Flamenco Festival
London
One of the biggest events of its kind in the
world, this colourful festival boasts traditional
and contemporary amenco styles, major
names and exciting new talents, as well as
musicians ranging from guitarists to singers.
Those strutting their stuff at Sadlers Wells
(p. 68), include Sara Baras (1-8 Mar), the
Spanish dance forms superstar, who rst
toured aged 15 and had her own dance
troupe by 26. Acclaimed Catalan singer
Miguel Poveda performs on 4 & 9 Mar. And
Gala Flamenca (11-13 Mar), showcases
artists from the Jerez and Sevillian schools of
dance as well as the ground-breaking dancer
and choreographer Marco Flores. Go see.

MASLENITSA ENSEMBLE PRODUCTIONS
In Russia and the Ukraine,

Maslenitsa is famous as a
celebration marking both Lent and an
ancient festival of the sun. Meanwhile, here in London once a year, the family-friendly
Russian Maslenitsa festival in Trafalgar Square promises fabulous dance and music
performances with styles ranging from classical to pop, as well as jazz and traditional folk.
Younger visitors will enjoy its childrens programme, featuring the interactive Theatre Chudaki
and a range of fun activities linked to the recent Sochi Winter Games. Visitors can also browse
food stalls galore, tucking into traditional Eastern European cuisine like borscht, then wander
around the gorgeous arts and crafts fair. Mayor Boris Johnson says, Londons Maslenitsa
celebrations are a sure sign that spring is on its way, so put on your sunniest face and come

London Handel Festival
CATCH

Germanys George Frideric Handel is famous for his Baroque operas and songs including
the exquisite Messiah. Whats less known is that he lived and worked in London from 1712,
so theres no better place to pay homage. The city continues to serve him with a pool of
extraordinary performers, says Laurence Cumming, festival Musical Director, whos secured
names like Europes La Nuova Musica (above, 12 Mar) for the event. Other highlights range
from the opera Arianna In Creta (3-6 Mar) at the Royal College of Music, to the annual Handel
Singing Competition (18 Mar) at St. Georges, Hanover Square (Handels local parish church).

become Laureate of England. On 6 Mar Britains Vincent Dance
Company presents Motherland, a confrontational dance theatre

Dance Festival
Move It offers dance fans a chance to shop,
hear live interviews with experts and stars,
join master classes, watch performances
and possibly meet their idols. Last year
the presence of Strictly Come Dancing
judge and former ballerina
Darcey Bussell caused
a near-riot. Move It was
the rst public event that
allowed me to get close to
my Strictly Come Dancing
idols, says the events ofcial
blogger Vikki Jane Vile, and
even attend a dance class
taught by them. It makes
experiences like these accessible
to everyone. The expo covers the whole
gamut of dance from ballroom to ballet and
hip-hop to salsa, with performers from top

Londons celebration of the patron saint of Ireland is the third largest in the world. Now in
its 13th year, the St. Patricks Day Parade attracts over 100,000 people, many from the
capitals large Irish community, although everyone is invited to join in the fun. Taking place the
day before St. Patricks Day itself, the 2014 theme is World Of Dance, so expect plenty of
Riverdance-style displays. It all kicks off at midday when the parade sets off from Piccadilly (map
C4/5) with bands, drummers, marvellous costumes, oats galore and more, plus throngs of
revellers enjoying the craic (thats party to those who dont speak Celtic). Afterwards you can
experience more Irish culture at the festival held in Trafalgar Square where youll nd live comedy
and lm tents, a music and dance stage, an Irish food market as well as arts and crafts stalls.

BFI London Lesbian

& Gay Film Festival
This culturally important lm season centring
on BFI Southbank (p. 68) still manages to break
boundaries with screenings of the best queer
cinema from around the globe. Last years
hits included James Francos much discussed
Interior Leather Bar, as well as I Am Divine, a
documentary about John Waters drag superstar.
This months LLGFF offers galas, screenings,
erce parties, on-stage events, late bars, DJs
and more. The festival is also entwined with an
on-going retrospective of the iconic gay British
lmmaker Derek Jarman. Queer Pagan Punk
Jarman And The New Queer Cinema examines
his enduring legacy and cult hits like his Benjamin
Britten scored War Requiem (1989), which
starred Laurence Olivier in his last lm role, and
Edward II (1991) with its pop-video aesthetics.

