Predicting earthquakes.

This is a 2-part research article on how to predict earthquakes, published in January and
May 2010 issues of The Astrological Magazine, Bangalore.

Part-1

Prediction of earth quakes is a formidable task in both science and astrology. Though
seismologists are keeping track of the under ground disturbances of the earth, it is not
possible to exactly know when the disturbances will turn into tremors shaking the earth
and killing people. The basic tenets of astrology can be of help in this regard which are
discussed in this article.

Some factors have been discussed by Varahamihira to predict earthquakes on the basis of
moon’s position in certain stars, analyzed in combination with certain terrestrial
phenomena. There is another way to predict earthquakes by analyzing eclipses. However
if we look at the numerous charts of earthquakes, we can observe a pattern. When this
writer analyzed numerous earthquakes that occurred since 1900, both on the basis of
higher magnitude and higher rate of causality, certain distinct patterns were observed as
follows.

• Mars as signifactor for land, must get connected with earthy signs by association
or aspect.
• Rahu as signifcator for earth and under ground must also get connected with
earthy sings.
• The Martian signs Aries or Scorpio must get connected with either or both of
these planets.
• Saturn’s aspect or association to these signs and planets increase the intensity of
earth quakes and the casualty rate.
• The malicious combination among the nodes, Mars and Saturn involving Martin
signs and earthy signs increase the chances of earthquakes.
• When such a combination occurs around Full moon or New moon, disturbances
are certain.
• When an eclipse is visible in an area with all the above combinations, that area
becomes a more likely candidate to receive tremors.
• There exists something similar to Paksha chiddra when earthquakes occur.
Particularly 4th, 6th thithis and 12th, 14th thithis seem to indicate some stress
experienced by the moon as it moves away and towards the Sun’s line of direct
influence.
• In other words, starting form 12th Thithi until 6th Thithi, the moon and the sun are
in some coupling, with the earth in between. Most of the earthquakes have
occurred when moon passes these thithis.
• The shaded area in the diagram below shows the vulnerable days for earthquake.
The continental plates get highly stressed when moon enters the 120 degree arc on
the side of earth facing the sun and behind the earth.

• When the above mentioned planets get connected with the earthy signs and
Martian signs with mutual aspect between themselves, during this period of
Moon’s motion around the earth, the earth is disturbed.

This can be ascertained from the following charts drawn for the earthquake times or
days.

Here are the top three tremors in terms of magnitude that occurred since 1900.

Mars and Saturn together aspect the earthy sign Virgo, while Ketu aspects the Martian
sign of Aries.
The Thithi is Trayodasi, with the moon coming closer to the Sun.
Virgo being a Dwiswabhava rasi suffers vulnerability indicating both stability and
movement.
The maximum malefic stress is received by Virgo which denotes South west direction
where Chile is situated.
There was total lunar eclipse on March 13, 1960 visible in Chile.

The worst tsunami in recent human memory was triggered by this earthquake.
Note the perfect combination of Rahu and Mars in Martian signs.
Saturn and Ketu aspect the Martian sign of Aries.
The 2 earthy signs Taurus and Virgo are aspected by Mars and Saturn respectively.
The maximum malefic aspect falls on the eastern direction. The earthquake occurred in
the east of the globe.
Mars and retro Saturn in watery signs showed disturbance in the waters.

Rahu and Saturn aspect the Martian sign of Aries while Virgo receives the aspect from
Mars. Saturn aspects Scorpio too while Ketu aspects Saturn.

The 4 common signs are stressed by malefics with maximum stress experienced in Pisces
with Luni-Solar opposition. The watery sign showed the role of tsunami in the North east
part of the globe as a fall out of the earthquake.

A partial lunar eclipse was visible in this area on May 14, 1976.

