Standard Color Palette

(show examples)

The Federal Period in America uses a range of white, buff,

and gray neutrals in homage to the Greek and Roman
statuary it draws inspiration from. It also tends to feature
slightly more saturated colors than the light and delicate
palette of the concurrent Georgian period in England.

Description
Glass wall panels were used in some Federal style
homes. This was more common in more formal rooms.

The wall panels were all constructed of wood and in most

Federal homes were all painted white and also can be
known as wainscoting, which can come in a variety of
styles.
Wall panels could contain other decorative ornamentation
such as swags, garlands, urns, and classical geometric
patterns that were common.
This ornamentation could be seen carved on wood wall
panels, cast into the plaster walls and carved into the
detailed wooden mantels.
Additional detail was commonly added to the walls. Due to
the ceilings being so high in these style homes, pediments
were added on the wall to intensify the doorways from one
room to the next.
High base boards and dentil crown molding were and
additional features that also gave the walls a beautiful
appearance.
Most of the walls were constructed of plaster over wooden
slates and rooms took on a more rectangular/curved
layout.
Shades of green were a common color within Federal
style homes as were various other colors that can be seen
in the federal style overview above.

Pilasters were another common characteristic on Federal
style interior walls. Pilasters are an architectural design
element that resembles a column but has no supporting
need.
Pilasters contain a base, a shaft and a capitol which is
common with any column. The pilasters only project from
the wall a couple inches.
Many walls also have additional molding such as dados,
thin trim, panel molding, picture rails, plinth blocks, base
molding, and dentil cornices.

Wallpaper with patriotic motifs, or elegant scenes were

also common in Federal Style homes. It was very common
for wainscoting to be on the lower part of the walls and for
wallpaper to be on the upper part of the walls.
The common theme of this period of wallpaper include
swages, urns, patriotic images, acanthus leaves, etc.
It wasnt uncommon to have some rooms with paint and
some rooms with wallpaper.

Wide planked wood flooring was used in more farm

style type homes that were not home of the higher
class. The wood planks could vary in size from wide to
very thin. The shades and the texture of the flooring
was also different based upon its finish.

Within kitchen areas two different types of flooring was

commonly used. A tiled flooring was used on the main
part of the floor and in all areas in front of a fireplace a
brick flooring was used.

The style of carpeting that was used in federal style
homes featured geometric patterns and lots of vivid
color choices. The carpeting in many cases was a very
low pile and similar to the texture of an area rug. The
use of brighter colors is carpeting was more common
then natural solid colors.

Other flooring options that can be seen in federal style

homes is the used of stone slabs in front of fireplaces
as well as parqueted wood flooring. This particular
type of flooring has a more polished look then the
rough cut wood flooring that would have been found in
middle American structures over the higher class
structures.

Description
Georgian/Federal style homes typically have one main entry door,
although there can be numerous auxiliary doors leading to patios,
decks, the backyard or a side yard. Both main entry and auxiliary
doors are rectangular. Main entry doors range from plain to fancy and
often correlate with the elaborateness level of the home. They are
linear, usually featuring a six-panel pattern. Both single and double
inswing units are correct for the style, and both types are commonly
topped with arched transom windows. Georgian/Federal homes
distinguish the main entry by painting the door a dark color that
contrasts with the traditionally white door trim. More recent examples,
as shown here, use a broader color range for both doors and door
trim. Side doors share panel designs similar to main entry doors,
although the side doors are slightly narrower. Occasionally a side
door may include a large area of glass.
Doors in Georgian/Federal style homes are relatively wide. When
their width exceeds 42", the doors are split in half to make double
doors, although they are detailed to maintain the look of single door
units. Side doors are narrower than front doors but are often paneled
similarly. In northern climates, patio doors are rarely seen on historic
Georgian/Federal homes. In warmer regions, however, multiple patio
doors are often used across the back faade following the pattern
established by the windows.

The earliest colonial door hardware was hand-forged iron and

featured graceful curves and curled ends. In the most sophisticated
areas of the American colonies, these hardware pieces were an
opportunity for local blacksmiths to showcase their level of skill.

Details

Double-hung windows
The size and proportion of windows from the earliest American
house styles, including Georgian/Federal, were directly linked to
the common sizes of glass panes that were available at the time
of each housing style. Instead of cutting and wasting precious
glass, window makers created different sizes by adding or
subtracting an entire row or column of glass panes.

