Dear Parish Family,
Today is Pentecost Sunday – the birthday of the Church.
We celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the
Apostles 50 days after the Lord’s Resurrection. Today is
the last day of the Easter Season. (It’s hard to believe that
50 days have passed since we gathered on Easter
Sunday!)
Before the Ascension the Lord promised His Apostles
(and us) that the Holy Spirit will be with us always until the
end of time. The church is 2,000 years old and would not
have survived if the Spirit wasn’t in charge. Over the
centuries the Church has had to confront problems from
both within and without. The fact that the Church is still
here after all of these crises and tribulations is a testament
that the Spirit is in the driver seat.
The Holy Spirit that came upon the Apostles and
transformed them from a fearful group to fearless
individuals is the same Spirit that is with us to help guide
us on our way. I invite you to call upon the Spirit each day
to help you on your spiritual journey.
The Spirit continues to bring people closer to Him. We
have numerous examples of this in our own parish. This
weekend some of the people who have recently entered
our faith family through the RCIA will give witness talks.
These inspiring talks not only talk about the Spirit being
alive, but also invite adults in the parish to learn more
about our rich Catholic traditions. I thank Fr. Kevin and the
RCIA team for helping people discern their call to a deeper
Catholic spirituality. If you or someone you know would
like to become Catholic, receive the Sacraments of
Initiation, or have a desire to learn more about the Faith
please see Fr. Kevin or a member of the RCIA team.
I am happy to announce that Angela Connolly will be our
new Director of Religious Education effective July 1st. We
are very blessed to have Angela as a new edition to our
parish staff, for she brings so much experience and is
highly certified to undertake this new role.
There will be more information in upcoming bulletins as
well as an article from Angela to the parish.
During the month of May, we honor Our Lady in various
ways. Last weekend members of our Rosary Society
spent hours pruning and planting flowers in front of the
statue of Our Lady on our parish grounds. I thank them for
their hard work, support, and generosity.

St. John Baptist Rossi - Feast day: May 23 /1764
This holy priest was born in 1698 at the village of Voltaggio
in the diocese of Genoa and was one of the four children of
an excellent and highly respected couple. When he ws ten
a nobleman and his wifre who were spending the summer
at Voltaggio obtained permission from his parents to take
him back with them to Genoa to be trained in their house.
He remained with them three years, winning golden
opinions from all, notably from two Capuchin friars who
came to his patrons home. They carried such a favourable report of the
boy to his uncle who was then minister provincial of the Capuchins that a
cousin Lorenzo Rossi a canon of Santa Maria in Cosmedin invited him to
come to Rome. The offer was accepted and he entered the Roman
College at the age of thirteen. Popular with his teachers and with his
fellow pupils he had completed the classical course with distinction when
the reading of an ascetical book led him to embark on exfessive
mortifications. The strain on his strength at a time when he was working
hard led to a complete breakdown which boliged him to leave the roman
College. He recovered sufficiently to complete his training at the Minerva,
but he never was again relly robust. ndeed his subsequent labours were
performed under the handicap of almost constant suffering.
On March 8, 1721 at the age of twenty three he was ordained and his first
Mass was celebrated in the Roman College at the altar of St. Aloysius
Gonzaga to whom he always had a special devotion. His fame came from
his work as a confessor and as his ministry to the sick.
Selection of New Members
for the Pastoral Council of Ministries
On Monday, May 24 at 7:30 in the auditorium, the Pastoral
Council of Ministries will select new members for the Council.
Every parishioner who is actively involved in the life of our faith
community through participation in any of our 25+ ministries is
invited to attend. Through Discernment– a process of prayer and
reflection—parishioners may offer their time and talent and be
considered for membership on the Council.
Those who are not able to serve at this time still play a valuable
role as part of the Discernment process. New members are
chosen by votes cast by all attendees.
We need you to attend, whether or not you feel you are able to be
on the Council. Come with an open mind and let the Holy Spirit
guide your decision.
PURPOSE OF A PASTORAL COUNCIL OF MINISTRIES
To ensure that the life of the parish reflects the mission of Jesus,
as embodied in the parish mission statement, and that all
parishioners have the opportunity to share in that mission.

