Fire crews hard work motivates cabin owners

Twenty
firefighters
were
dispatched with chainsaws, mowers,
a wood chipper and a skid steer to
help remove the overabundance of
vegetation in the Fort Peck Pines
Recreation Area, south of Glasgow.
For a week, crews worked in hot,
humid conditions to complete this
important hazardous fuels reduction

project.
The noise and hustle of crews
definitely got the attention of local
residents. In fact, it provided a
great opportunity to visit with
residents on how to prepare their
property for wildfires, establish an
evacuation plan and do their part
to prevent a wildfire from starting,

explained Crystal Beckman, Fire

Prevention Program Coordinator
with the DNRC. Before we knew
it, residents were raking up pine
needles, cutting brush and hauling
it to us to be chipped.
Local, state and federal agencies
partnered to complete this work.

Fire
Crew continued from front
This collaborative effort was spearheaded by fire

managers from Long Run Fire Department, Valley

County, Montana Department of Natural Resource and
Conservation, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers.
Local champion, Bob Sparky Hanson, Valley
County Deputy Fire Warden and Long Run Volunteer
Fired Department volunteer, initially started visiting
with cabin owners in the fall of 2015. Hanson explained
to them the importance of reducing the amount of
vegetation around structures and how this could increase
the structures survivability. Over twenty landowners
signed up to have work done.
Crews assessed homes and discussed the best
vegetation treatment options with residents. They also
discussed the Ready, Set, Go principles. One, be Ready
prior to wildfire season. Two, be Set, have situational
awareness during fire season; and three, Go, do not wait
to be told to evacuate, leave early.
Crews also worked along the roadways removing
vegetation within the right-of-way corridor. The removal
of vegetation will make travel safer for both firefighters
and residents in the event of a wildfire. All vegetation
removed from the cabin sites and roadways was chipped.
Wood chips are being made available to the public, free
of charge, at the Valley County Landfill.
Project successes include:

community.

Its gonna get warm out there, but not a 100 degree

looking a little too calm! The weigh boats, however, will
have a much easier job than in some past years.

after midnight.
Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 87. East southeast

East wind 7 to 13 mph.
Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. East
northeast wind 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable.
Saturday Night: A 50 percent chance of showers and
thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60.

mph after midnight.
Sunday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after
noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 81. North northeast
wind 9 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance
of precipitation is 70%.
Sunday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely
before midnight, then showers likely and possibly a
thunderstorm after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low
around 57.

The Womens Resource Center would like to extend a heartfelt

Thank-you to the Glasgow community along with surrounding
communities for donating food, clothing, and household items.
Those items are given to victims of domestic and sexual violence
along with families that are in need. The demand for donated food

you for all your support, donations and continued efforts to meet the
needs of victims and families here in Valley County.
In addition, the WRC is asking individuals with gardens

Bernice is Nashuas Reunion Queen

Nashuas 2016 All School Reunion will be held this

weekend, and Bernice Johnson
Nybakken Herman, age 102, has
the honor of being Queen.
Bernice Johnson was born
in 1913 in Canada, and came to
Montana in 1916 as a young child
with her parents and older sister
Ruth. She started grade school in
the Sjorson community. Bernice
went to Battle Lake Minnesota to
attend school and confirmation
classes in 1928 and 1929, staying
with her grandparents. In 1930 and 1931 she went to Nashua
High School. Some of the students in her high school classes
included Gordon Bollinger, Mary Mitchell, Evelyn Barnes,
Neva Barnes, Evelyn Euy, Bill Carr, Wilbur Waters, Clifton
Carr, Willard Beacher, and Erica Weinmeister.
To attend school in Nashua, she had to move in to town
as there was not transportation to get back and forth (she
lived on a farm northwest of Frazer). One year, she and other
students hatched in an apartment building above the Post
Office. Another year, she worked for Myrtle Olson cleaning
house and caring for children in exchange for board and room
while attending school. A school principal she remembers
was Mr. Sonaman and a teacher was Nate Peglar. Bernice was
in the Glee Club. Bernice married Elmer Nybakken in 1932.
Her children, Shirley and Wayne, graduated from
Nashua High School as did her three grandchildren, Jackie
Ball Dowell, David Ball and Jim Ball. Four of her seven
great grandchildren, Lyle, Eric, and Dusty Dowell and
Brandi Ball also graduated from Nashua. Another great
granddaughter, Tarin Ball, attended school in Nashua for a
part of her school years.
Bernice has been a member of the Nashua community since
she returned from Minnesota in 1929. For many years she spent
the winters in Arizona and came back to her home in Nashua
for the summer. She now lives in Glasgow in Prairie Ridge. She
loves to cook and bake for her family; her specialties include
lemon meringue pie, bread pudding and traditional Norwegian
items like lefsa, Rommegrot and krumkake. She likes to play
cards, bingo and gamble. At age 102, she still takes several bus
trips each year to gamble at Four Bears in North Dakota.

Letter to the Buzz

Bravo to the Theatre Crew!

Dear Buzz,
I made a trip to the Glasgow City-County Library
on Thursday, June 23rd for the Fort Peck Theatres
production of Pinochio.
I enjoyed it very much and it was a very good turnout. I hope the other two shows had as good a turn-out
as well. To the actors, they were super with what they
had to do. A great job well done! Than you to them.
Sincerely,
Callie L. Christinson

Of course the Fridge knew!

John Cassis is one of our nations finest motivational

speakers. He once told a story about a time when he was
serving as one of the Chaplains for the Chicago Bears
during their glory years of the 80s.
As John tells it, Bears Coach Mike Ditka was about
to deliver a locker room pep talk one day. He looked up
and saw defensive tackle William Refrigerator Perry.
How could he not see him? At 338 pounds the Fridge
stood out even in a crowd of pro football players. Ditka
gestured to the Fridge. When I get finished, Ditka
said, Id like you to close with the Lords Prayer. Then
the coach began his talk.
Meanwhile, Jim McMahon, the brash and
outspoken quarterback, punched John Cassis. Look
at Perry, McMahon whispered, He doesnt know the
Lords Prayer.
Sure enough, Perry sat with a look of panic on his
face, his head in his hands. He was sweating profusely.
Everybody knows the Lords Prayer, said Cassis to
McMahon in disbelief.
After a few minutes of watching the Refrigerator
leaking several gallons of sweat, McMahon nudged
Cassis again. Ill bet you 50 bucks Fridge doesnt know
the Lords Prayer.
As Cassis tells the story, he stops to reflect on the
absurdity of it all: Here we were sitting in chapel and
betting 50 bucks on the Lords Prayer.

When Coach Ditka finished his pep talk, he asked all
the men to remove their caps. Then he nodded at Perry
and bowed his head. It was quiet for a few moments
before the Fridge spoke in a shaky voice, Now I lay me
down to sleep. I pray the Lord, my soul to keep.
Cassis felt the tap on his shoulder. It was Jim
McMahon. Heres the 50 dollars, he whispered. I had
no idea Perry knew the Lords Prayer.
