Member of the month
Shri. MPR Nair
Navaneetham Member of the month is Shri. MPR Nairji. Please see his detail profile at the end of
this issue.

Shri Nairji is a very active and long time member of our group. I am really honored to learn more
about him.

Nairji is another good example of a role model to all of us. Someone who lived long years outside
of Kerala in a faraway land like Texas in US and still being strongly attached to Guruvayoorappan
and continuing bhakthi margam strongly and admirably.

It is my pleasure and privilege to introduce details of his life to you and I thank him for being kind
enough to share his personal story with all of us.

My humble pranams to Shri Nairji and his family. I thank him for his utmost support for our group
and being a constant contributer of great articles to Navaneetham.

Praying to Guruvayoorappan for Ayurarogyasoukhyam to him and family!!

Samastha Loka Sukhino Bhavanthu” - May all living beings in all worlds be happy.

Yaathra
Chandrasekharan Menon.
I had conceived the theme of this article in Malayalam, but thought of writing in English and
delivering for posting in our Navaneetham since my
Guruji Sarojaji cannot read Malayalam.

Yaathra is generally understood as a travel or more

precisely a journey. Our life itself is a Yaathra and in
Malayalam it is said that “chotta muthal chudala
vare” (െചാU മ7 തല് ച7 ടല വെര) meaning from “womb”
to the “tomb”. We all are “born” naked and when
“dead” the physical remains are “cremated” or buried
“naked”. This “naked” truth that we are born with
“nothing” in our hand and when dead do not take
anything with us is conveniently ignored or forgotten
as we grow in this world that is surrounded fully by
“maya” or illusion. As a child, he/she “cry” to get what
they want. As they grow up they give up crying but
make others “cry”. In old age people again “cry”
yearning for mukthi or “salvation” from this “Samsara”.
We have to do our "duty" all along this “yaathra” so
that at-least some will remember our good deeds.

Death itself is not the end of the life. In fact “life” is without any beginning or ending. It is a
continuous cyclic process. Life as we know is only possible in this planet called Earth which itself
is one of the five elements necessary for life. The others are space, air, fire and water. There is
“life” in each of these elements, but without the presence of Earth there cannot be a physical
form. The earth itself is full of “maya” or illusion. What we see is its plane surface with mountains
and valleys, but in fact it is a “globe” or round in shape. We feel it is “stationary” but it rotates on its
own and goes around the “Sun” taking everything with it. This is the "prapanjam" (?പ‰ം)
or Universe known to us. How many other Universes exist we humans do not know. Such is the
“creator’s” or God’s nature that it is beyond the ability to conceive and comprehend by ordinary
“humans”.

Of all the creations of God, Human form is the greatest and highest in the order. It also include a
“package” bestowed upon from the accrued “karmaphala” or the result of the previous life of the
“Soul”. God (“paramaaathma”) uses HIS discretion not only to create a "body" and deposit the
“soul” inside that “body” but also decides the “parents” to whom that body becomes a “child”. It is
each one’s “fortune” to get good children or good parents. Our own “body” or “Kshethram” is
divine by itself as this is “given” by HIM to use as a tool to cross this two terminals between “birth”
and "death". Any minor cuts and bruises the body cures by its own metabolism. The “soul” or
“Kshethrajnan” is always shadowed by HIM as “paramaaathma” to guide and protect without the
knowledge of the “soul”.

Along with the body the “package” carries other “bonuses” of such unwanted ‘senses’ like “kama,
krodha, lobha, dambha, madha, maatsarya” and a wicked and “flickering” mind that is never

Monthly Newsletter of Guruvayoor Devotees Forum
“satisfied” with what one has, but supplemented with a “quality” “wisdom” with which one can
distinguish good and bad things. The child picks up some qualities first from their “parents” then
later from the surroundings. Depending on the “merits” or “demerits” of the previous life, the child
becomes a “prodigy” or an ordinary or below ordinary one in its early life. The surroundings and
company also play an important role in developing the “character” of the child in later years. "Sath
sangam" and reading Bhagavath Geetha, understanding and practising its principle in one's life
will benefit one and all.

