Six Flags America may be facing a lawsuit over what
two women say are discriminatory hiring policies. Janet
Bello and Jackie Sherrill are crying foul because theme park
representatives allegedly said they could only work there if
they changed their dreadlocked hairstyle.
Bello said she went to the park to pick up an application
for employment and was told she could fill one out online.
Then she asked if there was anything that might prohibit her
employment. “A manager walked out from the back and told
me I could get a job as long as I was willing to change my
hair,” Bello said.
“I asked, ‘What do you mean by that? How can I change my
hair if this is the way God created me?’ That’s when he told me
I could cut it off or get a perm and make it straight.”
Bello said she asked for the written policy, which listed
dreadlocks under extreme hairstyles, along with Mohawks,
uneven haircuts and unnatural hair colors.
Sherrill told WJLA 7 in Washington, D.C., that she worked

Symposium Changes Focus of Mother’s Day New President

After a successful
symposium discussing the
challenges facing mothers
at the Ralph J. Bunche
International Affairs Center
on May 6 at Howard
University, many participants
say they’d like to attend
another event, particularly one
involving fathers.
Symposium attendees
cited inadequate maternity
leave laws, meagre resources
for sing-parent families and
expensive day care as some of
the problems facing mothers.
In addition, many said more
resources were needed to
assist immigrant families and
the children.
Harold Scott, director
of the Ralph J. Bunche
International Affairs Center,
discussed the increasingly
commercial nature of
Mother’s Day and said the
symposium was created to
increase awareness of serious
issues impacting women.
Scott added, “Next year, I
am bringing my mother.”
Although the event
targeted women, men were
not excluded.
“This is such a rich
experience,” said Rodney

few people on the Council that
we could count on.”

Wolf was the one acting on
partisan motives, asking if
his level of concern would
be the same if the incident
had occurred under President
Bush and taking issue with
his equation of this case to the
atrocities of the Jim Crow era.

we are pursuing this case so
narrowly,” said Commission

the lack of other reports of
intimidation by the NBPP in

“Education,” Orange said,
because it can be connected
to economic development,
which helps to create jobs.
“We have huge
unemployment, and then
the employers continue to
use the excuse that we don’t
have qualified individuals
for jobs,” he said. “We
have to make sure that we
are producing high school
graduates that have a diploma
of value and that our students
are either ready for college or
the workforce.”

A Word for Graduates: Let

It Shine

Julianne Malveaux — If you ever
attended a
National Council of Negro Women event, you
ended up singing “This Little Light of Mine”
at the end of the event. It was Dr. Dorothy
Irene Height’s favorite song, “This little light
of mine, I’m going to let it shine.”
The civil rights pioneer, Fannie Lou
Hamer, also loved to sing “This Little Light
of Mine,” and it is easy to see why. The song
encompasses humility and empowerment, the
recognition that each light is little, but that in
choosing to allow it to shine, to amplify, it can
be great. Dr. Maya Angelou wrote, “Fannie
Lou Hamer knew that she was one woman and
only one woman. However, she knew she was
an American and as an American she had a
light to shine on the darkness of racism. It was
a little light, but she aimed it directly at the
gloom of ignorance.”

In the weeks since Dr. Dorothy Height’s
death I have been thinking of the many ways
she let her light shine. She shone light on
issues of equal pay, workplace inequities,
global issues of gender inequity, health
disparities, and other issues. And by her very
presence she tackled racism, sexism, classism,
and ageism, refusing to be marginalized
because she was nearly one hundred years
old. She didn’t elbow her way to the table,
but in her dignity she insisted on space. By
just coming to work every day, well after the
retirement age of 65, she shone her light on
the capabilities of older Americans. She didn’t
just shine her light, she was incandescent.
This is a challenging time to claim light.
The unemployment rate, at 9.9 percent, is
up from last month. The African-American
unemployment rate is much higher, of course,
and a young person entering today’s job
market will face nothing but challenges.
Too many of our Bennett students, like
students from other colleges, step away
from graduation with uncertain plans. They
are waiting to hear about internships, jobs,
and graduate school possibilities. They are
shackled by an economy that has fewer jobs
available today than it did in 2003.
And yet, they have this little light, this
small thing that ignites them. For that,
they cannot allow circumstances diminish
that light, steal their joy, and dampen their
enthusiasm. The same tenacity and persistence

