Workshop.
MSET is pleased to provide hands-on pre-conference and conference workshops for
education stakeholders interested in ongoing professional development and
professional enrichment. Packed with practical strategies, the 2010 MSET workshops
are designed to provide in-depth exploration of current topics in 21st century teaching
and learning and emerging technologies.

Enrollment is limited, so register early for best selection.

All workshops will be held at the Baltimore Convention Center (BCC). The fee for each
half-day workshop is $50, and the full-day workshop is $100.

(1) Easy Animation for Time-starved Classrooms on a Shoestring
Budget

You will be amazed how easily you can create cool animations using limited time and
resources (iMovie and PowerPoint) to produce commercials, demonstrations, or
presentations. This technique is easy, fun, and fast! You will learn claymation (use
clay and a digital camera to produce animated titles), photo-editing (remove the
background of your photos), still-frame animation (create time-elapsed photos), and
iMovie animation (adjust time and sequence of still frames to animate your photos.

Prerequisites: Participants should be comfortable with basic use of the computer. No
prior knowledge required.
Purpose and Objectives: This workshop will provide hands-on training to produce easy
and creative animated projects. Participants will: 1. Use a digital camera, and clay to
produce claymation titling effects. 2. Use PhotoShop Elements to extract a photo from
its background. 3. Use PowerPoint to create animated photos. 4. Import photos and
adjust their time and sequence to produce an animated iMovie production.

(2) Use What You Have: The Power of Digital Media

Learn how to use available online video and media to enhance teaching and learning.
This hands-on session will help you to select appropriate media and learn various
techniques, including digital storytelling, for instructional integration. You will be able
to make connections between content and media to help students meet their
educational goals and help teachers enrich the student learning experience.

Prerequisites: Participants should be comfortable with basic use of the computer. No
prior knowledge required.

Purpose and Objectives: Participants in this session will:

* Learn how to select appropriate media based on individual needs, content area, and
grade level.
*Explore educational uses of digital storytelling and use free tools to create a digital
story.
* Make connections between content and media to help students meet their
educational goals and enrich the student learning experience.
* Learn how to access free media tools and practice using the technology.

(3) Online Posters Using Edu.Glogster

With the increasing focus toward the integration of technology into instruction to
increase student skills and participation in the digital age, this class is focused not
only toward introducing web 2.0 programs to participants but building up their
confidence in trying and evaluating new programs as they continually become
available on the web. Glogster (Edu) offers a great way to integrate technology and
inspire students in the classroom. This workshop will offer hands-on practice through a
wiki to learn how to use a Glogster in edu.glogster.com and develop a lesson plan to
integrate the online poster into your classroom. Together we will develop and share
our projects through a wiki to produce a substantial set of resources to use in the
classroom. Make sure you bring a laptop to participate fully in the class.

As an educator, do you wish you had a more efficient and effective way to
communicate with parents? Do you currently have a system for communicating with
parents and the community? Have you considered online communication? If so, this is
the session for you.

Be introduced to various easy technology tools and systems that will keep parents and
community members informed of news, accomplishments, and events happening in
your classroom or school building. This hands-on session will provide you with time to
explore and practice using these tools. You will also learn techniques and strategies
for using free Web 2.0 tools to maximize communication.

(5) Arts Integration Across the Curriculum

This hands-on workshop will give participants an opportunity to discover and explore
ways to use computer technology in arts integration. From simple activities to more
complex projects, participants will view student samples of projects using clay
animation, song-writing, sound exploration, and digital images and then try some of
the activities themselves.

Audience: Intermediate
Levels: Pre K, K - 2, 3 - 5, 6 - 8, 9 - 12
Prerequisites: Participants need the latest version of Flash and Java installed on their
computers. Participants should be able to navigate web browsers and be able to
download and save files from the Internet. They should have some experience using
technology in the classroom.

Purpose and Objectives: Educators will understand the benefits of integrating


technology and the arts into their curriculum. Participants will see how students can
display their understanding of content knowledge in a creative way that will lead to
retention of major concepts.
The teachers will:
*Locate online resources supporting arts and technology integration
*View examples of arts-integrated projects
*Begin planning for future arts-and-technology-integrated lessons and projects

(6) So You Want to be A Sound Designer?

Participants will learn how to use sound effects and background music to make lessons
come alive for students in all subjects.

Level: K - 2, 3 - 5, 6 - 8, 9 - 12, Adult/Post Secondary
Prerequisites: Basic computer skills; ability to cut, copy, paste

Purpose and Objectives: Through this hands-on session:


*Participants will be able to experience recording, mixing, and editing of sound effects
and production music, in order to insert sound designs into a lesson that uses
technology.
*Participants will see a demonstration of the use of software and web sites that
provide free access to music and sound effects for classroom use.
*Participants will take away ideas for classroom implementation with both teacher-
constructed and student-constructed projects.