· Enabling others to use their gifts in ministry
STRUCTURE OF A COUNCIL OF MINISTRIES
· Some members come on to the council through a discernment
process. Others are appointed to the council by the pastor. All
serve three-year terms.

· To collaborate with the pastor and other council members
QUALITIES OF A COUNCIL MEMBER
· Spirituality - a commitment to prayer, gospel values,
compassion and caring
· Knowledge - of the mission of Jesus and of the church, of the
parish, its people and ministries
· Skills - in working in groups, in communicating and
collaborating, in planning, problem solving and decision making
· Attitudes - excited about this parish, eager to help build it up,
open to others’ opinions, willing to study issues and to work for
the good of the whole
· Ability - to work with others, to tolerate delay and ambiguity, to
follow through on tasks with focused energy

 MEMORIALS - Parishioners are now invited to memorialize a
candle burning in front of the Blessed Mother and the candle over
the Tabernacle in memory of a loved one. These are in addition to
the present Memorials of the altar bread, altar wine and the altar
Dates May 23rd through May 30th, 2010 candles. Donations for each of these will be $15.00 per week and
the Memorials will be for one week each.
Sunday - Pentecost Sunday
Monthly Memorial Mass - Starting June 19th, we will be offering a
May 23rd 8:00 am Rev. James T. McKenna Memorial Mass one Saturday each month. Our Memorial Mass will
(4th Anniversary) be offered for the intentions of anyone who has been unable to
reserve a specific date for a Mass. We will have more than one

intention at these Memorial Masses. The cost of this Mass will be
12:00 pm Carletta Rutledge $5.00 each. This should enable anyone to remember an intention
during the month they desire, although not the specific date.

Unannounced Masses - These Masses will not be offered in our

as at St. John Vianney, (the retired priests home), at inner city

IT'S TIME TO REGISTER FOR 2010/2011 CLASSES
As of June 1st our fees will be going up for the
Religious Education Program. (Please note that we have
not had an increase since 2006, although our expenses have
continued to rise.)
However, if you register and pay before June 1st the fees
will be the same as last year:
1 Child - $90; 2 children - $150; 3 children - $170; and 4
children $190.
Beginning June 1st the fees will be:
1 Child - $100; 2 children - $175; and 3 or more children -
$200.
Registration forms were sent home with the children
before classes ended. We are updating our records so one
form needs to be filled out for each child attending and
returned with the appropriate fee.
LETTERS WILL NOT BE MAILED HOME THIS YEAR.

RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE
Abortion is not healthcare because killing is not healing.
1. As you know, the House of Representatives passed a Pro-
Abortion health care Bill 219-212 on March 21st. While Pres.
Obama later quietly signed an executive order to pacify pro-life
legislators, it was a purely political move. It does not correct any
of the serious pro life problems in the bill. The president cannot
amend a bill by issuing an order, and the federal courts will
enforce what the law says. So we must continue to fight the good
fight by becoming aware of the issues and how our
representatives voted on this life issue. We must vote for the
legislators who are on the side of protecting the unborn in the
upcoming election in November.
2. Nebraska, the state whose ban on partial-birth abortions was
tested by the Supreme Court and ultimately passed into law by
Congress and President George W. Bush, is now considering a
ban on abortions of babies capable of feeling pain: The Abortion
Pain Prevention Act, LB 1103. Stay tuned for updates.
3. The Ultrasound Option Bill (SB597) was passed by the West
Virginia Senate and House in March 2010. This bill obligates
abortionists to inform mothers they have the right to view an
ultrasound of their unborn baby, although they would not be
forced to do so.

A Parental Notification Amendment is being talked about in the NJ
legislature. It is ACR71 and would require parental notification before a
minor young woman could have an abortion. Please call or write