Commentary
Loan Guarantees Are Needed for Nuclear Power Plants — and Job Creation
Can government really
Emannuel K. Glakpe make a difference in creating
jobs? Based on the need for
federal loan guarantees to jump-start construction of new
nuclear power plants, the answer is: Without a doubt.
Given the high cost of building power plants, President
Obama has proposed using loan guarantees to reduce the
cost of private financing for construction of about a dozen
nuclear reactors. The government is also supporting other
improvements to the nation’s infrastructure – highways
and bridges, ports, levees, high-speed rail and electricity
transmission systems. But the need for clean energy to drive
our nation’s economic recovery is crucial. Without nuclear
power, we’re never going to get away from the use of polluting
fossil fuels.
Nuclear power is known as a job creator because it takes
more labor to develop and build a reactor than any other
energy technology.
Building and operating the first two waves of nuclear plants
– and supplying reactor components and equipment from U.S.
manufacturing companies – would create well over 100,000
good-paying jobs. But some members of Congress are balking
at approving the president’s plan, which would require tripling
the level of loan guarantees, from $8.5 billion to $54.5 billion.
Some conservatives worry about the impact that loan
guarantees might have on the budget deficit. But they
conveniently ignore the fact that nuclear utilities pay a
premium that reflects the financial risk assumed by the
government. Loan guarantees reduce the cost of obtaining
financing from Wall Street banks, saving utilities and
consumers millions of dollars.
And some liberals in Congress maintain the loan guarantees
should be used instead to further the development of renewable
energy sources. But despite all the hype over solar and wind
power, together they account for less than 5 percent of the
nation’s electricity capacity, and efforts to increase their use
have fallen considerably short of expectations. By contrast,
nuclear power currently provides almost 20 percent of the
nation’s electricity, safely and reliably.
Unlike solar panels and wind turbines, which only produce
electricity when the weather cooperates, nuclear plants over
the past decade have demonstrated their dependability by
generating electricity about 90 percent of the time. Wind
turbines, on average, produce electricity 30 percent of the time,
and solar thermal plants, 20 percent.
So far the administration has awarded loan guarantees for
construction of two nuclear plants in Georgia. Loan guarantees
are expected to be issued soon for one or two more plants,
most likely in Maryland and Texas. But many more nuclear
plants are needed to meet the growing demand for electricity.
The great advantage of nuclear power is that it doesn’t pollute
the air or emit greenhouse gases that are linked to global
warming. And nuclear power is a huge source of jobs and
revenue for local, state and federal government.
Take 2008: That year the nuclear industry purchased more
than $14 billion of materials, services and fuel from 22,500
companies throughout the United States – and those numbers
are expected to jump in the future.
The quantity of equipment and commodities needed for
the first eight U.S. nuclear plants to be built is staggering.
It includes more than 1,800 miles of cable, up to 24,000
nuclear-grade valves, 1,000 to 2,000 pumps, 30 to 150 miles
of nuclear-grade piping, and more than 3 million cubic yards
of concrete. Companies supplying those materials will need
additional workers.
The potential business from nuclear power is not limited to
the United States. Currently there are 40 nuclear plants under
construction around the world, and many more reactors are
planned. Among the countries that have announced plans to
build nuclear plants are Brazil, Argentina, Malaysia, Indonesia,
Vietnam, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
U.S. manufacturers see great potential in supplying countries
with steam generators, turbines, piping and other nuclear
components.
As if the need for more electricity to supply America’s
increasingly digital economy isn’t reason enough to build
additional nuclear plants, construction generates jobs, provides
an economic stimulus and is a key source of revenue for local,
state and federal government. It’s estimated that constructing
a nuclear plant requires about 1,800 jobs, plus 400 to 700
jobs during operation of the plant. These are well-paying jobs
for pipefitters, iron workers, welders, electricians and other
construction workers.
Moreover, construction of a nuclear plant produces
three times as many jobs in nearby communities – hotels,
restaurants, and services – and generates about $430 million a
year in economic activity as well as $40 million a year in labor
income.
Electric utilities are seeking licenses to build and operate
about 30 new nuclear plants. It’s estimated that construction
of 45 new plants – the number needed by 2030 to maintain
nuclear power’s 20 percent share of electricity generation –
would produce 350,000 jobs. Let’s get on with it.

