For African farm families, a little goes a long ways. It costs
One Acre Fund only $240 to provide the farm inputs,
education, and market-access to empower two families of
six to double their farm profit for a year. It will cost only
$1,000 to hire a full-time field officer in Kenya or Rwanda,
and $10,000 to support an entire village of sixty families.

Without food, there’s no future
For most families in rural East Africa, there is no
future beyond the next meal.
Hunger is the number one killer of African children,
more than any single disease. Hunger weakens the
immune system in the majority of child deaths, and
creates an avenue for simple diseases to kill children.
Hunger is the number one reason that one in seven
children dies before age five, and that nearly half of
those who survive are physically stunted.
Summer. Fall. Winter. Hunger.
The “hunger season” is the name of an actual season,
all across Sub-Saharan Africa. When the harvest runs
out, rural families endure an average of three months
of hunger. During this time they eat whatever they
can – perhaps only drinking a cup of thin flour
porridge. These are the families One Acre Fund
was created to serve.
The paradox is, they are farmers
75% of the world’s hungry people are farmers. Our
families have the basic means to produce enough food
to live on. What they lack is the knowledge of modern
farming techniques, the capital to buy planting mate-
rial and fertilizer, and access to markets where they can
sell what they grow.
One Acre Fund makes a permanent
difference
One Acre Fund provides a small amount of environ-
mentally sensitive seed and fertilizer on credit, weekly
farm training in the farmers’ own fields, and market
access. We empower farmers to double their farm
profit within six months. We make private markets
possible for rural farm families, creating a permanent
path for change.

Meet Christine, a widow with four children. She
farms a half-acre of land by hand using Bronze Age tech-
niques, and yields only enough food to feed her family for
eight months out of the year. Severe, annual hunger caused
her to lose one child, and two of her children are physically
stunted from lack of food.
Christine has been left behind by most humanitarian
organizations, which are not set up to reach hunger-stricken
farm families. Yet, given the chance, Christine is completely
capable of increasing her farm profit by 100% within six
months, and eventually growing completely out of poverty.
One Acre Farm is here to give her that chance.
We provide a comprehensive solution that
makes it realistic for Christine and farmers like
her to hope for more: a solution that recognizes
all of the challenges in their lives.
One Acre Fund works with existing local self-help groups,
organizes them into stable five-family subgroups and
provides education, capital for materials, ongoing support
and access to markets where they can sell their surplus. We
provide a comprehensive solution that makes it realistic for
Christine and farmers like her to hope for more: a solution
that recognizes all of the challenges in their lives.