RESPECT LIFE UPDATES
The Respect Life Committee would like to thank all of the
parishioners who are participating in our Spiritual Adopt a Baby
program. It is an on-going 9 month program. Please feel free to
pick up an extra prayer card in the church and join your prayers
to ours. We will update you each month as to the development of
your baby. There are prayer cards for our Spiritual Adoption
Program in the basket in the back of the church. Please feel free
to take one and pray for a baby to be spared from abortion. In
October 2010, we will have a baby shower to celebrate the births
of our adopted babies. We look forward to another successful
program this year as we strive to end abortions and return our
Pentecost Voice-The Holy Spirit, who came on
7PM Pentecost, gave voice to the apostles to proclaim the truth of the Gospel.
The Spirit, the Soul of the Church, continues to enable the Church to
speak, and enables us to speak in our individual capacity. As Bishop Elio
5:30PM Sgreccia, former President of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life
has said, “The Church must speak out in today's context on fundamental
rights, the right to justice, the right to peace, but above all and in the first
place, the right to life. If the Church did not speak, did not proclaim the
truth, it would be abandoning its duty; it would be unfaithful to society, to
the good of society. Therefore, its precise duty is the very liberty to
intervene with word, and also with example -- the example of promoting
human life, of intervening for the salvation of mankind."

feel that abortion is the only option and can find assistance at the

Corpus Christi Procession
On Sunday June 6th, we will
celebrate the Solemnity of the
Body and Blood of the Lord. This
feast, formerly called Corpus
Christi, is one that is strictly
Catholic in that we celebrate and
partake of the Body, Blood, Soul,
and Divinity of the Lord at each
Mass. There are two days that we
have a special remembrance of the Lord in the Eucharist: Holy
Thursday in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper and the coming
feast of the Body and Blood of the Lord. Because Holy
Thursday’s Mass is clouded by the Cross which the Lord will
soon embrace, the liturgy is sober and cannot reflect the
majesty of what the Eucharist embodies for all of us. Having
said that, the Solemnity of the Body and Blood was instituted to
give proper recognition of such a central part of our faith
tradition. On the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord,
one of the traditions of the church has been to have a solemn
procession with the Lord Jesus outside for all to worship and
venerate. This year for the first time, we would like to have
such a procession at the conclusion of the 12 noon Mass.
We will carry the Lord Jesus in the Monstrance outside and
around the parish grounds and then return to the church where
the Mass will conclude with Benediction of the Most Blessed
Sacrament.

YEAR FOR PRIESTS
In observance of the 150th anniversary of the death of
Saint John Vianney, the Curé of Ars (August 4, 1859),
Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed a ‘Year for Priests’
beginning June 19, 2009 and ending June 11, 2010.
The dates coincide with the Solemnity of the Most
Sacred Heart of Jesus which, since the pontificate of
Pope John Paul II, has been observed as a world day
for the sanctification of priests. During the course of the
year, the Holy Father intends to proclaim the Curé of
Ars, until now patron of diocesan priests, patron of all
the priests of the world. Please keep your parish priest
and all priests of the world in your prayers during this
special year.

How You Can Help Increase Priestly Vocations
 Pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood.
 Offer your time and financial support to strengthen youth
ministries in your parish.
 Teach your children and grandchildren how to listen to the
promptings of the Holy Spirit.
 Ask your children and grandchildren if they ever thought
about becoming a priest.
 If you know someone who has the qualities of a good priest,
point it out to him.
 Pray for the young men discerning the priesthood.
 Find ways to support and encourage seminarians in your
diocese.

As you know, Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed

10:00 am Mass to honor our own priests.

Mother Teresa Denied Honor
Empire State Lighting Partners are denying
Mother Teresa the honor of having the towers
shine in blue, white and blue on August 26.
On this day, the U.S. Postal Service will honor
her with a stamp, marking the 100th
anniversary of her birth.

Come Join Us—Remain in Hope - A first ever Healing Mass
and devotion to St. Dymphna, patron saint of mental health,
will be held Tuesday, June 8, 2010, 6:30 pm, Main Altar, at
the Cathedral of St. Patrick, 460 Madison Ave., NY, NY.
Dymphna is a 7th century Irish saint who is patroness for those
suffering from emotional and psychological difficulties, as well
as any illness of the mind such as Alzheimer’s or Autism. Such
individuals, their families, friends, friends and mental health
professionals will find comfort and support at this upcoming
Mass which includes a blessing with her relic and the
communal right of anointing of the sick.

The needs of fathers who have suffered the loss of a son or
daughter are unique. The Office of Family Life Ministries of the
Archdiocese of Newark invites all grieving fathers to a morning
of prayer, sharing, and discussion, away from societal
expectations, in the hope it will provide a special place of
understanding and healing. The Support Group for Fathers
Whose Children Have Died will meet on Saturday, June 12,
