Dancer is a beautiful girl but timid. She is a mature adult,

and has been at the shelter because of her shyness. She
loves to hide in her little cat snuggle cube as shown in the
picture, where she feels warm and safe. She does like to
be pet on her head, and will purr! She likes to occasionally
come out and explore, but when she feels insecure, she
jumps back in her house. Dancer would do best in a home
without other animals, or with another calm, older cat.
She needs a home where she will be able to hide and feel
safe. As an older cat, she would love a quiet home to
retire to, and where she may be able to feel herself.

SALEMS SHOPPE OFF BROADWAY THRIFT STORE

IS CELEBRATING ITS TWELFTH ANNIVERSARY.

THE HIGHLIGHT ACTING TROUPE is sponsoring a 2

week theater program for children 6-14 at the Brittonkill Central School District Auditorium from July 1122. The program costs $200, and runs from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. Registration and a deposit is due by May 29. In the morning the
children will be divided into two groups. Ages 6-9 will be
going on a story book adventure where they will learn the
fundamentals of acting. Children 10-14 will be creating their
own character and bring it to life. In theafternoon the children will be working on their performance.
They will be
learning acting, music, dance, improve and set
design.
The last day will include a luncheon for the families followed

Safety course on Thursday, July 21st at 1:00 pm at the Cornell
Cooperative Extension Education Center at 377 Schroon River
Road in Warrensburg, NY. Mike Burns from Professional Forestry Services will present an instructional program for the
occasional chain saw user on safe operation and risk mitigation. This session is intended to be an introduction to chain
saw use and is not adequate preparation for felling standing

LUNCH, LEARN & PLAY, A VERY SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL AREA CHILDREN. Lunch, Learn & Play summer enrichment program offered at the Salem Courthouse Community Center is a free summer program for all area youth, kindergarten through sixth grade. It
serves about 145 children from Salem and the towns nearby each summer. It is a six-week program, five days per week and six hours per day. Combined with the Town of Salems morning
Swim Program, it gives working parents a safe, healthy, educational place for their children to
enjoy for the entire day. The 2016 program will commence on Tuesday, July 5 and run through
Friday, August 12. LL&P takes place in the Youth Barn and on the side yard at the Courthouse site.
Offsite venues include field trip sites and on community walks. The youth enjoy a nutritious lunch
and snack each day prepared in the Battenkill Kitchen. They visit the Courthouse Community
Garden and local farms to see where their food comes from. They spend most of their time outdoors
in the fresh air with great teachers and counselors, making new friends and practicing good social
skills. Local individuals and organizations present over 80 educational, creative, informational,
fun activities for the children over the summer.

HAY QUALITY IS A KEY COMPONENT TO ANIMAL PERFORMANCE AND PROPER

HAY STORAGE IS A KEY COMPONENT TO HAY QUALITY. Hay loss can be expected,
even under a barn, so mitigation and risk management are the keys to protecting as much of your
investment as possible. Once bales have cured they should be taken to a permanent storage area
and stacked. The cutting, baling and hauling represents much of the cost of baled hay. Depending on yield, a 1500-pound bale can cost up to $45 to cut, roll and transport. If the bale is valued
at $100, the forage in the bale is worth $55. It makes sense to protect bales and the $45 per-bale
investment as much as possible,.
When bales are stored outside and uncovered, weathering may affect hay quality up to 12 inches
deep. The depth will vary based on factors such as regional climate, the bales density, the
storage location and methods of protection used to mitigate weathering.
The general expectation, however, is there will be a 4- to 6-inch weathered layer for bales stored
outside on the ground. This is important because the outer portions of bales make up a substantial portion of the bales volume. Bales left in fields are exposed to the elements in all directions.
If three inches of the outside surface of a 5-foot by 6-foot bale are spoiled, it represents about 30
percent of the hay in that bale. In a 1,500-pound a 30 percent loss represents 450 pounds of hay.
Producers should remove bales from fields as soon as possible to prevent damage to the hay and
to the field. Storing bales properly reduces the number of exposed surfaces and can reduce
losses, especially if shelter is provided. Storing hay in barns can be a cost-effective method of
protecting it for some producers. Barn storage protects the hays nutritional value and aesthetics. Plastic wraps can also be used to reduce losses.
Hay stored outside is subject to wetting and drying cycles that degrade and leach nutrients from
bales. Over time, this causes the fiber component of the forage, which is indigestible, to represent a larger percentage of the bales dry weight. The loss of total digestible nutrients can often
be as much as 15 to 20 percent in weathered bales.
When drying in the field, place bales in a north-south orientation and southern exposure. Set
bales in rows so that the flat sides are touching and the round sides are separated. This keeps rain
from ponding on top of bales.
Some producers store bales in the mushroom style, where bottom bales are on end; this style
provides less protection than end-to-end, especially if the rows are tight to each other. Its been
found that the bottom bales also tend to act as a wick and draw moisture from the ground.
It is better to have not made a hay crop at all and lost all of the pre-harvest expenses than to make
a crop, spend the money to cut and bale it, and let it waste away losing all its feeding value and
negatively affecting regrowth because the bales were not handled, moved, and stored properly
becaused in the end you will lose more money with that scenario.
