TEIN Network Training Workshop

Workshop on TEIN Network Monitoring Applications - October 15

17, 2015
Introduction
PERN offers true packet switched network which is required for research and
collaboration in areas like VoIP, grid computing, high energy physics,
telemedicine, research related video and images exchange, enterprise level video
conferencing. It is a highly resilient network and the availability is ensured through
a dedicated NOC which provides network operations and services on 24x7x365
basis. PERN provides special services like dedicated R&E link, 1Gbps intranet
connectivity to each university/ institute, MPLS Layer3 VPN, MPLS Layer2 VPN
(VLL-PWE3), VPLS, IPv4 Multicast, IPv6 Multicast, Transit AS and also ordinary
services like Internet, IPv4, IPv6, Reverse DNS, Network Monitoring Services etc.
More about PERN can be found at www.pern.edu.pk.
PERN has its presence in the global consortium of research and education network
through TransEurasia Information Network since 2008. TEIN (Trans-Eurasia
Information Network) is a high speed network for research and education which
connects 20 countries in Asia and 34 countries in Europe. This network is actively
being used for international joint researches in cutting-edge areas, including
information telecommunications and bioengineering. TEIN*CC is established to
manage the 4th phase of the TEIN project. More about TEIN*CC can be found at
http://www.teincc.org. TEIN4 is supported by the European Commission and
covers 50% of the project costs. The remaining funds are provided by the partners
on the basis of a cost-sharing model. The workshop is funded by TEIN*CC through
the European Commission. To learn more about the European Commissions

PROJECT BACKGROUND
OF@TEIN Towards a OpenFlow-enabled Software Defined Networking
Infrastructure over TEIN project, is one of e-TEIN projects sponsored by Korean
Government via NIA (National Information Agency) and was officially launched in
July 2012. This OF@TEIN collaboration project is carried out by a consortium of
Korean universities and institutes and international collaboration sites, led by
Prof. JongWon Kim from Networked Computing Systems Laboratory, Gwangju
Institute of Science & Technology (GIST), Korea. In years 2012 and 2013, the main
target of OF@TEIN is to deploy OpenFlow-based SDN testbed infrastructure
among Korean and South-East Asian and South Asian collaborators over TEIN4.

The collaborators from South-East and South Asia are HUT @Hanoi, Vietnam; ASTI @Manila, Philippines;
Chulalongkorn University @Bangkok, Thailand; ITB @Bandung, Indonesia; University of Malaya @Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia; and PERN @ Islamabad, Pakistan. More specifically, in OF@TEIN research, we are newly
added to this network and want to extend the same facility to the interested universities in Pakistan.

Objective of Workshop
This workshop is designed for engineers and system staffs working at ISPs or large networks including academic
network, R&E network and enterprise network especially involved with system management, network
monitoring and management and problem response and troubleshooting. The workshop aims at,

Introduce the design, deployment and management of SmartX Rack technical details.
Share our best practices regarding research networks.
Troubleshooting of TEIN infrastructure problems.
Training the participants to utilize OF@TEIN SDN tools and scripts for their own experience.
Providing a forum for exchanging of research progress on software-defined networking.

Post Workshop Development Activity Plan

Using OF@TEIN for testing and research October 2015 till September 2016
Deployment of SmartX device at two to three universities till December 2016
New research collaboration project(s) between collaborators

Target Audience
Intended audience at this workshop will be the Network Engineers/Administrators, IT Managers from
universities/research organization all over Pakistan and from neighboring countries including Malaysia, Sri
Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