Celebrating Women Beyond Mother’s Day
At the invitation of
George E. Curry Michael McMillan, I traveled
to St. Louis last week to
address the annual Salute to Women Leadership Awards
luncheon. For seven years, McMillan has been sponsoring this
extravagant event. The fact that a man would sponsor it and
have the temerity to invite another man to serve as the event’s
keynote speaker makes a significant public statement: It’s fine
for women to honor one another, but it’s equally important that
males honor and respect women.
Violent assaults on elderly women, rape, offensive rap
lyrics that refer to women as synonyms for female dogs and
garden tools, domestic violence and lack of basic manners
are all deeply rooted in male attitudes toward females. And
there’s no better way to change such negative attitudes than by
instilling in males, beginning at an early age, a respect for the
opposite sex. After all, they all have mothers, sisters, aunts,
grandmothers, girlfriends or wives whom they would like to
see respected by males.
McMillan is the license collector of St. Louis, but operates
his glowing tribute to women in his unofficial capacity. He is
unopposed in this year’s election and therefore is not seeking
any political gain from his decision to recognize successful
women or his other events to spotlight education and the plight
of poor people.

of Multicultural Relations at the University of Missouri-
St. Louis; Donna Wilkinson, a local fund-raiser and wife
of legendary University of Oklahoma football coach Budd
Wilkinson; Merdean Fielding-Gales, a prominent gospel music
leader and co-host of the “Bobby Jones Gospel Hour;” Debbie
Pyzyk, a realtor with offices in eight states; Carol Daniel, a
local TV host; Pat Shannon-VanMatre, a St. Louis restaurant
owner; Cheryl D. Polk, a United Way official; Alderwoman
Marlene E. Davis; Comptroller Darlene Green; Thelma E.
Steward, a registered nurse and tireless civic volunteer; Lois
D. Conley, an expert on African-American history; Sister Mary
Jean Ryan, CEO of SSM Health Care and educator Johnetta
R. Haley, the first female president of a Southern Illinois
University campus.
Each honoree received 32 gifts, including a dozen roses,
monogrammed chocolates, wine, champagne, a designer
hat, a custom-designed necklace, a field pass to a St. Louis
Rams football game with access to the owner’s suite; a mink
monogrammed draw string purse, a Neiman Marcus gift set,
free use of the Cabanne House in Forest Park and a White
House pen set and tote bag.
I speak at events around the country, but I’ve never
attended one that comes close to matching this one. As elegant
as this event was, we cannot lose sight of Michael McMillan’s
original vision, which was to honor women.
Society can’t be reminded enough that African-American
women carry the dual burden of being Black and being female,
earning less than all males and White women. Despite passage
of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, White females earn 73.5 percent
of what White males are paid; Black males earn 72.1 percent;
followed by Black women at 63.6 percent or less than a third
of the pay of White men; Latino men receive 57.5 percent and
Latino women, 51.7 percent.
Black girls suffering from poor self-images would benefit
from seeing successful women like those honored in St. Lois.
We all know about the ground-breaking experiment that
Kenneth B. Clark and his wife, Mamie, conducted in 1939.
They administered a doll test to African-American kids, ages
6-9, showing them dolls that were identical in respect except
color. Most of the children picked the White doll as being
nicer than the Black doll. The couple’s research was used in
the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court
decision.
In 2005, Kiri Davis repeated the doll experiment with
children in Harlem. Although she used a small sample, 71
percent of the children said the White doll was nicer. In 2009,
when Barack Obama was inaugurated as president, ABC-
TV conducted a similar test, this time altering the question
to: Which doll is pretty? In that test, 47 percent of the girls
described the White doll as the pretty one.
Clearly, there is plenty of work to be done among both girls
and boys. Perhaps in our various manhood training and rites
of passage programs, we should add a component that focuses
on respect toward females. Organizations such as 100 Black
Men should also host programs that honor the hundreds of
females in their local community. It’s not enough for women to
honor women. It’s time that men break the gender barrier and
realize how all of us benefit from women being honored and
respected.

