LESSON PLAN High School Algebra 8th grade

A. Standards:

Student should know definition of quadratic equation.

Student should know how analyze quadratic equation.
Student should remember how to apply square root.
INTASC
Standard #5: Application of Contest
The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use different
perspective to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and
collaborative problem solving.
Standard #7: Planning for Instruction. The teacher plans instruction that
supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon
knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross disciplinary skills, and
pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.
High School Algebra 8th grade, 28 students, 2hours
class.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.REI.A.2
Solve simple rational and radical equations in one variable, and give
examples showing how extraneous solutions may arise.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.SSE.B.3.B
Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum
or minimum value of the function it defines concentrating on solving
quadratic equations by completing the square.

1. Objectives
SWBAT define maximum or minimum value of the function.
SWBAT memorize the formula for c in quadratic equations.
SWBAT to apply formula for c in to quadratic equations.
SWBAT analyze simple rational and radical equations.
Teacher will show students how to solve equations and quadratic
equations, then students will do couple examples with the teacher. After
that students will work in groups to solve equations.
B. Materials/Equipment: handouts, school text book for 8th grade.
C. Procedures:

First lets check your skills from last lesson.

On the board teacher write
Check your skills: find the square
1). (d-4)2
2). (x+11)2 3). (k-8)2
Factor:
4). B2+10b+25 5).t2+14+49 6) n2-18n+81

Today lesson is solving quadratic equations by completing the square.

Lets start by completing the square:

ax2+b+(b/2)2 0
ax2+b+(b/2)2 0
Examples completing the square: (teacher shows students how to solve
square)
1) x212x+n0
n=(b/2)2
n=(12/2) 2
n=(-6) 2
n=36
x2-12x+36
(x-6)(x-6)
x=6
2) x2+9x=136
c=(b/2)2 c=(9/2)2
x2+9x+(9/2)2=136+(9/2)2
x2+9x+(9/2)2= 136+81/4
x2+9x+(9/2)2=625/4
squared

1)find c (b/2) 2
2) add c to both sides

(x+9/2)2 = 625/4
x+1/9= +-25/2
x+9/2=25/2 and x+9/2 =-25/2
-9/2
-9/2
-9/2 -9/2
__________
__________
x=16/2
x= -36/2
x=8
x= -17

3) simplify the right side

4)rewrite the trinomial (left) as a binomial
5)find the square of both sides
6) set up 2 equations

3)
x2-20x+32 = 0 not a perfect square
-32 -32
___________
x2-20 = -32
Find c:
c=(b/2)2 c=(-20/2)2 c=(-10)2 c=100
x2-20x+100= -32 +100

Sabina Smith
(x-10)2 = 68
x-10 = 8.246
+10 +10
_________
X=18.246

x-10 = -8.246
+10 +10
__________
X=1.754

4)
x 2- 6x = 10
C= (b/2)2 C=(-6/2)2 C=9
X2-6X+9=19
(X-3)2 = 19
X-3= + - 4.359
X 3 = -4.539
+3 +3
_______________
X= -1.359

D. Closure:

X-3 = 4.539
+3 +3
__________
X=7.359

Students will make groups of 2 students in each group and will

solve expels from book page 30. Students have 30 min to solve 30
examples. Teacher will be walking around the desks looking how students
are solving the problem and helping ones that need help. After students are
done solving problems teacher will call each student to the board to solve
one example that they were working on.
In the end of the class teacher gives students homework from the book
p.31-33 due tomorrow.