If we lead our life within the “norm” of “dharmic way” called “sanaathana dharma” as provided by
Great rishis in their scripts, our life (this yaathra) will be blessed and either “upgraded” or the
"soul" merged with HIM avoiding the cycle of birth and death. Until then we are all “vazhipOkker”
or “yaathrakkaar” (travelers) and have to continue this journey.

On this note I submit this article of “yaathra” for publication in our Navaneetham which has
completed 4 years and starting 5th year with this Vishu. I would like to thank our Sunil Menon for
his devotion in publishing this "Navaneetham" or "Freshly churned butter" every month without fail
in spite of his busy life and other schedules and pray Lord Guruvayoorappan to bless him and his
family for the sake of this wonderful web world of Guruvayoor and its members.

Wishing all Gurudevs a blissful life through out and praying Lord Guruvayoorappan for HIS
blessings to all for that “Bliss”.

Tulabharam
The story of Thulabharam is an incident from Krishna's life, that reveals the extent to which
humble devotion is worth more than material wealth.
Satyabhama, wife of Krishna, prides herself about the love
Krishna has for her and her grasp over his heart. Rukmini, on
the other hand is a devoted wife, humble in her service of her
Lord. Her devotion is her real inner beauty. On one contrived
occasion, the sage Narada arrived in Dwaraka and in the
course of conversation hinted to Satyabhama that the love
that Krishna exhibits towards her is not all that real and in
fact it is Rukmini who has real control over his heart. Unable
to bear this, Satyabhama challenges Narada to prove it.
Narada, with his way with words, tricked her into accepting a
Vrata where she has to give Krishna away in charity to
Narada and reclaim him by giving the weight of Krishna in
wealth. Narada lures her into accepting this vrata by telling
her that Krishna ’s love to her will increase many folds if she
succeeds in performing this Tulabharam. He also instigates
her ego by hinting that her wealth may not be sufficient to
equal the weight of Krishna . With Satyabhama's ego duly
raised, she tells Narada that she can mobilize so much wealth
that it is a child’s play for her to outweigh Krishna . Narada
warns her that if she is not able to do this, Krishna will
become his slave to be done with as he pleases.

The scene is soon set for the vrata. Satyabhama gives

Krishna away in charity in spite of the other wives’ pleadings. Krishna , always the mischievous cowherd,
meekly submits to this drama. After donating Krishna to Narada, Satyabhama arranges for a big scale to be put
up and sends with all assurance for her huge treasure of gold and jewellery. All that she has is soon put on the
scale, but it doesn’t budge. Narada starts taunting her and threatening her that if she can’t put enough gold or
diamonds, he will be forced to auction Krishna as a slave to someone else. Satyabhama, in frantic panic,
swallows her pride and begs all the other wives to give their jewels. They agree out of love for Krishna but
alas, it is of no use.

Krishna remains a mute witness to all this drama and rubs salt into the open wounds of Satyabhama’s ego that
he has now to become a slave to some cowherd and will have to suffer the separation from his dear wife.
Narada suggests to Satyabhama that Rukmini may be able to get her out of the predicament. She finally
swallows her pride and appeals to the devoted first wife of Krishna . Rukmini comes and with a prayer to her
husband puts a single leaf of the sacred Tulasi on the scale ( tula ). The scales then become all at once so heavy
that even after removing all the jewels, the scales are weighed down on the side of the Tulasi leaf.

The importance of 'knowledge'

Balagopal Ramakrishnan

Bhagavan consistently reminded in 'Gita' the importance of 'knowledge'. Probably the

popular verse below explains it why.

na chorahaaryaM
It cannot be stolen by thieves,
na cha raajahaaryaM
Nor can it be taken away by kings.
na bhraatR^ibhaajyaM
It cannot be divided among brothers
na cha bhaarakaari |
It does not cause a load on your shoulders.
vyaye kR^ite
If spent..