NBA – led by the man that
many deem the top player in
the league – has, again, fallen
short of their goal to win a
championship. The Cleveland
Cavaliers may have won an
impressive 60-plus games
during the regular season,
but after losing the Eastern
Conference semifinals to the
Boston Celtics, many critics
believe Cavs superstar LeBron
James should leave his home
state of Ohio and venture
off to another franchise if he
wishes to finally win a title.
Read below as AFRO

whether or not “King James”
should give up on Cleveland.
Riley: Save the sob stories
and city allegiance, it’s time
for LeBron to bounce. He’s
given Cleveland seven of the
city’s arguably best years in
its basketball history. You look
at Cleveland’s roster up and
down and you see a bunch of
guys who can’t finish layups,
convert open threes or make
clutch baskets on a regular
basis and when it counts in the
playoffs.
The Cavs’ second and
third best players –Anderson
Varejao and Delonte West–
wouldn’t start for any of the
remaining playoff teams and
let’s not get started on Cavs
head coach Mike Brown.

Green: There’s no
reason LeBron should leave
Cleveland.
The legacy of King James
is and always will be tied to
his home state. The greatest
of the greats in NBA history
didn’t leave town to win
their championships, and I
don’t think LeBron wants
to leave either. It all comes
down to how he wants to be
remembered.
Will LeBron’s legacy
mimic the likes of Michael
Jordan and Kobe Bryant, or
will his career reflect less
greats like Kevin Garnett and
Shaquille O’Neal? All four
players are Hall-of-Fame-
worthy (as James is already)
but MJ and Kobe are argued
as the greatest of all time
(GOAT), while Garnett and
O’Neal are merely mentioned
among the best.
Riley: O’Neal and
Garnett’s accomplishments
aren’t frowned upon
because they left town to
win elsewhere but because
big men hardly get any love
around NBA circles. It’s the
guards that garner the titles of
the NBA’s best ever because
they’re just the more exciting
specimens to watch. Do you
know how many times Tim
Duncan ousted Kobe in the
playoffs? Or can you explain
why Magic Johnson, Larry
Bird and Jordan always seem
to receive more praise than
Bill Russell’s 11 titles?

But that’s beside the point.
James leaving Cleveland
would probably have an even
greater impact on his legacy
than if he stays. If he goes to
New York or Chicago, he has
a chance to revive two historic
basketball franchises that
haven’t won anything in quite
LeBron James
some time, especially New
York. If he goes to New Jersey
(where I think he should)
then he would help elevate
that team to unforeseen
heights, especially once the
club moves to Brooklyn in
two years. And if he does
all of this while Cleveland
falls back off the face of the
NBA map then it will only
prove his worth. The thought
of Cleveland even winning
45 games let alone over 60
as they’ve done in the past
two seasons was unheard of
before James arrived, and will
resume once/if James leaves.
Green: Tim Duncan is
considered by most basketball
experts as the greatest power
forward to ever play the game,

