WCDMA IPA-RNC RU40 Delta of Changes

1. Introduction to WCDMA RAN rel. RU40
1.1 Overview of WCDMA RAN RU40
RU40 offers innovative solutions and features that are aimed at improving:

Capacity
Product portfolio
User experience
Network efficiency
Multi-RAT solutions

1.2 Introduction to RU40 features

FEATURE

RAN2124: HSPA 128 Users per

Cell

RAN1913: High Speed

Cell_FACH

Description
With this feature 128 simultaneous HSPA serving users (HSDPA and
HSUPA) per cell are supported. This feature increases the number of
serving HSPA (HSDPA and HSUPA) users per cell in CELL_DCH state to
128. It mainly deals with the BaseBand capacity enhancements
enhancem
brought
with the new HW and SW. The BTS provides resources and handles the
increased number of users, while the RNC takes care of enhanced
admission and overload control.
With this feature, the HSPA is used in Cell_FACH state. With High Speed
Cell_FACH more users can be supported in Cell_FACH state and smooth
and faster data transmission can be provided for users not requiring large
data volumes. Services for sending frequent but small packets can be
handled more efficiently.
ntly. The reason behind introducing the specified
enhancements in Cell_FACH states are the quick HSPA access (improved
setup times) and improving performance of the legacy R99 RACH/FACH
channels.

RAN2451: Fast Dormancy

Profiling

The RAN2451: Fast Dormancy Profiling feature identifies smartphones

causing unnecessary signaling load. Identified smartphones are moved to
Cell_PCH with shorter timers to avoid signaling connection release. In
addition the data threshold for common channel
channe use is higher, to avoid
Cell_DCH setup just for a keep-alive
alive message.

RAN2494: Fast Cell_PCH

Switching

This feature reduces the state transition time from Cell_PCH and
Cell_FACH.

Application Aware RAN

This feature introduces dynamic service or application prioritization for

HSPA scheduling. Prioritization is done dynamically between bearers,
according to the service actually used in a bearer. This feature also
introduces dynamic prioritization of UL traffic for single NRT RAB users.

WCDMA IPA-RNC RU40 Delta of Changes

RAN1877: End-user
user Experienced This feature introduces new counters for end
end-user statistics for each SPI
DL Throughput
(scheduling priority indicator) class for HSDPA traffic.

RAN2717: Smart LTE Layering

The RAN2717: Smart LTE Layering feature introduces support for the
redirection of active LTE-capable
capable UE from WCDMA to LTE. In the early
LTE-supporting UE, redirection is well-supported
supported and thus preferred. LTE
cell reselection for the UE in idle mode, Cell_PCH
Cell_
state, or URA_PCH state
in the WCDMA layer has been enabled by the RAN2067: LTE Interworking
feature.

RAN2435: SRVCC from LTE and

CSFB with HO

Single radio voice call continuity (SRVCC) from LTE function allows for
voice over IP (VoIP) call handover from the LTE to the WCDMA as a
normal CS voice call. Also CS
Fallback from LTE function is supported.

RAN2302: Dynamic HSUPA BLER

RAN971: HSUPA Downlink

Physical Channel Power
control
RAN1910: Flexible RLC in UL

RAN2302: Dynamic HSUPA BLER allows the operator to define different

BLER targets for:
HSUPA peak rates
HSUPA cell capacity
HSUPA user throughput at cell edge
The power of HSUPA downlink control channels is adjusted based on the
required
power level at the UE.
Feature RAN1910: Flexible RLC in UL belongs to basic software. This
feature allows the use of variable RLC PDU sizes up to 1505 bytes for the
WCDMA uplink (UL), which reduces the overhead in the RLC layer in the
uplink; this, in turn, enables higher HSUPA peak rates.

2. WCDMA IPA-RNC
RNC changes
2.1Introduction to WCDMA IPA-RNC
IPA
RU40 introduces the following IPA
IPA-RNC product improvements:
RAN2538: 1000000 RRC Connected UEs in RNC feature that allows the RNC2600 to support more
smartphones and always-on
on applications in the network. This protects the operators' investments and
reduces the effort on network optimization for smartphones.
Reduced
educed software upgrade time (for more information, see RAN2528: 1 Hour RNC Release Software
Upgrade Time)

WCDMA IPA-RNC RU40 Delta of Changes

2.2 RN7.0 hardware changes
This section summarizes the differences in the hardware implementation between releases RN6.0 and
RN7.0.

Removed plug-in units

Plug-in unit CDSP-C
C is removed from RNC450 and RNC196 on RN7.0 level. It is mandatory to upgrade
all CDSP-C plug-in
in units with CDSP
CDSP-DH plug-in
in units before upgrading SW to RN7.0 level. Not
applicable for Claro Colombia