SHATPADHEESTHOTHRAM BY SANKARACHARYA
DR. SAROJA RAMANUJAM, M.A., PH.D, SIROMANI IN SANSKRIT.

1.avinayam apanaya vishNo dhamaya manaH Samaya vishayamrgathrshNaam

bhoothadhayaam visthaaraya thaaraya samsaarasagarathaH

Oh Lord Vishnu, remove my pride, tame my mind and quell the desire for the mirage of
sensual pleasures. Spread my sympathy towards all beings and make me cross the sea
of samsara.

Sankara prays to Lord Vishnu in this sloka for purity of mind. The saints and sages do
not have to pray for tranquility of mind as they are realised sould but they do this for our
sake so that we can recite the sthothras composed by them and get benefited. It is like
Thyagaraja praying to Rama to remove his sins etc. he was a pure soul and had
committed no sin but it was for the benefit of people like us who by singing them, or even
by reading them, will be purified of our imperfections.

In this sloka Sankara asks for the removal, apanayana of pride, avinayam, that is ego,
and tame, dhamaya, the mind which is uncontrollable as Arjuna puts it in Bhagavatgita,
chanchalam hi manaH krshNa pramaaThi balavath dhrDam, that the mind is fickle,
agitated strong and obstinate.(BG.6.24) Hence it could be tamed only through the grace
of the Lord.

This can be achieved only by quelling, Samaya, the desires which leads one to the
sesnsual pleasures only to find that they are like mirage, mrgathrshNaa and prove false.
This is also possible only by turning the mind towards the Lord and this attitude also
comes only through His grace.

Next sankara insists on having sympathy towards all beings, bhoothadhayaa, as they are
only manifestations of the Lord. These tranformatoions would make one cross the
samsara and for this, the Lord is prayed for, thaaraya samsaaraath.

2. dhivyaDhuneemakarandhe parimalaparibhoga sacchidhaanandhe

Sreepathipadhaaravindhe bhavbhaya khedha cChidhe vandhe

I bow down to the lotus feet of Sreepathi which contains the honey of the Ganges that
flows in heaven, is fragrant and gives all enjoyments, which is existence knowledge and
bliss and which destroys the fear of samsara,

The lotus, the feet of the Lord, the consort of Lakshmi, has the fragrance of sath chit and
aanandha, existence , knowledge and bliss. It has the honey in its pollen in the form of
the divine river Ganges. The pair of feet , the two lotuses, remove the fear of samsara.

Geeta Dhyanam

|| Om Namo Narayanaya ||
In this piece we will look more in-depth at two aspects previously mentioned in sloka 4.38. Krishna talks about the
“purifying aspect of Knowledge” and the “perfection in Yoga or the complete mastery over one self”.
Krishna says,

Na hi jnAnena sadrisham pavitram iha vidyate;

Tat swayam yogasamsiddhah kAlenAtmani vindati || 4.38 ||

There is nothing as purifying as knowledge (Na hi jnAnena sadrisham pavitram iha vidyate), says Krishna.
Knowledge is release, salavation, Knowledge is that which bestows ultimate bliss. It is all purifying. The question is -
what is it that it is purifying?

What is that impurity that needs to be driven out of our systems?

