, vegetation also beautifies
settlement environment.
1. Existing irrigation systems may have steel pipe or brass heads and valves
or shrubs may be closely planted at the foundation of the building.
2. Landscapes of seminary and institute buildings should be complimentary
to or an enhancement of their surrounding neighborhoods. It should also
consider the following:
Keep sites well lighted trees and shrubs should not block lights.
Use shrub species that will not exceed 3 feet in height.
Design shrub and tree areas with security and safety in mind

avoiding hiding places.

Use low spreading shrubs or groundcovers where local ordinances

require large amounts of shrub beds, etc.

Use appropriate bark or rock mulches in areas where turf is
restricted or not allowed.

Avoid creating extensive hardscape areas that may be an invitation

for skateboarding. Provide skateboard deterrent design where

reasonable, effective, and without excessive associated costs.

Landscapes of mission presidents office additions should match

those of adjacent meetinghouse facilities.

To enhance building entries and views of the building from the
street:
o Framing views to the building with appropriate trees and
shrubs.
o Increasing color and texture to accentuate the entries.
o Not overplanting and obscuring architectural features such

as windows and signs.

To reduce maintenance and care of plant use the following:
o Reduce the number of plants and turf that demand water,
pest control and fertilizing frequently.
o Reduce the number of plants near the building foundation.
o Increase the use of bark and rock mulch as a ground cover
element in place of lawns.
o Reduce shrub and tree hedging pruning by:
Locating plants at proper distances from walks,
parking areas, buildings and mow strips to allow for

natural maturation and growth of plants.

Specifying plants that are typically does not require

excessive pruning.
For long term cost savings maintenance, provide plants and trees
that is appropriate for the climates, grades and soil conditions. Like

..?
For trees, avoid specifying trees that are messy like fruit-bearing
trees, seed pods, bark, etc. To have invasive root systems, or create
safety hazards like thorns. Select the trees that are in proper scale
with the building. To prevent damage to the building, unauthorized
roof access, and appearance of overgrowth, large trees should be
located away from the building. Unless it is directed, trees should
be grouped in natural arrangements so that future replacements will
not require excessive expense. Larger trees with a caliper of 2-3
inches may be specified at building and driveway entrances.

Smaller trees may be used in areas where significant numbers are

required such as on a hillside or reforested areas.

For shrubs and ground covers, reduce the number of plants 6-8 feet
from the building to avoid excessive amounts of water at the
building foundation shrubs should be used that will fit within the
planter area when mature. The scale of the building may necessitate
a lesser separation. Avoid planting shrubs close to the building or
too close to the edge of the planter or walk where excessive
trimming will be required. Ornamental shrubs should be 3-5 gallon
size, shrubs and ground covers that mature in a single growing
season should be delivered in 1 gallon containers and spaced
appropriately depending upon the type of plant. Other ground
covers should be provided in 4-6 inches pots and spaced
appropriately to mass within 2-3 growing seasons. Annual flower
beds are not authorized. These beds increase the amount of
maintenance required for the site.

OTHERS?

Roof angle is effective to solve climate problems (rainfall, roof cover, and air velocity) by using 45 of
angle.
Small open space and bend path constitute air movement restriction in tropical-humid region. It is
proposed to have large open space dimension and vegetation to provide shadow area and optimal air
movement.

Smooth natural ventilation in building can be obtained because of vegetation absorbs sun radiation.
Grass, paving and damp ground can reduce sun radiation so it causes air to become cooler.
Traditional architecture concept in tropical humid area has strong relation with climate.
Building orientation has strong correlation with wind direction and sun radiation.
Roof shape and construction has direct influence on building temperature. It also has a little influence
on eliminating heat accumulation by providing optimal air movement in building. It has been proved
that using flat roof surface has high wind velocity than on pointed roof that has optimal wind velocity
obtained.
Shades can benefit the people for protection against the heat of the tropical sun.
Canopy above drop-off areas is a useful solution to protect incoming or outgoing guests of a building
complex from the pouring rain.