Since the time of the Full Moon a fortnight earlier, abnormal occurrences such as well
water gushing out and gas bursting out of the earth were noticed in the area. Note the sky
map of all the planets on one side of the nodes when the moon opposed the Sun a
fortnight earlier. Aries receives the aspect of Saturn and Rahu with Ketu posited there.
Mars aspects Scorpio while Saturn aspects Virgo. Mars from a fiery sign heats up Vayu
(aquarius) and Water (Pisces) showing the disturbance to these elements beneath the
surface. The stress is felt in East and Northeast making China vulnerable.
(The 2nd highest toll was reported in the tsunami triggered by the December 26, 2004
earthquake. It is explained in Chart-2)

A total lunar eclipse was visible on 27-10-1920 in this part of China.

This earthquake triggered landslides extensively that killed many people.

Note the two malefics Mars and Saturn in earthy signs.
Aries receives the aspect from Mars and Rahu while Ketu is posited there.
Scorpio is aspected by Saturn.
Maximum stress is felt in Aries in the east making China vulnerable.

Fire was the cause for the huge toll. The earthquake struck at lunchtime when many
people were using fire to cook food that broke out in many places. The fires spread
rapidly due to high winds from a nearby typhoon off the coast in Northern Japan and
some developed into firestorms which swept across cities.
Note the malefic combination of Sun, Mars and Rahu in the fiery sign. Scorpio receives
the aspect of Mars and Saturn while Aries is aspected by Ketu. Saturn is in Earthy sign
while Rahu fans the winds of 2 airy signs from Leo. The stress is in Leo signifying
eastern direction affecting Japan.

The affliction to Aries is caused by the nodes and Mars. Taurus, the earthy sign is
aspected by Mars and Saturn, while Saturn casts its 3rd aspect on Mars.
Mars aspects another earthy sign also (Capricorn).

The impact was too severe that the Himalayan Mountains opened up in parts. The gorges
and rifts in Balochistan owe much to this earthquake for their appearance.

of Saturn and Mars while Scorpio receives the aspect of Rahu.

Mars, Saturn and the nodes cast a deadly affliction to Capricorn, the earthy sign, the sign
of India in Mundane astrology.

This is also a perfect scene of earthquake with Aries getting afflicted by Mars and Saturn.
Scorpio gets afflicted by the nodes and Saturn. The earthy Taurus is also badly afflicted.

This earthquake which struck on the Republic day was also a classic combination of
earthquake parameters.
The affliction to Aries is there, besides the aspect of Mars on Saturn in the earthy sign.
Saturn afflicts Scorpio too.

Having the insight about the basic combinations as noted above, it is possible to venture
out to locate the times of future earthquakes.
To begin with let us see how we have just had a brief season of earthquakes in the last
few months.

It started with Mars in Taurus (earthy) aspecting Scorpio and Saturn aspecting Mars from
Leo.
The nodes did their job by aspecting Scorpio and Taurus. This season that started in
August proceeded with Mars shifting to Gemini and aspecting Virgo from there and
Saturn also moving to Virgo to lend twin malfeasance to Virgo and Scorpio.

Chennai experienced a tremor on 11 August 2009, when an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude

intensity struck off the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

It must be noted that a total solar eclipse was witnessed on 22-07-2009.

A tsunami alert was sounded which however did not materialize.

The stress region was localized in Capricorn, an earthy sign.
The malefic impact was dispersed with Rahu and Saturn on transit mood to the next sign.
The day also was Saptami when Moon was outside the hand-shake distance form sun.
The result was – no threat.

Futuristic predictions.

Applying these inputs, we can say that an earthquake season can be expected when
Rahu enters Scorpio in June 2011.

At that time, Mars will be in a strategic location of Aries aspecting Scorpio

On June 1, 2011 a partial solar eclipse will be seen in East Asia and North America.
The next fortnight will see a total lunar eclipse on June 15, 2011 when Mars would have
moved to Taurus.

This will be visible in most parts of earth – Asia, Europe, South America and parts of
Africa.

The stress region is Scorpio – denoting general west and North in particular.
Under-water tectonic movement is likely to happen around this time when moon will still
be in the 120 orb opposite to the sun.