and Bill Russell easily takes

to ever play. Why are Duncan
and Russell’s legacies deemed
greater than KG’s and Shaq’s?
Certainly the amount of
championships won between
Duncan and Russell (15)
is the primary determining
factor, but let’s not ignore
how both players won their
titles with the same team
throughout their careers.
I also won’t ignore how
Garnett’s legacy would have
been even greater had he
brought a championship to his
original team, the Minnesota
Timberwolves. LeBron should
use Garnett as a learning
example and make sure his
front office doesn’t make the
same mistakes Minnesota
made.
Riley: Duncan and
Russell’s legacies are deemed
greater than KG’s and Shaq’s
because they won more titles,
plain and simple, not because
they didn’t relocate. It didn’t
take long for San Antonio,
Los Angeles and Boston
to surround their stars with
talent once they got a hold
of them. It’s taken Cleveland
seven years to surround James
with Jamario Moon, Anthony
Parker, Boobie Gibson and a
near 40-year-old O’Neal. And
the one chance they did have
at landing a marquee talent,
they balked. Cleveland’s front
office had a deal on the table
in February to land Amar’e
Stoudemire but elected to
trade for Antawn Jamison
because they didn’t want to
relinquish J.J. Hickson to
the Suns. How did that pay
off? Hickson totaled nine
minutes and zero points in
Cleveland’s last three playoff
games while Jamison netted
14 points of 6-of-20 shooting
in the Cavs’ last two games.
As for Stoudemire, well, he’s
been a beast while giving out
dunk facials and averaging

over 20 a game so far this post
season. Get out while you can
LeBron, this coaching staff
and front office will be the
reason why you’ll never win
in Cleveland.
Green: I’d be insane to
even attempt to argue that the
Cavaliers’ front office didn’t
drop the ball on the potential
Stoudemire trade. There’s no
doubt the presence of a star
talent such as Stoudemire
would have made a greater
difference in the Cavs’
success this postseason.
Instead, LeBron had to rely
on a 33-year-old former
All-Star past his prime in
Antawn Jamison who can’t
defend the elite big men of
the NBA and struggled on
offense throughout most of the
semifinals against Boston.
But even with that said,
part of the reason Mike and
Kobe are thought of as GOATs
is because they stayed with
one team and took that team
to multiple championships.
LeBron is simply one more
star player away from
bringing Cleveland an NBA
title and the summer of 2010
will be a feeding frenzy for
teams looking to sign a high-
profile free agent. If I’m
LeBron, I’d demand that the
Cavs front office make a huge
splash this offseason.

‘Just Wright’ Mixes Love, Basketball in
Sentimental Sitcom

How do you make a movie
that feels totally fresh despite
the fact that it follows a fairly
transparent blueprint for a
romantic comedy formula?
Ask Sanaa Hamri, for not only
did she first achieve this same
feat back in 2006 with her
tears as the closing credits roll,
even though there’s never a
doubt about how it will all end.
The picture stars Queen
Latifah as Leslie Wright, a
physical therapist and lifelong
New Jersey Nets fan. She’s
obsessed with the team
because she was taken to their
basketball games as a child by
her father (James Pickens Jr.)
jeans and a Nets jersey.
And while her dad has
no problems with the casual
attire, the unflattering look
simply doesn’t sit well with
her mother (Pam Grier) who’s
concerned about whether
her daughter will ever get
married. Meanwhile, the
same can’t be said about
Leslie’s gorgeous godsister,
Morgan (Paula Patton). This
shameless gold-digger could
care less about the NBA,
ends up turning his head
at the soiree, and it’s not
long before she has a gaudy
engagement ring on her
finger. The plot triangulates
when Scott suffers a career-
threatening knee injury on the
court and needs months of
rehabilitation. Re-enter Leslie,
the only female therapist

to trust not to try to sabotage
her impending wedding which
she sees as a big payday.

adult fiction and poetry author—believes it offers men a
special opportunity to glimpse into women’s most personal
conversations.
“The whole play centers [on] the kitchen table and
when women gather around it, it becomes an altar in which
they lay their deepest concerns,” Price-Lindsay said. “With

partake in these sacred rituals, they can be the proverbial
‘fly on the wall’ and gain some insight on what women
