CALIBRATION OF THERMOMETER

1. Prepare two containers and label it container A and container B.

2. Fill the container A with crush ice and water. Ensure that the container have
enough crushed ice to provide an environment of 32 oF and allow it to stabilize. At
the same time, fill the other container with distilled water and heat it up until it
reaches the boiling point.
3. Insert both the calibrated thermometer and the thermometer which needs to be
calibrated into the container A at appropriate immersion depth.
4. Hold both thermometer away from the bottom and sides of the container to avoid
error.
5. Record the readings of both thermometer.
6. Allow the thermometer to stabilize for about 3-4 minutes.
7. After the thermometer has been stabilize and the temperature of the water at
container B has reached the boiling point, insert both thermometer at appropriate
immersion depth.
8. Hold both thermometer away from the bottom and side of the container to avoid
error.
9. Record the readings of both thermometer.
10. Plot the readings from both container in a manner where the calibrated reading
in both containers is plotted first. Connect both points. The line formed will serve as
the basis.
11. Plot the readings from both container then connect both points. The line formed
will be the deviated line of the thermometer which needs to be calibrated.
11. Get the y-intercept and the slope of both lines then calculate the deviation using
the formula:

d= y 1 y 0
d=( m1 x+ b1 )( m0 x +b x )
Where: b = y-intercept
x = temperature
m = slope of the straight line
12. The calculated result will serve as the temperature that needs to be added to
the reading of the thermometer.