The season will continue when Mars moves to Leo where it will stay for sometime
moving forth and back.
The stress level will increase when Mars joins Saturn in Virgo. But before Mars joins
Saturn, a partial lunar eclipse will be witnessed On June 4, 2012 in the Americas.

By August 15, 2012, both Mars and Saturn would enter Libra. Till Mars moves out to
Sagittarius in November 2012, the west and east regions of the world would have had bad
times with a trembling world.
The intensity also is likely to be high.

It can be noted that when the intensity in magnitude is high, the location of the direction
can be easily ascertained as in the above chart and in the first 3 charts.
In other case studies, the intensity is not as high but the casualties were high – and
locating the place was not as distinct as it is with high magnitude earthquakes.
But when casualties increase, it makes news! We have to work further to explore the
causality rate from the earthquake charts. This analysis is thus not yet over!

Predicting earthquakes.
Part-2

Conventional wisdom on prediction of earthquakes given by Varahamihira harps on 4

types of earthquakes based on the lunar asterism on the day of earthquake. The
earthquake may take the nature of Vayu or Agni or Indra or Varuna. The 28 stars
including Abhijit have been categorized into these 4 types.
Terrestrial symptoms can be seen for a week before the occurrence of an earthquake,
depending on the type of the earthquake.
Varahamihira also gives us clues on the places and the kind of people who will be
affected by these earthquakes. They have been tabulated below for easy reference.

These 4 types are based on 2 factors, one, the star of the day and the other, on the part of
the day. The day starting form sunrise in a particular place is divided into 4 parts of 6
hours each. Starting from the first part, they are categorized in the same order of Vayu,
Agni, Indra and Varuna.

When the Vayu symptoms are seen for about a week, prior to the transit of moon in the
star of the Vayu group, one can expect the earthquake in the first 6 hours of the day; for
Agni type in the next 6 hours and so on for Indra and Varuna types. Keen observation of
the terrestrial happenings must be done and they must be related to the movement of the
moon in the respective category of stars. Varahamihira has also noted the places to be
affected, thereby giving a clue on the place of occurrence of an earthquake. But these
places are within India, barring a mention of two locations outside India, in the Northeast
and northwest border.

In reality, the star and the time of the day do not go together with a particular category.
This has been acknowledged by Varahamihira, when he explains how any 2 categories
can be mixed and predictions be made.

The conclusions drawn from Varahamihira can be stated as follows:

• Vayu and Agni types occur in windy and hot seasons and in the day time.

by Varuna, Indra and Agni.(The recent massive tsunami was triggered by a Vayu
type earthquake as it happened in the first 6 hours and in the star of Vayu

• Agni and Vayu types result in sufferings to mankind and the rulers.
• Indra and Varuna earthquakes result in good yields.
• When the symptoms of Vayu and Varuna combine and the earthquake occurs in
the asterism of one of them, people of Ujjain, Kashmir, Videha, Dravida and
 those living near Sarayu river will suffer. The countries in North West of India
(Pakistan and Afghanistan) also will suffer.
• When the symptoms of Indra and Agni combine and the earthquake occurs in the
asterism of one of them, people of western India and China will suffer.

Broadening the scope of earthquake prediction.

Practical application of Varahamihira’s tips calls for a continuous monitoring of the

climate in a particular place. We can not make prediction for a far away place by sitting
in a different place. The climate must be monitored continuously. This makes the
prediction of earthquake a difficult one.
We also have no clue about how to predict the occurrence of earthquakes in other parts of
the world. If we analyze the severe earthquakes based on the intensity in terms of
magnitude, we find that most of them have originated outside India. The highly intense
ones need not necessarily be highly fatalistic, as it is not the earthquake that kills; but it
is the man made structures that kill people.

