Introduction: Counselling is a one-to-one relationship between a counsellor and a

counsellee, where the counsellors help the counsellees to examine and realize their

problems and explore the various options available to them to take their own

decisions. Counselling can be done for both work related and personal problems

that would include coping with crisis, conflict management, improving morale,

personal efficacy and relationships. Counseling sessions are carried out in a private

setting and the frequency and the duration vary depending upon the client’s needs

and accessibility, and on the counselling model used.

Counselling can be taken a range of different formats: There are many different

types of counselling that are available in a range of different formats. Counselling

can take place:

• Face-to-face,

• Over the telephone, or

• By email.

Generally, counselling is provided face-to-face and through the telephone but in

recent years it’s updated by video-conferencing and online counselling is the hottest

trends.

You also may be offered counselling as a single session, as a short-term course of

sessions for a few weeks or months, or as a long-term arrangement that lasts for

many months or years, some cases depends on your positive result.

2
Workplace counselling: Workplace counselling is even more crucial in the current

business setting of knowledge economy, globalization and cut-throat competition for

talent. An organization can earn competitive advantage by through workplace

counselling as it is a very powerful tool for maximizing human resources, improving

work performance, and attracting and retaining quality workforce. It has a vital

impact upon the organizational productivity. Therefore, it is a precondition of an

organization to enable the supervisor/manager to counsell the workforce, whenever

there is a disagreement in the employee behavior from his/her normal attitude and

behavior. Companies that have people who are trained in counselling are more

efficient and effective in handling people issues and have increased workforce

retention levels. The success of any counseling lies in bringing about a positive

change in the behavior of the counselee and ensuring that he/she becomes

independent in solving his/her problem. Counseling aims to improve workers’

psychological health, makes them feel comfortable about themselves and with other

people, and enables them to meet the demands of their life and career. The broader

aim of counseling is to assist the employee in understanding the holistic nature of

life which encompasses psychological, physical and social characteristics.

History of workplace counselling: historical development of employee counselling

gives an insight into the various reasons for establishing counselling provision.

The human relationship era:

The history of work place counselling begins in the US and intertwined with the

arrival in industry of medical, psychiatric and social work provision.

3
Opinion of these two psychologists Oberer and Lee (1986) trace the relationship

between industry and management recourses to early nineteen century where the

basis for the relationship between management and workers was first laid.

In the nineteen 60s to 70s many companies mainly in the US introduced EAP

(employee assistance problem) to address problem relating to alcoholism and drug

addiction.

Counseelling in the workplace, specifically, has existed since the early 1900s though

in quite different formats from those we understand by workplace counselling

today. By 1913 there were about 2,000 welfare workers in industry (Carter, 1977).

For instance, from 1920s to 1930s in the UK prior to introduction of NHS (national

health system) many organizations e.g.Rowntrees, Cadbury, felt it appropriate to

take on issues which affected to employee health such as housing, welfare officers

and so on.

Role of counselling now a day: Role of counselling is very important in this present

world as people want to get everything near to hand without having any problem.

Therefore in this present world counselling are using many sector within the

organization, companies, commercial and noncommercial business service as well as

in the government service as it has been given them a vital benefit and succession.

Role of counselling now a day are involved in many ways such as,

Role of counseling now a day in the education: School social workers are available

to counsell students and help them develop personally and academically. School

social workers are the link between teachers, students and parents.

4
For instance, in the class when students fully don’t get the summery of the

composition because small duration of class time period or unable to attend the

class. In this cases many college and university does counselling with all the teacher

about how they can provide extra classes or extra tutors in order to assist student to

pass the exam and gain knowledge as well as to keep the institution on the top list

within other competitive institution.

Role of counselling now a day in the qualification: School social workers usually

have at least a bachelor's degree. Increasingly, school social workers are required to

have a master's degree. School social workers must be able to communicate with

teachers regarding student behavior.

Role of counselling now a day in the significance: School social workers help parents

address behavior problems with students. Issues such as teen pregnancy are

discussed among students and school social workers.

Role of counselling now a day in the consideration: School social workers must

value confidentiality. Being able to maintain your emotions, cultivate relationships

and being sensitive to the needs of others are invaluable traits of a school social

worker.