Jealousy, anger, competitiveness, lust, all driven by desire, are the impurities that we need to worry about. The grass is
always green on the other side. What is not ours is always more attractive than what we already have. And we are
never satisfied – the one who does not achieve his/her ambition is unhappy because he/she has failed; the one who
achieves his/her ambition is unhappy because now he/she has started aspiring for and planning and working towards
something else [or maybe the fact that there is nothing more to achieve and life has become empty, devoid of
‘meaning’ is even more disturbing]. The one common analogy for the mind is the pendulum of a clock – always
swinging, ceaselessly from left to right and back*. Never at rest, never satisfied, always fluctuating between desires.
Swami Vivekanand referred to our minds as being in a state similar to that of a monkey who is drunk, gets stung by
bees, and is possessed by a demon.
However, once Knowledge dawns, then that is the end of all desires. We move from being mere puppets and slaves to
our desires to being masters of our minds. Knowledge purifies, drives out all passions and in its place is a sense of
absolute peace. In that state, the mind is always steady – then whatever happens is looked upon with equanimity.
Everything is Bhagwan’s prasadam, everything is God’s will. Only today, only the now matters; the past is past and the
future is in the future. What is important is living in the present moment; not even later in the day, but in the here and
now.

The second aspect that Krishna emphasises is “perfection in Yoga” (Tat swayam yogasamsiddhah)- the complete

mastery over one-self; what is the indication that one has gained complete mastery over one self? To gain control over
ones senses and not be swayed by the situation, not to react. To be balanced under all circumstances. *There is an
interesting story regarding a young man who aspired to be a monk and approached the Buddha. It is said that this
young man hailed from a royal family, used to be an accomplished musician, and played the veena beautifully. But
when he entered the monastery, he seemed to undergo a dramatic change of habits – he walked barefoot, slept on the
ground, ate very little and that too once in two days, and practised severe austerities. Needless to say he was soon
reduced to a skeleton and a shadow of his former self; some of his fellow monks approached the Buddha and
expressed their concern. They said that this is a guy whose barefeet rarely touched the ground, whose skin has never
known anything but the softest clothing, the air in his palace was always perfumed etc. What is wrong with him? The
Buddha smiled and said – nothing wrong; he is naturally now going to the other extreme. He lived life in an extreme
condition before – the extremity was one of luxury and affluence. So now he is attracted to the other extreme – self-
denial and austerity. The Buddha then sought out the young man and asked him – ‘I have heard that you play the veena
very well; so tell me - if the strings of the veena are slack can you create music?’. The young man was surprised and
said how is that possible? You are wise, you should know that its not possible to create music if the strings are slack.
Then, said the Buddha, what happens if the strings are taut? The young man replied, that will also not do;the strings
have to be tightened just to the right extent- not too tight, not too slack, just the right balance. So, the Buddha said, I
came to tell you something, but you are intelligent and can figure out for yourself – if for creating music with the
veena there is some rule regarding the strings, then there are also rules in place so that music may spring forth from
this life. Drop the extremes, pursue the middle course.*
Krishna says that one who gains mastery over self, is balanced in all respects, has purified his mind, such a
person realizes the Self.
(to be continued..)

“True and sincere surrender unto the Lord is the essence of Bhakti (God-love). ‘I am Thine, All is Thine. Thy Will be done, my Lord’ – This is
the best Sharanaagathi Mantra or prayer of self-surrender. Seek His will. Do His will. Surrender to His will. You will become one with the
Cosmic Will.” ...Swami Sivananda.

BHAGAVAN SHRI SATHYA SAI BABA’S DISCOURSES

A respectful compilation from the series of postings by Dr. BGY Sastry

( drbgysastry@yahoo.com )

13 - A spiritual aspirant should have…

A certain spiritual aspirant went to a sage and asked him to give him a mantra. The sage said that he
would impart the message only if the disciple agreed to serve him for twelve years, carrying out all his
injunctions. The disciple agreed and carried out his services to the preceptor with devotion for twelve
years. At the end of the period, when the sage felt that his own end was approaching, he asked the
disciple to bring a Palmyra leaf on which he would inscribe the mantra before his death. The disciple
went in search of a Palmyra leaf, but before he could return, the preceptor died. On enquiry from a boy
who was there, he learnt that before dying, the sage had written something on a bed of sand, which a
woman had copied and then wiped off the inscription. The disciple went in search of the woman, who
was having some donkeys. He learnt from her that she had inscribed on the palm leaf roll that she wore
in her ear-lobe what she found on the sand. When she learnt from the young man that the writing on
the sand was a mantra intended for him and for which he had served the sage faithfully for twelve
years, the woman said that she would give him the palm leaf only if he served her dutifully for twelve
years. The disciple who was determined to get the mantra at any cost, agreed to serve her.

