Associations (SDBA) 2016 Annual Community
Investment Breakfast. Each year, we honor
an individual, a business owner(s), a corporation, an organization or its program, or government, for their leadership in key investments
in Southwest Detroit. Those investments may
be in a SW business venture that employs local
residents, in the social capital of our community or in major infrastructure projects that positively impact the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
Southwest Detroits Resurgence is here!
SDBA believes that each of us is responsible
for shaping the future of this amazing community. We are effective as we proceed inclusively. It is vision and individual leadership
that influences organizations and investment.
SDBA acknowledges these initiatives all year
long. However, once annually, we want to
bring them to your attention---as inspiration,
as motivation, as what connects us as human

Comunitaria 2016 de la Asociacin de Negocios del
Suroeste de Detroit (SDBA), por sus siglas en ingls).
Cada ao, honramos a un individuo, a propietarios de una
empresa, a una corporacin, a una organizacin o a su
programa, o al gobierno, por su liderazgo en inversiones
clave en el suroeste de Detroit. Estas inversiones pueden

social de nuestra comunidad o en grandes proyectos de

Matt Elliott, el Presidente del Mercado Regional,
manejan el programa en la regin del Medio
Oeste. Ese programa ha financiado para que
directores ejecutivos de organizaciones sin fines
de lucro y Lderes Emergentes en Detroit, se
reunan con sus contemporneos en comunidades a lo largo de todo el pas donde el Banco
de America lleva acabo actividades comerciales.
Esas experiencias de igual a igual son un componente clave del valor que Elliott y Douglas
ofrecen en el programa formal para cada beneficiario de la subvencin, adems de los dlares sin
restricciones para operaciones. El intercambio de
aprendizaje de profesional a profesional no tiene

Mara Salinas, Directora Ejecutiva del
Congreso de Comunidades, ha estado en las trincheras con la comunidad, y especficamente en
la Comunidad del Suroeste de Detroit, desde su
adolescencia. Mara tiene un compromiso con los
vecinos de la ciudad de Detroit, especialmente
sus hijos, y dentro de ese compromiso, ella se ha
comprometido personalmente a ser un ejemplo
para las mujeres jvenes en la comunidad con un
enfoque en la igualdad racial. Su mensaje y su
presentacin son de gran alcance, ya que suenan
como verdad para cada uno de nosotros.
La Presidenta de SEMCOG Kathleen
Lomako conoce planificacin, la poltica y el
perfil de cada comunidad que es parte de la
familia SEMCOG. Ella ha servido en esta organizacin de planeacin regional desde finales
de 1980. Las reglas y operaciones de SEMCOG
estn delicadamente equilibradas. Por ejemplo,
cada organismo gubernamental tiene derecho

a dos representantes, sin importar su tamao.
Lomako observ y escuch, observando cmo
su predecesor navegaba los temas difciles, as

tomando una posicin para asegurarse que la
voz de sus constituyentes fuera escuchada, y una
parte justa fuera justamente compartida. Es un
momento emocionante en la regin conocida como

El ingeniero de MDOT Tony Kratofil
trajo el Proyecto Gateway de $ 270 millones de
dlares, con conexiones directas entre el Puente

la Diversidad y Oportunidad en el Transporte. Y
ese compromiso se ha traspasado al proyecto M-1
Rail, el Distrito de Detroit, y en el plan de cada
proyecto. La gente de Detroit est dndole seguimiento a lo que significa mejorar!
Jos y Sandra Lpez, La familia Lpez

incluye a los paps Jos y Sandra, junto con sus
3 hijas y 1 hijo, todos entre las edades de 12 y 24
aos. Ellos han tenido su negocio en el Suroeste
de Detroit durante 16 aos, y son dueos del
maravilloso restaurante Mi Pueblo en la Avenida
Dix, el cual originalmente abri en una casa
de ladrillo, y ha sido agrandado por lo menos 5
veces. A pesar de estar en el centro de un desarrollo industrial grande, el establecimiento cuenta
con un pblico muy fiel, y siempre est lleno de
gente. El Kiosko, el centro para eventos al cruzar
la calle, es la ubicacin de muchas celebraciones
culturales, as como eventos de la comunidad.
Sandra Lpez, la matriarca de la familia, dijo,
que siempre ha sido el sueo de mi marido abrir
un restaurante. Nac en el barrio, y crec aqu,
asistiendo a la Preparatoria Holy Redeemer. El
vino aqu cuando tena 18 aos de edad. Sus
recuerdos favoritos del Suroeste de Detroit son
la gran diversidad de personas que conoci y con
las cuales convivi --- todas las culturas, y por
supuesto la comunidad hispana.
Motor City Match, administrado por
la Corporacin de Crecimiento Econmico de
Detroit, ha hecho de la ciudad un lugar mucho
ms navegable para pequeas empresas, emparejando a dueos de edificios con empresarios
interesados en rentar y vice-versa. A travs de
este programa muchos espacios comerciales han
pasado de vacos a negocios exitosos aadiendo al
crecimiento econmico y cultural en el Suroeste
Detroit.

