debatingitsprosandcons,butthevastmajorityofconsumersremainunfamiliarGMOsanduncleariftheyposea
risk,accordingtoarecentsurvey.
Awhopping47%ofalmost2,000USadultssurveyedbetweenMay18andMay20byconsumerresearchfirm
CivicSciencesaidtheyarenotfamiliarwithGMOsandareundecidedonwhethertheyharmhumanhealth.
Theremainingconsumersareevenlysplit26%to26%onwhetherGMOsharmhealth,CivicSciencereports.
ItwasinspiredtoaskUSadultstheirthoughtsaboutGMOsafteradefinitivestudybytheNationalAcademyofSciences,
EngineeringandMedicinefoundnosubstantiatedevidenceofadifferenceinriskstohumanhealthbetweencurrent
commerciallyavailablegeneticallyengineeredcropsandconventionallybredcrops.
AccordingtoCivicSciencespoll,womenlivinginthesuburbsaremorelikelytoadmittonotknowingaboutGMOsor
havingasetopinionontheirsafety,whilemenaremorelikelytoagreeGMOsarenotharmful.
Thegenderdivideontheissueissignificantforbrandsbecausewomenaremorelikelytobetheprimaryshopperfor
families.Therefore,brandsthattakeastandontheissueeitherbycertifyingtheirproductsarenonGMOorbylabeling
theirproductsascontainingGMOsbutstandingbytheirsafetyaremostlikelytoinfluencepurchases,CivicScience
suggest.
Consumerconfusionabounds
Thefindingsmirrorthoseofanotherrecentsurveyofmorethan1,000adultspublishedintheFederationofAmerican
SocietiesforExperimentalBiologyJournalthatfoundrespondentsseemedtoselectconflictingstatementsaboutthe
safetyofgeneticallymodifiedfoodsdependingonhowquestionswereposed.
Inaddition,thesurveyfoundthataftersubjectsweretestedontheirobjectiveknowledgeofGMOfoods,theirlevelsof
selfreportedknowledgedeclinedsomewhatandtheirbeliefsaboutGMOsafetyincreasedslightly.
ResultssuggestthatconsumersthinktheyknowmorethantheyactuallydoaboutGMfood,theauthorsnote.
Labelingmaybuyconsumerstime
WhilethesesurveysshowthatconsumersmaybesplitonthesafetyofGMOs,mostconsumersagreethattheyshould
belabeled,accordingtoarecentHarrisPollthatfound75%supportlabelinglegislation.
SociallisteninganalysisbyIRIthatcombsthroughsocialmediareferencesreinforcesconsumerinterestinlabeling,
identifyingitasthemostfrequentlymentionedsubtopicofGMOsfarexceedingreferencestobanningGMOsor
specifictypesoffoodsuchasvegetablesormeat.
ThissuggeststhatwhilethedebateoverthesafetyofGMOsinfoodcontinues,manyconsumerswantlabelingsothat
theycanmakefullyinformedpurchasedecisionsoncetheysortoutwheretheystandontheissue,IRIconcludes.
