RP economy grows
“The services and manufacturing
sectors were the main driver of the
economy in the first quarter”
THE Philippine economic growth may have expanded at
a modest pace in the first quarter of the year on strong ser-
vices and manufacturing sectors, this is according to acting
Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Augusto B. Santos.
Santos said the economy, as measured by gross domestic
product (GDP), was projected to grow between 2.9 percent
and 3.9 percent in the first quarter of the year.
This was higher than the 0.4 percent GDP growth in the
first quarter of last year and 1.8 percent in the last quarter of
2009.
An indicator of economic performance, GDP measures the
amount of goods and services produced in a country in a
given period.
“The services and manufacturing sectors were the main
driver of the economy in the first quarter,” Santos said, who
also the director general of the National Economic and De-
velopment Authority (NEDA), said.
He said that the agriculture sector contracted between 3
percent to 3.2 percent, while the industry grew by 3.8 percent
to 5.1 percent.
The services sector, on the other hand, expanded between
4.7 percent and 5.6 percent.
Santos said the election-related spending boosted the ser-
vices sector in the first quarter.
The NEDA chief had said that initial simulations showed
that the just-concluded elections may add 0.3- percentage
points to GDP growth this year.
The Development and Budget Coordinating Committee is
projecting a GDP growth of between 2.6 percent and 3.6 per-
cent for this year.
The agriculture sector, which comprises a fifth of Philippine
GDP, contracted during the period. The Department of Agricul-
ture earlier reported that farm ouput fell by 2.84 percent in the
January to March period due to El Nino phenomenon.
The government earlier reported that the damage to agri-
culture caused by the El Niño phenomenon amounted to P8-
billion as of March.
The National Statistical Coordination Board will release
the first-quarter national income accounts on May 27.
“[We] will likely revise upwards the 2010 GDP growth
estimate of 2.6 percent to 3.6 percent after May 27,” Santos
said.
Besides election-related spending, the NEDA said gov-
ernment infrastructure spending, overseas Filipino workers’
remittances and post-typhoon construction efforts would boost
GDP this year.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) earlier projected
that the Philippine economy may grow 3.6 percent, while
the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the United
Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the
Pacific (Unescap) forecast 3.5 percent, 3.8 percent, and 3.5
percent, respectively.
In 2009, Philippine GDP grew by only 0.9 percent, or at
the low end of the official target range of 0.8 percent to 1.8
percent, making last year ’s growth the weakest since 1998.
Meanwhile, Malacañang expressed satisfaction over the
four-step improvement in the ranking of the Philippines in
the World Competitiveness Yearbook released by Switzer-
land-based IMD World Competitiveness Center.
In a press briefing, Presidential Spokesperson Ricardo
Saludo said the government felt gratified by the rating im-
provement because it has in particular strived to maintain
the country’s economic growth and to address inefficiencies
in government.
“Our economy has been among the top performing in the
world during the global recession. We were one of the few
economies that maintained our growth, which the Arroyo
administration has maintained for more than nine years,
including second quarter of 2010,” Saludo added.

ATLANTA, 2010 – A study undertaken by
Coca-Cola has uncovered the leading sources
of happiness. The global study which cov-
ers 16 countries and four continents identi-
fies what happiness means to different na-
tionalities and reveals that, despite the rapid
pace of growth in the virtual world, human
contact wins hands down when it comes to
happiness. People in all 16 countries agree
real world contact with family and partners
is a greater source of joy (77%) than virtual
world alternatives.
Supporting this notion that human, rather
than virtual interaction is a greater source of
pleasure, the biggest highlights of the day
include catching up with loved ones in the
evening (39%), eating with the family (22%)
and chatting to friends or colleagues (17%)
in the day. Modern alternatives such as watch-
ing TV (14%), connecting with others online
(5%) and receiving the day’s first text mes-
sage (2%) paled in comparison.
“The results of the Coca-Cola Happiness
Barometer show that staying connected with
friends and family remains an important source
of happiness for people around the world, and
that this holds true across all continents and
nationalities.” Said Cristina Bondolowski,
Senior Global Brand Director, Coca-Cola, The
Coca-Cola Company, “Despite the online social
networking phenomenon, nothing beats quality
time with loved ones or simple pleasures such
as sharing a Coke with our nearest and dear-
est to bring happiness in our lives.”
The results also show that, despite the
global economic woes, overall global happi-
ness levels are high, with over two thirds of
people (67%) declaring that they are satis-
fied with their lives.
When we do need cheering up, 38% of us
turn to a night out with friends and over one
in five (22%) will give or receive a big, warm
hug!
To help interpret the results, Coca-Cola
invited Dr Richard Stevens, MA, Ph D, a so-
cial psychologist and author of Personal
Worlds and Understanding the Self, who spe-
cializes in happiness and wellbeing, to pro-
vide his perspective on the findings. In his
analysis, he noted that “While it is important
to have enough money to live, income is a
fairly irrelevant contributor to happiness.
Without relationships, love, family or friend-
ship, most people will not be content and no
amount of money can fill this void.”
Striving for celebrity did not come out as
a popular source of happiness in the study.
The results showed that, globally, people
wouldn’t choose fame and fortune to bring
happiness, instead citing travelling around the
world (37%), volunteering to help others (26%)
and meeting the love of their life (12%) as
being the key contributors to happiness.
“Despite our celebrity driven culture, fame
is not likely in itself to be a primary source
of happiness” added Dr Stevens. “Our real
happiness depends much more on our basic
sense of self, and connecting with other people,
especially through love, care and kindness.”
The study also found that drinking a Coke
really does contribute to making people happy!
56% of people cited the taste of Coca-Cola
as something that makes them smile.
“Coca-Cola provides simple moments of
pleasure throughout the day. Through this
study we wanted to understand what else our
consumers reach for in their quest for happi-
ness.” Added Bondolowski, “We were espe-
cially pleased to see that it’s the great taste
of Coke that is still putting a smile on faces
around the world, as it has done for nearly
125 years.”
