THE PREDICAMENT OF THE FALLEN AWAY CATHOLIC

A few weekends ago when Fr. McElwee celebrated our Mass, he made a statement in his homily
that caused me to thinkit was something like less than 25% of Catholics attend Mass each
week in this country. In our colleges, the numbers are often higher. All of us know the obligation
of a practicing Catholicto assist at Mass each Sunday or weekend under penalty of sin. These
people who miss Mass are usually unconcerned about the obligationsometimes they come and
other times they dontas though it couldnt possibly make much difference one way or the other.
They are neither hot nor cold as Jesus described them in a despicable manner, but lukewarm.
When Jesus used that word, he wasnt kidding and all of us should pay attention. Fr. John
Reinkemeyer once said:, We were told in the seminary to never be surprised to what depths a
person can fall. It is the effect of original sin within us. G.K. Chesterton, famed Catholic convert,
said, No one ever leaves the Catholic Church for a reasonusually its because he is too lazy to
think or too weak to be good.
Modern church officials speak of ReMembering Church, to offer friendship and support for
those who have left active practice in the Church and are considering a return. These are
members of the parish family who at some time in their lives, stepped away from active practice
of their Catholic faith. We are advised by our Church leaders to extend a welcoming hand to
inactive Catholics who may be thinking about a return to participation in the Church. We all
know someone, in our family or a friend, who no longer attends Mass regularly.
Our Church is made up of human beings and real people have genuine problems. Even if the
priest seems weak or incapable, we need faith to see Christs signs transcending the human being
who is celebrating these signs. Fr. Thissen said, Never leave the Church over a priestsomeone
whom you cannot get along with. You dont go to Mass for the priest, but to please the Lord.
Some have left the Church because the priest made a sharp remark; others did the same because a
nun was too hard on them while in school. These are not good reasons to separate from Holy
Mother Church. Priests are men and they make mistakes. Even among the 12 Apostles, one was a
betrayer. And at the end, all of them denied Jesus except John. Others depart because they see
hypocrites there each weekend. Of course, you will find individuals who occasionally attend
Mass whom you consider two-faced. Many do not live up to the Churchs teachings. It would be
no reason for you to leave the Church! We have hypocrites who practice medicine and law, but we
dont blackball them if we need their services. Al Capone, John Kennedy, and Tom Pendergast
come to mind as Catholic churchgoers. They didnt follow Church teachings but we wouldnt
sever ties with the Church because of their unusual behavior.
If you know a fallen-away and you feel that you can speak freely, this would come under the
category of Re-Membering Church. In the course of discussion, you could point out how brief
life is in contrast to eternity. Other advantages would be the chance to reconcile with God through
confession, and to be able to receive the Body and Blood once again in the Eucharist. The Church
helps to put ones life in perspective, know his relationship with God, and at death what eternity
will bring. Pride will be a lonely companion on the last daythe fallen away need to confront this
fact.