Bangers and Mash is a

quintessential British favourite,
a hearty serving of sausages
and creamy mashed potato,

smothered in onion gravy.
Though mostly associated
with World War II, as a cheap
and lling meal for the working
classes, it actually originates
as far back as 1912. The name
bangers derives from when
sausages were rationed during
the war; it was cheaper to make
them with a high water content,
so if cooked carelessly, they
were likely to explode under
the heat and cause a bang.

The rise of the comic book

Finally bursting out of teenage
bedrooms, comic books are now
very much in the mainstream.
Three of 2013s top 10 grossing
movies came from comic-book
characters (Iron Man, Superman
and Thor). But if you need
further evidence that comics
have well and truly come of age,
head to ExCeL London, where
more than 10,000 fans will
gather for the London Super
Comic Convention (15-16 Mar).
Pausing only to accept a free
hug in the hallway, you enter a
vast space packed with comics,

toys and merchandise. Wander
down Artist Alley, where you can
pick up original drawings or get
comics signed; or sit in on a
Q&A session with more than 30
top comic creators like Howard
Chaykin and Mark Buckingham.
But the undoubted highlight will
be the inaugural London Super
Cosplay Competition, judged by
make-up expert Riki LeCotey and
professional cosplayer Yaya Han.

The third annual Camellia Festival (1-30 Mar)
takes place at Chiswick House, a magnicent
neo-Palladian villa set in a formal Italian garden.
Its 96 metre-long conservatory has long
housed one of the worlds most important, rare
and colourful collections of camellias, including
the Middlemists Red, one of only two on earth.
The festival features the camellia collection and
an exhibition on the conservatory, which was
restored in 2010 to the tune of 12 million,
and celebrates its 200th birthday this year. The
shop will sell plants and a limited-edition print

We painters take the same
liberties as poets and madmen.
So said 16th-century
Renaissance painter Paolo
Veronese, in response to
early criticism that his works
were too opulent. Yet it was
this decorative style and
vibrant colouring (as above,
in The Conversion Of Mary
Magdalene) that became
his trademark.
The rst monographic show
of the artist ever to be held
in the United Kingdom, the
National Gallerys Veronese:
Magnicence In Renaissance
Venice (p. 56) displays 50
works, ranging from altarpieces
to allegorical paintings.
Born in Verona, Veronese
moved to Venice, where
he was trained by a local

craftsman. Initially inuenced
by the colouring used by Titian,
Veroneses earlier work was
reective of the Mannerism
movement, which focused
on intellectual sophistication
and the articial. He became
fascinated by the splendour
of 16th-century Venice, and
depicted incredible feasts,
lavish clothes, and scenes
of aristocratic life, culture,
fun and pleasure.
The breathtaking works on
display include Allegories Of
Love, a series of four paintings
each focusing on a different
theme unfaithfulness, scorn,
respect and happy union as
well as mythological paintings
of the 1560s and 1570s, which
he sold to international clients,

such as two paintings bought
for Philip IV by Velzquez.
Although successful during
his lifetime, Veroneses inuence
was not recognised until after
his death. But his legacy lives on
in the works of great artists such
as Peter Paul Rubens and
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

A major new exhibition at the British Museum,

Vikings: Life And Legend (p. 44), will be the
rst to grace its new Sainsbury Exhibitions
Gallery, part of the new World Conservation
and Exhibitions Centre, set to open later this
year. It explores the period between AD
800-1500, when the Vikings expanded and
brought together artistic, religious and political
ideas from across four continents.
The remains of a 37 metre-long warship from
1025, will be at the heart (or rather, the helm)
of the display, as well as artefacts like The
Vale Of York Hoard (pictured above) and
the Lewis Chessman Berserkers (below).