EXTERIOR

All windows in Georgian/Federal style homes are vertically

proportioned with the exception of transom windows and eyebrow
windows (see Accent Windows on the next page)
In windows of different sizes, glass pane sizes should be the same or
within 12% of each other
The main windows on the second floor should be shorter and narrower
than those on the first floor
Window combinations, with sills going down to the floor, were
occasionally used for units over 6'-6" tall
Hardware was usually brass with lock and keeper, hand lift, or finger lift.
They also come in distressed bronze.

Wood Stains/Paint
Accent Windows

Georgian/Federal style homes use a variety of dormer types where

accent windows are appropriate. Gabled, round-roofed, shed and clipgabled dormers are common and symmetrically placed along the front
and back faades. Windows in these dormers are shorter in proportion
than standard-location windows, and are sometimes square.
Stand-alone, quarter-circle accent windows are frequently used on upper
stories and placed near the roof peak on the gable ends, which is usually
not the main faade.
Transom windows are only appropriate as accent windows for doors and
for central feature window groupings often used on the upper levels.

INTA302 Historic Reference Chart

In Federal style houses, many of which are large enough to have three
levels, eyebrow windows are used to bring light into the third floor.
Federal eyebrow windows should not be confused with the curved
windows used in the dormers of Shingle style homes. Federal style
eyebrow windows were rectangular and usually wider than tall.

Description
Chandeliers were very popular during this architectural style and are always
located within the center of a room. Not all chandeliers had the same form, but
they did all have the same circular shape.
This chandelier is an American Federal Style Chandelier and includes 6 lights.
Originally it was run on gas but has since been converted to electric.
Additions to the chandelier included crystals for a more formal appearance. In this
particular chandelier, the crystals were hung from the arms of the candles (lights).

The lighting allows the crystals to shimmer and give a more gran appearance.
Federal style wall sconces could be seen in Federal style homes on either side of
the fire place as well as in hallways.
Typically, wall federal style wall sconces had two arms with globes, and was
constructed of polished brass metal.
Shell designs were very common with the federal style and this can be seen on the
wall base of the sconce.
Some sconces also had the addition of an Eagle on them. The eagle was a very
symbolic symbol within Federal style architecture.

CONCEPT STATEMENT:
This Federal style housing facility will be designed to accommodate
women and children in need of transitional housing. The Federal style building
references early Americas strong will to fight through hard times as an
independent nation, much like the users of the facility have fought through
hardships in their lives. The design features of this Federal style facility will stay
true to form with wainscoting and plaster walls, intricately detailed crown
molding and entry ways, and beautiful dark hard wood flooring. Symmetricity
will be the basis for the design, with doors, windows, and rooms being
balanced on both sides of the building which is common with Federal style
structures. A color palette of greens, grays, and blues will be combined in a
variety of tones to compliment both the interior finishes, and neoclassical style
of furniture that will be incorporated into the design of the facility.

COLOR PALETTE:

Natural colors such as various shades of whites can be used to help brighten up a space and is a great color choice when
wanting to use bolder colors for the furnishings or accessories. White is commonly used in many federal style homes on walls
and as the trim. In many cases white is also corresponded with gold/gilded trim or accents.
Green is a very tranquil color that resembles nature. The color green is commonly used in Federal style homes and this color
has a very calming effect. This color can be seen in many different spaces within homes during this time period and was a
very popular color.
This color palette will work nicely within the transitional shelter design because it will give the environment a very calm and
relaxing feeling of comfort and safety as well as sticking with the colors that is most associated with Federal style structures.

SOLUTION JUSTIFICATIONS

DESIGN JUSTIFICATION:
Within the design for the womens Federal style transitional shelter, I took into account various types of requirements. The
main purpose of this design what to work within the Federal era style of architecture and interior characteristics. Colors that were
common in this time period was very important for the design as well as the balance between color, line and texture. This design
contains a nice balance in color between each living area/residence within the design.
The federal style is a very traditional style with wood floors, elegant moldings and other various time period characteristics.
These characters can be see within the new pieces of furniture that is located within this design.
The design of this transitional womens shelter includes characteristics of natural hardwood floors, tile for the bathrooms,
updated yet traditional lighting fixtures, intricate crown molding and wall wainscoting. Other features such as green products were
greatly considered to have the design more environmentally friendly. Low or Zero VOC paints where also chosen as they do not five
off as many
All of the characteristics including the furnishings, finishes, and lighting have allowed this design to come together nicely
while still staying true to form.