Our Honorees: Getting to Know Them
Although you will find

the formal biographical
information about each
of the 2016 Community
Investment Southwest
Detroits Resurgence
Honorees, wed like to
include some historical
information that isnt part
of the formal record.
John A. James,
founder of James Group
International and
Renaissance Global
Logistics, got into the
trucking business at a
time when the Interstate
Commerce Commission
required that ones competitors in the business
recommend the authorization of a new trucking license. Clearly, not
always the most fair
process. John challenged
this federal regulation
all the way to the U.S.
Supreme Court that
indeed did rule in his
favor that the regulation
was an unfair restriction
of trade. In 1971, the
James Group opened for
business.
Lorron James, son
of the founder, along
with his brother, John
E. James, is taking the
business into the new
century. Following in his
dads footsteps, Lorron
has taken on a number
of civic and community
leadership roles. Among
these, is the Detroit
RiverFront Conservancys
Riviere28, a Detroit riverfront enthusiast organization dedicated to lifelong
support of the DRFC, by
hosting programs and
events on and in support
of the RiverWalk, the
Dequindre Cut, and associated parks, plazas and
green spaces. Lorron now
serves on the board of the
DRFC, and has accepted a
gubernatorial nomination
to the states financial
oversight of Detroit bankruptcy obligations.
Bank of America
has been cultivating community leadership across
the country for many
years. Senior VP, Tiffany
Douglas, and Regional
Market President Matt
Elliott run the program
in the Midwest region.
That program has funded
nonprofit CEOs and
Emerging Leaders in
Detroit, to meet with
their contemporaries in
communities across the
country where Bank of
America is does business.
Those peer to peer experiences are a key component of the value Elliott
and Douglas provide in
the formal program for
each grant recipient, in
addition to the unrestricted operating dollars.
Peer to peer learning is,
well, peerless! And take
the opportunity to see in
the video what the SDBA
has done with Bank of
Americas dollars.
Maria Salinas,
Executive Director of the
Congress of Communities,
has been in the trenches
with community, and
specifically the Southwest
Community, since her
teens. Maria has a commitment to the residents
of the city of Detroit,
especially its children,
and within that commitment, she is personally committed to be an
example to young women
in the community with
a focus on racial equality. Her message and her
presentation are powerful,
because they ring true for
each of us.
SEMCOG President
Kathleen Lomako
knows planning, politics
and the profile of each
community that is a part
of the SEMCOG family.
She has served with this
regional planning organization since the late
1980s. The rules and regs
or SEMCOGs operations
are delicately balanced.
For instance, each governmental body is entitled to
two representatives, no
matter its size. Lomako
watched and listened,
observing how her predecessor navigated the
tough issues as well as
elected officials efforts
and positioning to insure
the constituencys voice
was heard, and fair share
was fairly shared. It is an
exciting time in the region
known as Southeastern
Michigan. Detroit and
Southeastern Michigan
have mountains to move.