The young man looked after the donkeys and served the woman for many years, living upon the food
given by her. One day, he could not get the food from her and went about in search of food. At that
time, he learnt that the king of the region had been feeding the poor for a long time and that he might
be able to get food if he went to the feeding place. On going there he learnt that the king had stopped
the feeding from that day because it did not yield the result he was expecting from it. The king had
started poor feeding on the advice of his preceptor who had told him that he would have a son if a truly
godly man ate the food that he would serve to the poor. A bell was kept in the palace and when it rang
by itself that would be the sign that a godly man had partaken of the king's food. As the feeding had
gone on for long without the bell ringing, the king decided to stop the feeding.

That was the very day when the young disciple went to the feeding place. On learning that all the
vessels used for cooking the food had been sent to the river for cleaning, the young man hastened to
the river bank to find out whether some food scraped from the vessels would be available for him. He
found some crumbs at the spot and started eating them. At that very moment the bell in the palace
started ringing.
The king was startled to hear the bell and immediately sent out messengers to find out who was the
person who had eaten the food that day which made the bell ring. After enquiries, the messengers
traced the young man at the river and brought him to the king. The king was overjoyed on seeing the
young man because he felt that he would soon have a son. He offered the young man half his kingdom
and invited him to stay with him. The young man told the king his whole story and said that he was not
interested in the kingdom or anything else, but only in the mantra from his guru, which was now in the
keeping of the woman with the donkeys. The young man insisted that the palm leaf ear-ring worn by
the woman should be obtained without any compulsions.

Monthly Newsletter of Guruvayoor Devotees Forum
The king sent out men to trace the woman, who was brought before him. Learning that she was an
acrobat, who could perform feats on a rope, the king asked her to demonstrate her skill before the
queen who was now enceinte. As she was dancing on the rope, he asked her whether she could catch
two diamond ear-rings he would throw at her and wear them while dancing on the rope. She readily
agreed. Catching them in her hands, she took out the palm leaf rings from her ear-lobes, cast them
down and wore the diamond ear-rings in their place.

As the palm leaf rings dropped down, the young man rushed towards them and eagerly read the
message inscribed there in. Immediately after reading the mantra the young man secured instant
illumination and liberation thereafter.

A spiritual aspirant should have such determination and preparedness for any kind of sacrifice to
achieve his goal.

Navaneetham Member of the Month

Shri. MPR Nair.

OHM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VASUDEVAYA.
I am really honored to be chosen as member of the month in our precious Magazine,
‘Navaneetham’, but I find it a bit daunting when asked to write a little about myself, especially in
front of my great Gurudevs of our esteemed Group.

I am the first of five siblings of a family hailing from Kerala. Our ‘Tharavadu’ was known as
‘Mangalathu’. I remember my grandfather telling that our forefathers were known as ‘Mangalathu
Aasanmar’ (teachers) of the erstwhile Travancore palace. Neither my grandfather nor my father
was a teacher. However my father’s younger brother, Vidwan P.G.K Nair, was a teacher in High
School. He had written many books in prose and verse. I carried quill-pen and ink-bottle to
school, and grew up in a traditional Hindu family.

My father was my first Guru. He was known as ’Kaniasam Parameswaran Pillai’, in the
Postal Service, on account of his worship and dedication to work. I have endeavored to follow his
good name as much as possible. He was a man whose success was defined by his principles,
universal love, affection to the family and his piety. Amma was also really one step forward. They
brought up us with love and affection. My siblings are also well of and are all fine now, by God’s
Grace.