Role of counselling in the home life: In some cases, students may have explanatory

circumstances at home. In cases where there is neglect, abuse or other severe

problems at home, school social workers may serve as counsel to help students

handle.

5
And also many others’s sight counselling is keeping very important role for

example, social security worker, kind’s therapy and many more.

Advantage of workplace counselling: Counselling has been given us a great

privileged as people are using it on every each of single organization and getting

benefit on it.

If we have no idea especially when counselling is needed at workplace? Then we can

have overall idea from the following kind of symptom those symptom are, while

employee are suffering mental stress, work lord, constant pressure to meet deadline,

carrier problem, responsibility and accountability, bad interpersonal relation with

supervisor and subordinates and problem in adjusting to the organizational culture.

Above all those problems can be solved by workplace counselling as it can be given

the way of solution. Such as helping the individual to understand and help himself,

helping in better decision making, alternate solution to problems, coping with the

situation and the stress, reduce discrimination and so on.

The main benefit of counselling is that it helps you to have a life which you can more

fully enjoy and appreciate. It can help you to become the sort of person you want to

be. It can help you to more deeply enjoy your important organizational task.

• Workplace counselling can help you to feel better yourself in the duty.

• Workplace counselling can help you to feel more at peace, more comfortable

and more secure in the world with other competitor.

6
• It can help you to reduce stress in the workplace which promotes physical

health too.

• Work through problems with a skilled, and feeling professional.

• It also identifies your goals, ambition, and then you can get support the kind

of life you would like to have.

• It can show you to learn new behavior and responses with your colleague and

others which can help you to achieve your goal.

• Workplace counselling give you the ways of establish and techniques in order

to be reached on your goal and ambition.

• You can understand your own thoughts, feelings and responses better in the

organization by workplace counselling.

• It can give you safe and friendly atmosphere in your operation with your all

employee and others.

According to research all kind of articles and business companies, and universities

opinion showing that counselling can reduce level of stress in the workplace by more

than 50 per cent.

It also discovered that:

• Counselling in the workplace can also reduce level of sickness and absence by

between 25-50%.

• Workplace counselling is effective in relieve the symptoms of both anxiety

and depression.

7
• Successful results can be achieved after as little sessions of using counselling.

• Workplace counselling definitely covers it’s financial cost.

• Improve mental health almost 70% of clients.

• Reduce rates of sickness/absence.

• It will show the workplace performance.

Disadvantage of workplace counselling: though workplace counselling has a wide

range of advantage but it has disadvantage too. Let’s say you are providing

telephone counselling and your clients tells you that they are viewing pornography

on the company computer, which is against the organization’s policy.

Though counselling reduce cost for a company but it also costly to carry a couselling

in the operation or organization as you need to spend a competitive capital for

counsellors.

Many prestigious and Independence Company or operation don’t like to have

counselling as they want be succeed by the way they have been doing their

succession.

On the other hand, some of the stale company does not want to take risky by using

new procedure in there operation as they do not really know what is it and how it

works in the operation.

8
Conclusion: Having read the various research presented in this project,,,, I strongly

believe that counselling really does work in the workplace. Therefore more or less

counselling is using all over the world including chain, franchisor, independent,

commercial and noncommercial industry.

Last but not least, people often dismiss counselling as

Something for “crazy people”?. - For instance, Counseling is NOT a place that

people go to find out if they’re "crazy" but rather to get support because

sometimes the world can seem pretty “crazy.”

A crutch for people who are just too weak to handle life! Or, where you go and get

analyzed by somebody and then hope something changes for the better. -For

instance, Counseling is NOT a crutch for weak people. Rather, it is a vehicle for

strong people who decide to face their challenges directly rather than continue in

the more frightened and “escape”-oriented ways that others use to deal with

difficulties.

Professional help for people with really major problems?. For instance,

Counseling is NOT an activity where one expert analyzes the client.

Rather, it is an activity where counselor and client work as a team to make positive

changes in the client's approach to life. Finally, counselling can prove to be

significant help to modify the behavior of employees and more so to re-enforce

the desired behaviors and improve and increase the productivity.