MDOT Engineer
Tony Kratofil brought
in the $270 million
Gateway Project, with
direct connects between
the Ambassador Bridge
and the multitude of freeways at Detroit international border crossing, on
time(early actually)and
within budget. For those
of you who can remember
that far back, there was

a complication or two
with the things the public
needed done, all of which
was eventually worked
through. One thing that
MDOT and Tony decided
to work toward going forward, was an increased
effort to engage the community where MDOT
was doing work, and to
insure that within federal
rules and regulations,
residents of the improvement area and contractors
in that area got a fair
chance at the jobs and
contracts that were a part
of that work. From that
commitment came the
Partnership for Diversity
and Opportunity in
Transportation. That
Partnership table now
includes (getting the list
from them tomorrow).
And that commitment has
been rolled into the M-1
Rail, the District Detroit,
and into every projects
thinking. Detroiters are
following through on what
it means to step up!
The Lopez Family
includes mom and dad
Jose and Sandra, along
with 3 daughters and 1
son, all between the ages
of 12 and 24 years. They
have been in business
in Southwest Detroit for
16 years, and own the
wonderful Mi Pueblo
Restaurant on Dix Ave.,
that began in a brick
home, and has continued

to expand at least 5 times.
Although right in the
center of major industrial
development, the establishment has a very loyal
following, and is always
crowded. El Kiosko, the
hall across the street, is
the location of many cultural celebrations as well
as community events.
Sandra Lopez, the matriarch of the family said,
it has always been my
husbands dream to open
a restaurant. I was born
in the neighborhood, and
grew up here, attending Holy Redeemer High
School. He came here
when he was 18 years
old. Her favorite memories of Southwest Detroit
are of the great diversity
of people she met and
lived with---all the cultures, and of course the
Hispanic community.
Motor City Match,
managed by the Detroit
Economic Growth
Corporation, has made
the city a much more
navigable place for small
business matching building owners to interested
tenants and vice-versa.
Through this program
many storefronts have
gone from vacant to thriving businesses adding
to the economic and cultural growth in Southwest
Detroit.

Corporation(LISC)stretches over two
square miles and impacts more than

five neighborhoods of Corktown, North

BSC work is being led by a selfselected Steering Committee of community stakeholders, assisted by a team of
professional planning consultants. Over
the past year, the Steering Committee
has put together a three to five year
Quality of Life Action Plan engaging
hundreds of local residents on multiple
occasions that focused on five themes:
Reconnecting Corktown
and Mexicantown
Improving Clark Park
Balancing new development in North Corktown
Creating vibrant business districts on Bagley,
Vernor and Michigan Ave.
Building cultural fusion,
through marketing, events
and working together
Building Sustainable
Communities will launch
its Quality of Life Plan in
June 2016, with collaborative implementation of plan
action items.

Motor City Match

Underway in a BIG Way
Looking for some stats? Here are the stats for Motor
City Match in Southwest Detroit. SDBA is currently
assisting property owners looking for tenants at 4430
W. Vernor, 2044 W. Vernor and 7830 W. Vernor.
SDBA is also currently working with business ventures Qualia Vecor Lab, DonShawn Tobacco, Chuggass
Bakery, Old World Style Almonds, Flowers of Vietnam,
Tiny tumblers and Cityscape.
Those who have succeeded in the Make a Match
awardee component are Huntington Bank, Mama Rita

Foods, Get Ready Building, PowerUp Juice Bar, Young
Nation, and 2030 Springwells.
Business Owners who found a home are Envios Express,

International Bridge is

and bike lanes could be a
part of the new span.
Minister of Infrastructure
and Communities,
Amarheet Sohi, told
reporters during a site
visit of the future customs
plaza on the Windsor
side that any amenities for non-motorized
bridge users would have
to come in consultation
with other stakeholders
and that security would

have to be considered in
any such decision.
The minister said one of
his first calls after getting the appointment last
month (Canada recently
had a change in government in Ottawa) was
to Michigan Gov. Rick
Snyder. The senior government in Canada is
setting goals on social and
economic development
impacts and on improving
the environment.

Cristo Rey Continues

High Achievement
Record
Graduation season is upon us

and Southwest Detroits very own
Detroit Cristo Rey High School celebrated their graduation ceremony
on June 5, 2016 at St. Annes
Church. This year, students completed their high school journey,
embarking onto
higher levels of
education. The
Detroit Cristo
Rey High School
graduating
seniors continued
the institutions
proud tradition
of a 100% college
acceptance rate. The institution
offers valuable experiences to better prepare students for life after
high school.
Detroit Cristo Rey ensures
students are well-prepared, both
academically and professionally,

by implementing a work study program. Students spend one day of
the school week working with hospitals, banks, and offices in Detroit.
This program allows students to
gain work experience before even
reaching college. Additionally, students can complete required community service hours through community events and projects, such
as the Merritt Street Clean-Up
and the Cadillac Urban Gardens.
Detroit Cristo Rey seniors will no
doubt continue their academic success throughout college.

