Teaching as a Profession
Lesson 2: Formulating Your Philosophy of Education
Michael Zophiel Alberto

Outline:
I. Introduction

III. Insights
I. Introduction
There is a lot of philosophy in education that influences us as a person and as a
teacher. These Philosophies serve as our guide on how to deal with other people
including our students, colleagues, parents and administrators.
In this lesson, you will find out what does a Philosophy of Education include. After
knowing this, you are encouraged to formulate your personal philosophy in regards
with the teaching profession.
II. Discussion
For sure as a person you believe in some existing Philosophy. You may agree
with some Philosophy and you may not agree in other philosophy. Sometimes you
are having a hard time to articulate very well your own Philosophy that is why you
should put it in a form of writing.
What does a Philosophy of Education include?
1. The human person, the learner in particular and the educated person.
> You should know the nature of your students. Observe how they behave, think,
feel, and also on what kind of personalities they have as a learner. Knowing all of
this, you will be able to discover on how you are going to treat or to deal with them.
You will know their interests and needs. This will be your guide on choosing the right
and appropriate method, strategy and technique in teaching.
2. What is good and true and therefore must be taught.
> The authenticity and importance of the knowledge you impart to the learners
should be considered. You should not give information without basis. You should not
give information that is not relevant to them. You should ask yourself on what you
should teach to your students?

Example:
1. Essentialists believe that learners should learn the basic skills (reading, 'riting,
'rithmetic and right conduct). Because they focus academically, they rely on the use
of textbooks.
2. Perennialists believe on the emphasis on vocational and technical education.
3. How a learner must be taught in order to come close to the truth.
> After knowing what kind of learners you have and what is their needs, it is now
the time to decide on how you are going to transmit knowledge effectively to your
students. The methods, strategy and technique should be considered.
Examples
1. Perennialist use Socratic dialogues to develop the understanding of the learners.
2. Linguists use experiential method. The learners experience sending and receiving
messages.
III. Insights
I realized in this lesson that teachers are not simply giving knowledge to the
students. They plan it before they teach it. Part of the planning is the clarity of the
Philosophy they believe in because it has a big influence. As a teacher, we should
have a clear idea on our goal or objective, curriculum and teaching strategies.
I believe that Philosophy influences a person. For me, it is essential to have our
own Philosophy because it will be our guide in life especially in decision making
because we believe in certain things. It will lead us on how to deal with our students.
It can be a good way to determine what kind of person are we and what kind of
students we want to develop. It is also important because we will have a constant
attitude and beliefs on how we are going to deal with the students, parents,
colleagues and administrators.
Like the progressivist said "Change is the only thing that does not change."
Change is inevitable and our world is open for development. The student before may
not be the students we will have by 2030. In regards with that dealing with them will
also change. Their nature will also change and it should be addressed by the
teachers. It is not impossible to see reconstruction of some Philosophy or even more
a whole new well-constructed Philosophy.
