The Hajj is a yearly Islamic pilgrimage to the Holy city Makkah, and an obligatory religious
responsibility for Muslims that should be carried out at least once in a lifetime by all the
adult Muslims who are sane, financially and physically able of undertaking the sacred journey,
and can also support their family while they are absent. It is one of the 5 basic pillars of Islam,
beside Shahadat, namaz, Zakaat, and Sawm or roza.
The Hajj is one of the largest yearly gatherings of Muslims on the earth. The condition of being
physically and financially able of performing the Hajj is known as istita'ah, and a Muslim who
fulfils this form is called a mustati. The Hajj is an expression of the unity and harmony of the
Muslim people, and their submission to ALLAH Almighty. The word Hajj means "to aim a
journey", which connotes both the external act of a trip and the inner act of intentions.
