Tell me what you know about Feminism? Patriarchy sucks? I know. Gender inequality blows?

Tell me about it. Women earning 70 cents for every mans dollar? So uncool. How basic.
Congratulations though you are now ready to matriculate into the college of your choice and be
among the many other feminists.
While I may believe in all of the above
I cant join in with the false enthusiasm because my veins are filled with images of my family
My uncle thanked God for
the gift of wisdom, like the one that got Solomon 700 wives
My uncle thanked God for
the strength to work the field like Adam
My uncle thanked God for a lovely wife with
hands that make perfectly round pupusas,
legs that dance with the mop,
ears that hear him talking with her replacement in El Salvador
arms that hug the kids he had around his lover
a torso that tries to wrap around him, but simply fills the dents on the left side of his bed
My tia
closes her eyes and remembers
the days when numbers were a second language
How in school she learned that a balance sheet consists of assets, liabilities and
Owners Equity
How when the left doesnt equal the right
Either too much was taken out
or too much was put in
and lets face it the left side of the bed didnt equal the right
And this would be shown in the income statement
the income statement that now expressed
how she dedicated 19 hours to my tio
and how she only deserves 5 hours of sleep
how when she was 6 months pregnant
my tio had a woman in El Salvador 3 months in
How she knows that when she adds all the equities shes put in
it clearly outweighs the liabilities
but somehow
she manages to get the exact value shes made with what it cost her to make it
manages to believe that numbers no longer fueled her dreams of accounting
My tia handed me a fresh balance sheet so the numbers that once fueled her dreams
can fuel mine
While I can be Rosie the Riveter for Halloween

Attend a SlutWalk with a sign exclaiming Woman Power

I decide not to, because its not that easy

Where I come from I cant tell my mom
Mommy when I grow up I want to help deconstruct the white racist paradigm!
For me, feminism is not another article in the Huffington Post, it is antithetical to my upbringing
Because perhaps you do not know that feminism is far more than
Rosie the Riveter
Woman Power
and Susan B. Anthony
It is more than your casual politics
hip liberalism
You did not grow up surrounded
by constant images
motifs,
ghosts,
of my uncle and aunts skewed balance that showed
their true belief that machismo is just a part of loving someone
That I need to respect
acknowledge
and listen to them
Because deep in my veins
I know that I could have been my aunt
if I had been born on the soil that produces
Fruits of religious men
Fruits of women who live behind the smoke of a comal
