This weekend, with the arrival of our new priest, Fr. McKinney, our parishes will begin anew
so to speak. When people speak of new beginnings, they usually mean more than a physical start,
but a good mental overhaul. What better way to raise the curtain on a new you than to clear
your conscience of any past sins and set your mind on a path toward positive living. Of course,
this will lead you to think of life and death, how short life is, and how long eternity is! A serious
Catholic is aware of what transpires at deathwe will meet Christ who will make it plain to us
whether our eternal condition will be one of misery or happiness. We will be judged: So each of
us shall give account of himself to God, Romans 14:12. Just how God will do it is still a mystery,
but He will inform us whether we are ready for eternal happiness in heaven, whether we must
undergo further purification in purgatory, or whether we must spend eternity in hell. This has
been known as the Particular Judgment in the Church, this meeting with Christ at the time of
our death. Since we dont know when well die and be judged, we ought to be preparing for this
meeting constantly. As was said earlier, now is a good time to re-set your path toward Christ and
the first step would be to go to Confession, or Reconciliation as it is now called.
The Catholic Church teaches that Purgatory exists, and the people detained there are helped by
the prayers of the living here on earth, but principally by the prayer of the Mass. Purgatory is not
mentioned in the Bible; however, Christian tradition going back to the 2nd century was strong in its
belief of a place of purification for those who died with no mortal (serious) sin, but still had
venial sins. Remember, nothing defiled can enter into the Presence of God in heaven (Isaiah 25:8
and Rev. 21:7). Sin would be such a defilement. But, were ALL sinners, thus prompts the
question: Who, then, can be saved? The word, purgatory, may not be found in Scripture, but
the idea is. In the Old Testament, we read: It is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the
dead, that they may be loosed from their sins, 2 Mach 12:46. This CANNOT refer either to
those in heaven or those in hell, for in heaven, there is no sin, and in hell, there is no hope. St.
Paul, in the New Testament, says of certain ones that they shall be saved yet so as through fire, 1
Cor 3:15. It infers that slight sins are purged (washed) away, hence the name, Purgatory. These are
all clear, biblical references to purgatory to attain ordinary justice. Without purgatory, a majority
of us would be hoping in vain for life eternal in heaven.
Purgatorys pains are quite realit is not heaven! The comforting thought is that the
punishment is only temporary, for all who go there will at some point be with God. The souls
there cannot help themselves very well; they can only endure. But the faithful on earth can help
them through prayer. Purgatory is the masterpiece of Gods MERCY. He knows were not perfect
and He doesnt regard purgatory as punishmentin His eyes it is PURIFICATION of the soul.
The main suffering is the loss of the sight of God and realizing it was due to our own choices on
earth, and that NOTHING can be done about it now, short of peoples prayers on earth. It is an
INTERNAL burning to be with Him. We can lessen our Purgatory by simply doing Gods Will
which includes obeying His Commandments, following his Precepts and going to confession at
least monthly. Fr. John Reinkemeyer once told me, Our actions determine our eternitywill it be
smoking or non-smoking?