When this writer analyzed the high intensity ones since 1900, noted by the U.S.
Geological Survey, it was found that most of them had occurred in the highly seismic
regions of the world such as the Pacific ring and off Indonesia. The parameters discussed
in the 1st part of this article are exactly in place in the charts constructed for the
earthquake times. When all those factors were present at the moment of an earthquake,
the intensity had been quite high.

When this writer applied the tips of Varahamihira, the star and times did not always
match, but the star based type was more pronounced. When the star type is Vayu, the
earthquake has resonated very far and wide as told by Varahamihira. The highly intense
ones occurring in the seas have generated tsunamis. Here again the tsunamis have
resulted in loss of life when, moon in the earthquake chart had been afflicted badly.
Moon stands for people in mundane astrology. Affliction to moon in addition to the
presence of all the factors (Martian signs, earthy signs and affliction to these signs caused
by malefics particularly the nodes) causes fatalities form the earthquakes.

For easy reference, the top 14 earthquakes, based on magnitude and released by USGS
have been analyzed astrologically and catalogued as below.

The Observation:-

• We find that barring one instance (S.No 5, off the coast of Ecuador), the others
have occurred within the ring between Dwadasi and Sashti in both pakshas.
• Vayu type star has prominent presence indicating a far reaching tremor effect.
• The earthy sign Virgo had been afflicted badly in almost all the major
earthquakes. Virgo being a Dwiswabhava rasi with earthy nature is an easy target
for causing a ‘shake’ by the malefic planets.
• Case studies 9, 10 and 14 show no affliction to Virgo. The devastation potential is
less even if moon is afflicted.
• When all the planetary and sign based connections are present, the earthquake had
been devastating.
• Less or nil affliction to moon ensures less or nil fatality.
• The high intensity ones have happened in the seas only, in the seismic zones of
the world.
• The learning from this is that the astrologer must look for the planetary
combination and the affliction to earthy signs. When they occur within the Thithi
period (between Dwadasi and sashti) and when moon transits Vayu stars during
that period, high intensity earthquakes can be expected in seismic zones of the
world.

A comparison of Chilean earthquakes concur with the norms we have seen so far.

Three earthquakes have occurred in Chile in the last 100 years, the most recent one
occurring on 27th February this year.
All the three had caused tsunamis.
We can note some prominent features in all the cases, namely Virgo getting afflicted and
the Martian signs receiving aspects from malefics. Affliction to watery signs by Saturn
and Mars can be noticed indicating tsunamis. Moon had been caught in the tangle in all
these occasions showing heavy loss of life.
The worst earthquake happened in 1960 in Vayu star showing widespread impact.
The night time earthquakes had occurred on Varuna stars.

Let us take a close look at the three earthquakes.

The most recent one occurred on 27-02 -2010 triggering a tsunami.

The Martian signs Aries and Scorpio are aspected by Ketu and Saturn respectively.
Virgo is marred by Saturn’s presence. Another earthy sign Capricorn is aspected by Mars
while the watery signs are afflicted by Mars and Saturn showing the tsunami potential.
Moon joining Mars ensured heavy loss of life.

The star was Aslesha, the Varuna star. It occurred in the last quarter of day that is, before
sunrise.

Similar and most devastating combination occurred in the chart shown below. This was
the most severe earthquake ever experienced in the last 100 years.
Look at Virgo which receives the brunt in worst earthquakes. All the parameters
(affliction to Martian signs, earthy signs) were fulfilled. In addition Mars in the watery
sign aspecting Virgo triggered a tsunami.

The star was Aswini, the Vayu star. The effect was far reaching and devastating.

The chart given below is yet another high magnitude earthquake that devastated Chile on
11-11-1922.
Here also Virgo is afflicted. All parameters except the Thithi are fulfilled. But moon had
just progressed by less than 6 degrees from Sashti.
Mars- Moon opposition ensured casualties.
The affliction caused to watery signs by Mars and Saturn triggered the tsunami.

The star was Pushya, the Agni star. The earthquake occurred in the second quarter of the
day.