in Southwest Detroit.
He attended Maybury
Elementary, Earhart
Middle School and
Western International
High school. Michael
mentioned many fond
memories such as walking down to the riverfront
with friends and family
as well as enjoying the
many carnivals in the
community. Michael reveled in the memories
of the rivalry between
Western and Holy
Redeemer High School.
He put all animosity
aside when mentioning
Holy Redeemer as not
only an institution, but
more importantly an
architectural and artistic
gem that we have in the
community, it is a beautiful church.
When looking back
on these memories,
Michael is proud to call
Southwest Detroit home
and establishes the
importance of giving back
to the community both
individually and through
the Southwest Detroit
Business Association as
Board President. My
mother, born and raised
in Mexico, was working with Latino Family
Services, so I started volunteering my time stated

stated the importance of successful business and quality of life in the community. The better they dothe
more opportunities for our community, the more visitors to our area, the more employment opportunities
for our teenagers and adults, and creating a wonderful community for folks to live and thrive. Michael
adds that SDBA looks past just business growth. We
are also looking how we can positively influence and
impact the local community. Michael highlights programs such as the bike lanes and street lights along
Vernor that are improving quality of life for the residents of Southwest Detroit.
When asked about any advice for business owners
in the community, Michael said If you are faced with
a challenge, reach out to SDBA. He wants business
owners to take advantage of the resources provided

in order to help grow businesses. Michael stated that
SDBA is a resource and we hope to continue to be for

Mercy Education Project, serving the educational needs of girls

in southwest Detroit, entered the
exciting arena of ROBOTICS last
fall by sponsoring one of only two
all-girls FIRST Robotics teams
in Michigan. Their team, Mercy
Midnight Storm won the 2016
Rookie All-Star Award for the
State of Michigan and represented
Michigan at the world finals in St.
Louis. The award is presented to
the rookie team that exemplifies
a young but strong partnership
effort and advances Firsts mis-
sion to inspire students to learn

more about science and technology. Mercy Education Project is
committed to increasing STEM
programming (science, technology,
engineering and math) within their
girls program.

on Land Contract
A Land Contract, like
any contract, is an agreement between two parties. A land contract is
an agreement between a
buyer and a seller for a
deed to the property.
Like a mortgage, a
Land Contract generally
involves a down payment
by the purchaser and a
monthly payment of the
purchase price plus interest. Normally, the purchaser will also pay for
insurance and taxes on
the property. The deed
to the property stays in
the name of the seller
until the Land Contract
has been paid off in full.
Moreover, the purchaser
has the free use and
enjoyment of the property
and must perform all
regular care and maintenance.
In these difficult economic times we are fac-
ing, numerous individuals

have lost their homes
due to foreclosure. Land
Contracts are a perfect
instrument for the purchase of a home for individuals who have poor or
damaged credit and do
not qualify for a mortgage. Both the buyer and
seller are free to negotiate terms of the contract
including the sale price,
monthly payment, interest, and duration of the
contract.
Land Contracts, like
any other legal instrument, should be examined by a competent real
estate attorney to insure
all parties rights are
protected. Although a
hand shake agreement
may seem attractive,
even the best intentioned
people have made serious
mistakes that they have
come to regret and should

In 1991, Dr. Shaun

and Wes Nethercott
wanted to build a theatre
company and produce
work that reflected issues
of community concern.
Over the years and with
the help of dedicated staff,
board, artists, and volunteers, Matrix Theater has
grown under their stewardship to become what it
is today.
This year, Matrix
Theatre Company celebrates its 25th anniversary. Over the course of
its history, some memorable productions include
Jesus in the Hood, Once
was Paradise, One Flew
Over the Cuckoos Nest,
and the most recent production Agua de Luna:
Psalms of the Rouge.

the lead role of Theresa
May. When asked the
importance of this play
and its connection to
Southwest Detroit, Myrna
stated It has been a
privilege to represent the
Southwest Detroit community as the 108 yearold Teresa May de Los
Angeles. What sets apart
Matrix from other theater
companies is that many
of their productions are
original works created out
of community members
stories.

they hope to influence the
community by empowering and inspiring people of

positive change in their
