A revitalization project for a neighborhood

shopping center created a new World

Class Built Environment. A series of future
plans including a 5 year and 50 year plan
for the shopping center and a 50 year
neighborhood development plan will create
places for people to live, work, play, and
learn in the Whitehills community.
The current shopping center was examined
to determine what structures and businesses
could be incorporated into a new design.
New retail shops, restaurants, small
businesses and residential complexes were
combined to create a mixed-use shopping
center to connect and serve the East Lansing
area.
A connection from the Carriage Hills
Shopping Center was made to the East
Lansing trail system allowing for nonmotorized connectivity between numerous
communities in the mid-Michigan area.

A research project lead to a proposed

redesign for Forest Akers East Golf
Course on the campus of Michigan State
University that would reduce the amount
of fresh water used for irrigation and
increase the natural areas of habitat on the
property.
A variety of techniques were implemented
into this redesign focusing around
fresh water conservation and habitat
preservation. Irrigation water would
become a filtered and re-usable source
from on-site retention ponds. An increase
in native and natural areas decreases
the amount of maintained turf therefore
decreasing the amount of irrigation water
needed. Both concepts will continue to
grow the ecology of the golf course into
the future.

Forest Akers East Golf Course Redesign - Ecological Restoration & Re-routing

The image to the left is a proposed irrigation plan using hole #10 as an example.
This new plan utilizes a double-row system in the fairways. Heads are placed
along the edges of the fairway. These heads are only a 180 degree rotating head.
This allows only the fairways to be watered.
Heads are then placed on the edge of the rough. These heads will be placed so
that they just reach the fairway. This allows only the rough to be watered.
The ability to water either the fairway or rough stems from different grasses
being in the rough and fairways. The different types of grasses have different
drought tolerances therefore requiring different amounts of water. In the end,
this will save on irrigation costs and allow the right amount of water to be
applied it in a desired area.
