ITEC Portfolio Artifact Reflection

Standard 2.5 Differentiation:

Candidates model and facilitate the design and implementation of technology- enhanced
learning experiences making appropriate use of differentiation, including adjusting
content, process, product, and learning environment based upon an analysis of learner
characteristics, including readiness levels, interests, and personal goals.
1. Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was/were
your individual contribution(s)?
This artifact was created for ITEC 7430 as an Internet Lesson Plan. I actually took a
lesson that I used in class the year before and added more Web 2.0 tools that students
could use. The entire lesson could be accessed in Google Classroom and the students
could work on the project entirely outside of the classroom if they wanted to. My
students participated in this series of lessons after instruction over the Human Body
Systems.

2. Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it
is placed.
This artifact demonstrates how I have learned how to differentiate a lesson because at the
beginning of the year I had all of my students complete a learning styles survey and then
I taught them how to study best with their learning style I also helped them identify their
strengths and weaknesses based on their learning styles. I will have students with
different learning styles in each of the groups so that they can all complement each other
in their groups. Each group was able to choose what organ system they were going to
complete their project over and what harmful substance can affect that organ system. The
student groups were also able to decide what type of presentation they were going to
create (news broadcast, commercial script with story line, infomercial, cartoon, etc.). The
students were also in groups based on how advanced their knowledge was with
technology, this helped with troubleshooting because the students taught each other and
basically multiplied the teacher in the classroom. The students had the opportunity to
meet professionals with knowledge on their topics. They will have the opportunity to
enrich their project be further by communicating with these professionals in a variety of
ways including the class blog.

3. What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to
improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact?
I learned that when giving students various options to choose from the instructor needs to
be familiar with all of the options that students can use for the project. When it is
completely open for students to choose from I found it hard for me to help with trouble
shooting when a students was using either software or a tool that I was unfamiliar with. I
quickly found out that students need various options to match their learning style and
provide student choice however, the teacher needs to be familiar with the tools offered.
The only thing that I would do differently is with the editing in iMovie it was very hard to
use a green screen and insert images as the back ground. We had a hard time with this
and it was an unexpected problem that I was not adequately prepared for at the time.
4. How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement,
faculty development, or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
The day the project is due we had a film festival where my whole class watched all of the
videos that my four classes submitted. We rated each video in terms of if they learned
something new from the video, and if it made them think on a scale of 1 to 5. The top
videos were shown on the school news for the entire school to see. The students were
excited about the project and engaged with the entire process. The students became the
producers and enjoyed interviewing professionals outside of school. This lesson was
effective because the students were able to take what they learned about how the organ
systems work together and investigate the negative effects smoking, alcohol, drugs, etc.
can have on the organ systems. The students became emotionally attached to their cause
and wanted their peers to understand the consequences of these choices on their bodies.
Middle School is generally when students face peer pressure and are consumed with the
changes and development that their own bodies are making. That is why this lesson
connects with this age group of students so well and will hopefully have an impact of

future choices that they or their friends make. This artifact was assessed using google
classroom and as with most projects the results were better the second year that I did this.
I think that is due to the fact that the students had student examples to go by and my
comfortability with the project having already done this the previous year.