Our Tutelary Deity is ‘Kavalayil Bhagavathy.’
The temple was very close to our home and we used
to visit the temple almost every day. We have strong
faith in our ‘Kula Devatha’. My father inculcated
devotion to God in me. He also taught me some
preliminaries of Astrology as well. Amma helped me
much in my studies and in shaping my handwriting.

As a child I was more attracted to Krishna than to

any other Gods. His beautiful Idol in our small pooja
room, with the flute in His hands, His ‘neela
kalebaram’ clad in ‘peethambaram’ and adorned with
golden ornaments, and the glowing crown carrying the colorful pea-cock feather, and that
indelible effulgence of His face, always enamored me. Whenever I was sad, He invariably came
in my dream and consoled me with the sweetest words. I remember Him playing with me,
running through the yard full of Tulasi and other plants with fragrant flowers, around our home.
One day while running after Him, I fell and hit my forehead on a piece of rock thus bruising the
right corner of my right eye-brow. He applied some
medicine and bandaged my wound. It soon healed
miraculously. I did fall later and hurt myself at the
same spot, and still continue to carry the scar.
When I told my friends about this dream, they
mocked at me saying, ‘Krishnante kalithozhan
vannirikkunnu! I really felt only proud.
On another occasion in my youth, I was
very desperate because I didn’t get a job in spite of
my strenuous effort to find out one. Every
acquaintance I saw, asked me why I was not getting a job though I was a graduate. Being in a
small village, people were under the impression that graduation is like a guaranteed license for a
job.
Hearing this repeatedly from even very close ones, I almost reached the stage of thinking
why I did not end my life. I could not sleep that night and I shed tears in front of my Lord. I did not
know when I closed my eyes, but He came and consoled me, ‘Don’t worry; the Post-man will
bring your appointment order today’. I got it exactly on that day, as L.D. Clerk, in Marine
Department in Alleppey, my first appointment order. My joy knew no bounds. I fell flat and
embraced the Lotus Feet of my Lord, in our pooja room. Tears rolled down from my eyes. I

closed the door and cried aloud in joy, to my heart’s content.
There were so many such instances in my life. Yet on another occasion, around
my my 37, I felt the warmth of my Lord again. We were visiting Guruvayoor, my wife and our two
children. As usual there was very heavy rush at
the temple. After ‘Darshan’ we went for little
shopping. While entering the shop, we found that
Jeevan, our son, around 5, is missing. My wife
almost went unconscious. I tried to gather my
courage, and unknowing called out in loud voice,
‘Krishna, Guruvayoorappa’. I do not exactly
remember now, the hubbub took place there. But,
to our surprise, somebody brought him on the
spot and disappeared. We went again inside to
express our deepest gratitude. I think my devotion
to Lord Sree Guruvayoorappan that developed
later might have had its origin in my childhood. I
am sad that those good old childhood days were gone:

“Bhuvanathinu modi koottuma sukha kalangalumorppathundu njan,

Ava durvidhi thante dhoorthezhum mukha hasangal kanakke majnathum”
I used to treat other people with great respect, even when I was young and in
service I respected my subordinates. Amidst the morning- prayer in our primary School, we were
taught to sing:

“Karunyalaya deva deva bhagaval karunyamibbalaril thonnenam-

Gurubhakthi bhoothadayayum sathyam sadacharavum,
Param neethiyumaarilum vinayavum bhoomeendranil bhakthiyum-
Veroonnichu valarthanam, karunayam varsham pozhicheppozhum”.,
meaning, Oh! God, kindly shower the rain of your mercy on us your children, to develop deep
rooted respect within us towards our teachers, kindness towards other beings, truthfulness, good
conduct and habits, righteousness, humility towards all, and faithfulness and devotion to the
King. From childhood, the above prayer has helped me imbibe humility. People belonging to
different religions lived around our home in my small village. We mutually loved and respected
each other. The temple, the mosque and the church were all within a square mile or so. I
remember in all festivals like our Meenabharani Mahotsavam, their Valiya Perunal,
Chandanakkudam etc., we participated with mutual contribution and helped according to each

one’s ability. The mingling of people is seen in large numbers at the time of fire-works connected
with special festivals in all these ‘Devalayas’.
Now I try to relish and understand the intent and purport of the golden words in Vese 72 of
Chapter 6 of Maha Upanishad:

“Ayam bandhurayam neti, ganana lakhu chethasam,

Udara charithanamthu, ‘Vsudhaiva Kutumbalam”, meaning:
One is my brother and the other is not - is the thinking of a small, narrow minded person. For
those who are broadminded or wise, the entire world is one big family.
Some well wishers and friends even now tell me that I show excessive humility unnecessarily,
but I am convinced that in anything and everything, there is God. Respecting others is giving
respect to Him. It is now being corroborated while I read Srimad Bhagavataham, (Vide. Verse 26,
Chapter 5, Canto 5) wherein Lord Rishabha Deva, gives exhaustive instructions to his sons:
“Sarvani madhishnrthaya bhavadbhi-
Shcharani bhoothani sutha dhruvani,
Sambhavithavyani pade pade vo,
Viviktha drgbhisthadu harhanam me”.
Meaning, Oh! My Dear Sons, since I am in all animate and inanimate things in the world, you
please worship all those things. It will be the right worship, which I like most, because in that way
you offer me respect.

I had an earnest desire to study medicine, but circumstances prevented it. I ended up joining
government service, and retired as Joint-Secretary to Kerala Public service Commission.

I was married to my ‘murappennu’, Santha, and we have two children. My daughter, Laxmi
Jayaraj, a qualified Lawyer, is living in Sharjah. Her husband, Jayaraj is working as a Manager in
the Standard Chartered Bank in Dubai. They have two boys, Arjun and Ananth. My son, Jeevan,
is a Software Engineer, and it is with him that we are now living. His wife Lekshmi, a Family
Practitioner, runs a Clinic
of her own in Pearland. They too have two children, Muktha and Mukund. We are indebted to our
Lord Sree Guruvayoorappan for seven ‘janmas’ in having given us such a loving and affectionate
children and grand children. I believe that I could not have come this much far in my life, without
my wife’s help, and by the grace of God we are together even now.

I developed an interest in Astrology, the seed of which was sown early in me by my beloved
father. Fortunately, I had some good teachers too, from whom I learned a little more of Astrology
of various schools and of different thought processes, including Krishna Moorthy Padhathy. From
my experience, I understood that opportunities are like Sunrises and that if you wait for long, you
will lose it. I passed ‘Jyothisha Bhooshanam’ in Astrology. I used most of my free time to study,
prepare and present so many papers on various subjects in Astrological conferences and I used
to write articles in various Astrological magazines, including the one published by late Dr. B. V.
Raman, Bangalore. With God’s grace, I have a good number of clientele too, who believe in me
and whom I used to remember always in my prayers.
‘Gahana Karmano Gathi’, and Karma is the law of consequences-of merit and
demerit. The nature of Karma is but imponderable. So, I believe that success comes at the right
time with our hard work only when it is coupled with God’s grace. I began to devour various
books in Astrology though the fact is that Astrology is so vast that even a part of it cannot be
studied within a man’s lifetime. I guessed that a little knowledge of Sanskrit and some other
Scripts like ‘Vattezhuthu’, Kolezhuthu etc would

be helpful in learning something more of the subject in their proper perspective. With that
intention in mind, I took a post graduate degree in Malayalam Literature from the University of
Kerala, in which one paper was Sanskrit and thereafter I passed creditably a post graduate
diploma in Epigraphy conducted by the Archaeological department of government of Kerala. I
could complete a course in Public Relations too.
I believe that it is not what you create for yourself in life; it is what you leave behind
that defines your success in life. I found His presence in everything around me and actually felt

Him working through the world around me and speaking to me through it. I have witnessed
events that I would have passed off as coincidence, had they not happened in perfect
synchronicity with each other, leading up to a goal I explicitly asked for. I then came to absolutely
believe in the existence of God. It's just something that makes the impossible happen, that thing
which gives us the experience of experience. It is that capacity for existence that is the greatest
evidence of all. I know now that God shows up in remarkable and unusual ways, providing us
with guidance and insight into the soul, planting seeds that will move us towards our destiny.

