Dear Corporate Representative,
On behalf of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Arizona State University, we would like to thank you for
your interest and support of our community. Your sponsorship helps us achieve our goals and activities. We appreciate
your time and support of our members academic and professional development. This corporate package will give you
the opportunity to learn more about our organization. We have outlined our mission, goals and major events for the
2016-2017 academic year. With your sponsorship, you are promoting diverse opportunities that will be reflected in the
growth of our chapter at Arizona State University.
In order to understand the significance of SHPE de ASUs impact on its members, it is important to learn the history of
the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). SHPE was originally created in 1974 by a group of engineers in
Los Angeles, California. Their founding principle was to cultivate a national organization that would provide engineering
role models for the Hispanic community. What started as a two-student organization has, over the past forty-one years,
blossomed into a vast social network of thousands of Hispanic engineers from all over the country. SHPE prides itself in
providing companies with high quality Hispanic professional engineers.
As part of the executive board, we believe our purpose is to provide essential resources and guidance to develop a
community of motivated students. Our members have the opportunity to be themselves, gain friendships, and find their
potential as future engineers within our chapter. This year we will build upon this base by following SHPEs five pillars
for our chapters success. SHPE National defines these five pillars as Academic Development, Community Outreach,
Chapter Development, Leadership Development, and Professional Development. Our goal is to create activities that
target each of these pillars so our members gain a greater organizational knowledge and help them achieve success in
their personal lives.
We strongly believe that philanthropy and leadership involvement are the gateways to personal growth. When this
organization was founded, it sought to create true leaders and professionals who could serve as role models to society.
This is why SHPE de ASU strives to develop competitive, professional, and well-rounded individuals. We seek to give
our members the tools they need to reach their respective goals. This exceptional pool of talent creates a workforce
comprised of highly motivated, productive, and astute leaders.
As a nonprofit organization, we need your support to reach new levels of success. We ask you to consider joining SHPE
de ASU in molding an ambitious workforce so that in the future, we may become the best leaders for your company. By
becoming a corporate sponsor, your company will have priority in all programs and events hosted by our chapter, and
your presence on campus will influence not only our members but other engineering students. We look forward to
having you as corporate sponsor and joining our familia this coming academic year.
Sincerely,

Mara Jos Quezada,

President

SHPE de ASU History

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Arizona State University, known as SHPE de ASU, was
established in 1982 by five students who became aware that only a small number of Hispanics were
majoring in engineering. They quickly realized that the few who were in the field did not collectively work
together to encourage the success of one another, nor did they formulate a networking system. Those five
students soon grew in numbers, and SHPE de ASU has since been a respected student chapter in both the
SHPE community and at Arizona State University.
In 1992, the SHPE de ASU partnered with the SHPE Phoenix professional chapter to submit a proposal to
host the National Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. The National Technical Career Conference, which was
SHPEs national conference original name, was always held in Los Angeles, California until the proposal
was accepted and the event was held in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona. This was the first National
Conference held outside of the Los Angeles area. The conference has since changed its name and thanks
to the initiative taken by SHPE de ASU, the event has now been held in various cities across the country.
SHPE de ASU has continued to grow and provide unity to our Hispanic Engineering students while fulfilling
its mission of empowering the Hispanic community to realize its own potential in becoming future leaders
themselves. This organization was founded with the purpose of increasing the number of Hispanics
entering the engineering and science fields while retaining the current percentage of Hispanic engineering
students attending college. SHPE de ASU has continuously sought to maintain a community for Hispanic
engineering students by providing a network that encourages them to become successful professional
engineers and serve as leaders in the Hispanic community.
SHPE de ASU is a proactive, dynamic student society that is visible in the community. Every year,
members take part in events that encourage high school and disadvantaged students to consider careers
in STEM fields. SHPE de ASU members volunteer by presenting various academic outreach programs and
serving as role models for K-12 students . They have also mentored and assisted in the First Lego Robotics
League and other STEM competitions. Actively engaged SHPE members have a higher sense of belonging
and community within the university. Therefore, a strong network promotes retention of our Hispanic
students. We are proud of the outstanding leadership and community service that SHPE de ASU has put
forth and will continue to do so for years to come.

Demographics and Statistics

SHPE de ASU is one of nearly 60 engineering clubs at Arizona State. Our organization is known for its
active presence at engineering activities such as Night of the Open Door, DiscoverE Day, and the Fulton
Student Organization and Resource Fair, among others. In addition to its active involvement within the Ira
A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, SHPE is known for its networking with industry and the K-12 community.
During spring 2015, SHPE de ASU was awarded the
Outstanding Fulton Student Organization Community
Builder Awards.
This past year, SHPE de ASU was recognized as the
Outstanding Fulton Student
Organization of the Year for 2015-2016. The success of our organizations would not be possible without
the guidance and support of our Advisor Carrie Robinson, who was awarded the
Outstanding Fulton
Student Organization Staff Advisor Award
, as well as, the Diversity and Inclusion Award.

During the 2015-2016 academic year, SHPE de ASU had 183 general members. Of those members, 68
were active chapter paid members, and 74 were national paid members. The impact SHPE de ASU has on
our active members is evident. Our organizations community is comprised of diverse backgrounds (see
Figures 1, 2 and 3). This diversity has allowed us to give our members a first-hand experience in what a
home away from home really is. By taking advantage of SHPEs resources, our members have attended
regional and national conferences, as well as attained internship and research opportunities.