Iconic artist Richard Hamilton is considered the

founding father of the Pop Art movement that
took Britain (and later, America) by storm in
the 1950s. Hamilton often made use of brash
imagery to reference aspects of popular
culture and consumerism, as seen in his Interior II
(pictured above). This month, witness two of his
large-scale installation pieces at the ICA (p. 56)
or visit the retrospective at Tate Modern (p. 57)
to learn more about his work and life.

newly-appointed dame (above), heads the cast
of Nol Cowards comedy Blithe Spirit (from

70-year career boasts 68 lms, from The Lady
Vanishes to Bedknobs And Broomsticks.
Her many stage roles include Blithe Spirits

over-the-top performance she revives this month
at the Gielgud Theatre. Its almost four decades
since she last trod the boards in London in the
National Theatres 1975 Hamlet. You could say

all, I am 88. The play about the accidental
resurrection of a writers spiteful rst wife in

Rufus Hound (right, Never Mind The Buzzcocks)
star in the UK premiere of the 2004 slapstick
musical comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at the
Savoy Theatre (from 10 Mar, p. 60). Based on
the 1988 Hollywood lm, which starred Steve
Martin and Michael Caine, it follows two
conmen, independently working the French
Riviera, who join forces for the scam of a
lifetime. Lyricist David Yazbeks songs are
both laugh-out-loud funny and heart-dancingly
tuneful, according to Hound, and the jokes
reworked to suit London theatregoers.

Katherine Kingsley, who appeared last year

Games, when awe-struck
cycling fans watched top
athletes race for victory at
the Velodrome in the Queen
Elizabeth Olympic Park. Now,

nal two days of the Revolution
Series 2013-14 on 14-15 Mar.
This prestigious cycling
event will see 150 of the worlds
elite riders competing at the
state-of-the-art Velodrome,
including Olympic stars Laura
Trott, Jason Kenny and Ed
Clancy. I cant wait to compete
at the Velodrome again, Trott
has said. The venue holds

This competition takes place
on the 250-metre superfast
track, with an afternoon and
evening session each lasting
three hours, comprising both
endurance and sprint events.

to all ages, in the disciplines of
mountain, road and Velodrome

sandwich with homemade apple
crumble and an English craft
beer in the afternoon? The
tiny Polo Bar Caf, opposite
Liverpool Street station, is a
rarity in London: an unfussy
venue serving food and drink
24 hours-a-day. This month,
the caf expands upwards,
with the buildings rst oor
opening to diners good news
for locals who pack inside at all
hours of the day and night.
What I love about this venue
is that it attracts such a crosssection of people, from cleaners
nishing their morning shift to
bankers coming in for lunch, to
restaurant staff dropping in after
work at 2am for a drink, says its
owner, Philip Inzani, whos been

in the catering business for
20 years. He bought the Grade
II-listed venue in 2012 and has
renovated the interior. It now
features open brickwork walls,
wooden tables and is decorated
with vintage ephemera.
Its not just the dcor that had
an upgrade when Inzani took
over; the food did too. Its 85%
pork, home-cured sausages are
one reason to visit. I wanted to
serve only top-quality homemade
English dishes, all prepared
on site. Just because its
a fried breakfast, he says,
doesnt mean that quality
should be compromised.

The refurbishment of Tate Britains Rex

Whistler Restaurant was part of its recent
45m redevelopment (p. 57). The art
gallerys restaurant is so named because it
boasts an enormous mural by the legendary
artist himself. Commissioned in 1927, it was
painted by Whistler when he was a student
at Londons Slade School of Art.
Newly restored, its never looked better, so
its incredible to think that a 1928 ood saw
it submerged under two feet of Thames water.
The restaurants new menu draws on
its heritage for inspiration and head chef
Nathan Brewster has collaborated with
a food historian to serve foods that were
popular with past diners, such as globe
artichokes (a favourite of middle-class
Georgian Londoners in the late 1820s
and 1830s), and World War II favourite
smoked goose, which featured in the 1940
cookery book They Cant Ration These.
The restaurant has an award-winning
wine cellar, while its white linen tablecloths
and superb service add to the understated
elegance. A perfect venue not just for lunch,
but also for the newly added breakfast and

Take a stroll through the adorable medieval

streets of York this month and youre likely to

feminist writer Germaine Greer and former
