OPITO

Guidelines for Training Providers Running

Pilot Courses for OPITO Approved Standards
Effective: January 2012
OPITO develops standards for the offshore oil and gas industry that
have been written with substantial research and guidance from
relevant industry work groups. It is important that new standards are
trialled in a pilot course. The purpose of the pilot is to check that the
training can be delivered effectively to the standard.
To deliver a successful pilot course, OPITO requests help from its
network of approved training providers, offering the certain
advantages to the training provider that pilots the course. Should more
than one training provider seek to deliver a pilot course, OPITO will
select one provider.

Pilot Course Guidance Notes

a) Delivery of the pilot course is free of any charges from OPITO.
b) Training providers cannot charge the delegates to attend the
pilot course. (Delegates can be made up from the training
providers internal staff)
c) OPITO requires that the training provider submits detailed
lessons plans and appropriate risk assessments before the
pilot course is run; however, this differs from OPITO approval
when a full desk top audit was required.
d) A member of OPITOs Standards and Development Team, along
with invited industry work group (IWG) members will attend the
pilot to evaluate the delivery of content and timings of the
course for adherence to the standard. Where possible, a member
of OPITOs Standards and Approvals department will attend the
pilot to check the auditability of the course.
Note: At this stage OPITO will not be auditing the quality of the
course or making any recommendations for any future training
centre approval.
e) Regular discussion, including participation from the delegates
and IWG members in debriefings, will be required to refine the

standards content. These discussions will also provide useful

input to OPITO on future delivery of the course against the
standard for auditing purposes.
NOTE: These discussions will add to the length of time required to run
the course, so all attending the pilot need to be aware of this.

APPLYING FOR OPITO APPROVAL

Once the standard has been approved and published on OPITOs
website, training providers can to apply for OPITO approval to deliver
the course. A formal desktop audit, site visit and delivery of the full
course will still be required for OPITO approval.
A 50 % discount on the Initial Audit fee (expenses extra) will be
offered to the training provider that has piloted the standard, however
the standard OPITO approval process still applies as per Guide to
OPITO Approval for Training Providers.
