Jars Snack Time Lesson Plan

Teaching Objective Snack time is an opportunity for students to practice a
variety of skills in a real life setting - a meal. Students will practice
appropriate communication, taking turns, waiting, counting, matching pictures
to objects, and self-management skills.
DOK: Level 1: Answer question: What do you want?, Whos turn is it?
Recognize and identify PECS icons that correspond to their preferred
food/drink items.
Common Core Standards: Reading Standard for Informational Texts
Standard 1.2 Ask and answer questions as who, what, where, when, why, and
how to demonstrate understanding key details in a text.
Standard 3-Students will understand mathematics and become
mathematically confident by communicating and reasoning mathematically,
by applying mathematics in real-world settings and by solving problems
through the integrated study of number systems and measurement.

Motivation:
Students are intrinsically motivated by food.

Procedure:
Students will transition to snack time by changing their schedules
through a transitional cue. They will report back to the group table
at the location of the Snack Time symbols.

Each student will have a turn to wash his or her hands in the
bathroom
Each assigned student will complete a preparatory snack time
helper task including: announcing, passing out core vocabulary place
mats, cups, plates, napkins,etc ( JARS)
Each assigned student will complete a post-snack time task
including: wiping the table, washing dishes, and sweeping the floor.
Students will do transition from snack time to the next activity
through a transitional cue.

Staff will assess each students need for appropriate prompts and
reinforcements to display appropriate communication and behavior.

Staff will use reinforcements and visual symbols to keep students on task.

Lashana/ Sarah :will guide children to disribute placemats, cups, plates, with
"Jars" directions ( picture of the child who give the plate/PECS book to--Lashana/ Sarah: will conduct and supervise post-snack time tasks (wiping the
table and/or sweeping) to be completed by each assigned student.
Caroline: will prompt students to travel with sentence strips as well as use
their core vocabulary placemat and assist adults to distribute requested
items to students whenever needed.
Follow up/Homework:
Students will be given a worksheet (Circle, match pictures, words to
pictures, cut and paste or writing activity depending on childs skill level) to
bring home and share the snacks they ate that day to review with parents.
This will encourage social communication at home. Parents are encouraged to
assign their child meal time tasks such as place the place mats, wipe the
table, bring napkins, throw garbage and take plates and to the sink after the
meal to increase self care skills at home.
Parents will give their children opportunity to engage in daily activities at
home by following above suggestions.