In the meanwhile, I was fortunate to listen to the 108 days ‘Bhagavat Gita Yagna’of Swami
Sandeep Chaithanya, held at Trivandrum. In the
‘Ramayana Parayanam’ held once under the auspices
of Kerala Hindu Society of Houston, along with Shri.
Sasidharan Pillai, I also got a chance to read complete
Ramayanam, during the Malayalam month of
‘Karkkadakam.’ I got many opportunities to listen to
‘Bhagavatha’ and ‘Narayaneeya’ Sapthaham also, and
it enabled me to unfolding of many new thought
processes, as well. Now, Satsangs are held regularly
on every Saturday morning at the Namadwaar in
Pearland, and there are some discourses on Puranas
like Narayaneeyam and Bhagavatham at intervals, by learned speakers and Maha Bhagavathas.
My little knowledge, earned from different sources, tells me that God is
Transcendent and Immanent. He is Omnipotent. He is beyond space and time and He is
Omnipresent - ‘Sarvavyapi’ and ‘Antharyami’, and hence can appear in any form, anywhere and
at any time. Those that are seen in nature, and those that are invisible, are all His creations, with
a purpose. God is the all pervading Consciousness; the Supreme Power. He is not an object; He
is the Subject. Every object is in Him. We have to cross the three stages of Bhakthi- Kanishta or
Prakrtha, Madhyama and Uthama, with patience and perseverance to reach HIM.
With all humility I say that I am not worried about getting the so called Moksha by
any means. I like to join the group who believe that real renunciation (Moksha) is the giving up of
all desires and I know I am still only standing aghast, looking upwards, at the foot of the ladder. It
is not getting into the so called heaven. It is the removal of ‘ajnana’ and getting ‘vijnana’ in its
place. How can we enjoy Moksha if we get it only after death? I prefer ‘Daivika Bhakthi’ to
‘Vaidika Bhakthi’, as evinced by our ‘Raganuka Bhaktha’ Devotees of our Lord Sree
Guruvayoorappan and Self-realized Souls, like Poonthanam, Kurooramma, Vilwamangalam,
Melppathoor, Kunikkavu, Neelakanta Guru, Aajnam Nambbothiri, Malliyoor etc., who never cared

about Moksha. I believe that even if we desire Moksha, it is up to Him to give it to us, according
to our eligibility. Let us do only righteous things. I also like to join the group who pray:
‘Oh! God, I do not crave for a Kingdom, not for heaven nor rebirth. All I crave for is removal of the
sufferings of people’.
In this context, I express my deep gratitude to Sri Sunil Menonji for his selfless effort
and dedicated service in organizing this devotional Group, and appreciate the power of his
Satsang, by which he attracts people of similar thought from different walks of life, put them
together safely under the ambience of Bhakthi, towards our Lord Sree Guruvayoorappan and
keep maintaining that unity in diversity. May the Lord bless him and his family for
‘Deerkhayuraogya Soubhagya Soukhyam’.

Let me conclude this with a small special prayer to our Lord Sree Guruvayoorappan:

“Swasthi prajabhyam paripalayantham,

Nyayena margena mahim maheesha,
Go brahmanebhya shubhamasthu nithyam,
Loka samastha sukhino bhavanthu”,
meaning,
may there be the well-being of all the people; may the rulers rule the earth along the right path;
may the cattle along with good people have well being forever; may all the beings in the world
become happy and peace be everywhere.
