The programme
Identifying and monetising new opportunities is fundamental to ensure
long-term success for operators. Key business enablers, including
capable and cost-effective technologies, must be deployed in order to
develop a sustainable future but it carries huge risk unless the
business and technology environments are fully understood.

Outcomes and competency

development

This interactive and comprehensive university accredited programme focuses

specifically on LTE as the key business enabler for telecoms operators over
the next few years. It enables participants to carry out a critical business
appraisal for broadband technologies and specifically LTE within their own
organisational context, and develops competencies in the following areas:

CRITICALLY and confidently analyse technologies as a business

proposition within their own business context and in a range of
different scenarios

CONTRIBUTE more effectively to the development of business

strategy and planning for mobile broadband technologies

Building the Business Case

Assessing Technology Options

EXPLAIN the changing dynamics and drivers for change of the mobileand converged-telecoms market including the key customer and
industry trends that are driving the requirement for high-speed data

Evaluating Costs & Business Models

Managing Successful Implementation

Maximising Return on Investment

ENSURE that future broadband initiatives are backed up with the

required rigorous analysis and scrutiny, and reduce the risk associated
with broadband business planning

DESCRIBE the technical concepts underpinning broadband and

compare different broadband implementation options

FULLY APPRECIATE the role of complementary and alternative

technologies

SUCCESSFULLY scope, resource and plan a complex crossfunctional broadband initiative, focusing on LTE options

WORK more effectively across functional divisions within the business

through a higher degree of understanding

CONTRIBUTE more effectively to the development of competitive

advantage of the business including a realistic assessment of the
value that LTE and other broadband technologies bring to the
organisation in different scenarios

At the end of the course, the delegate will be able to:

LTE has the potential to enable new and exciting services, radically changing
business models and operations (not least by reducing the cost per
megabyte of data). We explore the business case, implementation options,
key opportunities, complementary and alternative technologies, planning and
executing LTE initiatives, and the financial aspects. We spend time discussing
the changing customer proposition and user experience, new business
models, and partnerships.
Industry data and examples of best practice from the Informa Telecoms and
Media Research Team is used throughout to back up the ideas and to put
concrete evidence into the discussions. New concepts and ideas developed
throughout the programme are immediately applied to a practical business
simulation where they are tested, consolidated and assessed thoroughly.

DAY 3pm Change, Leadership & People Issues

Day 1 provides a comprehensive analysis of the current situation, future

trends and strategies. Regulatory issues are considered along with
competing and complementary technologies such as WiFi, Femto Cells,
WiMAX & HSPA+. The aim is to provide a clear picture of the way ahead
for LTE, using information from Informa Telecoms & Media Research team.

DAY 2 LTE/Broadband Technology &

Customer Proposition
Day 2 provides a useful and comprehensive overview of LTE technology
within the radio access network and the core network. This is presented in
sufficient detail to enable a full and detailed analysis of network
performance and costs fully utilised within the business simulation. The
issues of backhaul and capacity planning are explored, along with overall
system performance. The potential of LTE is explored from the customers
point of view, including vertical markets, applications such as social
networking/Web 2.0, video, advertising, and mHealth. The impact on
handsets and user applications are described, as well as the resulting
business models.

DAY 3am Successful Technology

Implementation/Projects
Telecom companies implement strategy through their projects, and the
environment has become more complex and fast moving in recent years as
the pace of innovation has accelerated. LTE will accelerate this change. This
module sets out the key issues of modern technology implementation by
aligning projects with corporate strategy, and progressing through project
planning and analysis stages to presentation of a successful proposal.
Project planning, scoping, resourcing and risk analysis are explored in detail.
The role of partnerships has increased in importance, and this is also
explored in some depth.

This module is used to consider change management, leadership and

people issues within the fast changing telco business environment. It is also
practically applied in the context of the on-going business simulation. The
overall structure, management team, existing workforce, new hires and key
business partnerships and relationships are considered within the wider
context of establishing a successful and motivated team to drive
implementation and to make the right decisions.

DAY 4 LTE/Broadband Cost Analysis, Planning

(Cost/GigaByte) & Return On Investment
Planning for LTE implementations is discussed in some depth. Special
emphasis is placed on radio network planning, core network infrastructure
and backhaul capacity planning. The cost/gigabyte tool is introduced to
enable useful simulation of the various cost elements of the LTE system
providing an estimate of the cost of carrying data over the network. Return
on Investment assessment requires that LTE is assessed in terms of its
financial performance. In this module, concepts such as net present value,
cash flow and return on investment are explored and practically applied to
the business simulation. It is designed to give participants an excellent
commercial foundation on which to critically analyse the business
proposition and make commercially grounded decisions.

DAY 5 The Business Simulation

The business simulation runs throughout the programme providing an
opportunity for delegates to critically assess the LTE business proposition,
and to apply and test new concepts and ideas. It also allows delegates to
analyse how these concepts could be applied to their own real-life work
situations. Day 5 provides the opportunity to develop the Business
Implementation plan and prepare for the team presentations.
(NB: Course Contents are subject to change)

COMPETENCY DEVELOPMENT JOURNAL (CDJ)

After the programme, the OPTIONAL Competency Development Journal can be used to
ensure you consolidate the learning and apply it directly to your own organisation and
role. The CDJ is an online programme of additional learning, consolidation and
reflection that lasts for 8 weeks, covering the five major competency areas.

Each learning team is given a whole range of

data and tools to use for their bid. They work
within the team context to synthesize a fully
structured proposal. It is a great opportunity for
delegates to apply the learning from the other
course modules into a practical situation and
explore how these subjects relate to each other.

Business Simulation:
Bringing it all together
Throughout the week, participants, grouped into
learning teams, are set the challenge of
developing a commercially viable business
proposition for LTE, as well as a fully specified
implementation plan.

The team context also provides an environment

where the linkages between the various
corporate functions can be tested and
experienced first-hand.

The delegates are briefed as to the scope,

format and expectations in order to ensure each
team is fully aware of the requirements, and that
each participant can ensure they maximise the
learning opportunity throughout the modules.
The scenario is totally fictitious, but the data
presented is designed to be as real as possible
and is based on the work of Informa telecoms
analysts.

On the final day of the program, each team is

asked to present their fully costed proposal to
the other teams. Their plan includes a full
analysis and proposal in the following eight
areas:
Overall corporate strategy
The business case
The project plan
