of
their

interacting as a system
Within each ecosystem,
there are habitats which may
also vary in size. A habitat is the
place where a population lives.
A population is a group of living
organisms of the same kind
living in the same place at the
same
time.
All
of
the
populations interact and form a
community. The community of
living things interacts with the
non-living world around it to
form the ecosystem. The habitat
must supply the needs of
organisms, such as food, water,
temperature,
oxygen,
and
minerals. If the population's
needs are not met, it will move
to

habitat.
Two
different
populations
cannot
occupy the same niche at the

processes
of
competition,
predation,
cooperation,
and
symbiosis occur.

THE ECOSYSTEM
The degradation of our environment made evident by denuded
forests, dying rivers and lakes, and a polluted atmosphere, has led to
environmental science or ecology. Ecology is the branch of science
which deals with the interrelationships of living and non-living things.
Ecologists are generally classified as biologists and their work
includes geology, physics, chemistry, and even sociology.
Ecologists study the environment based on the ecosystem. An
ecosystem is an interacting unit or system consisting of groups of
organisms and their non-living or physical environment. The living
organismsplants, animals, protistsare referred to as biotic
components. The non-living portions or abiotic components include
water, carbon dioxide, soil and physical factors such as wind and
temperature.
Every ecosystem needs energy which generally comes
from the sun. This energy is used by producers whose function is to
make energy-rich compounds through the process of photosynthesis.
Producers are mainly green plants which contain chlorophyll
necessary for photosynthesis. Thus, algae, trees, and grass are
producers.
Organisms which are self-feeding are autotrophic while
organisms which feed on the others are heterotrophic. Consumers are
heterotrophic because they feed on producers. Plant eating animals
or herbivores such as cows, rabbits, and grasshoppers are called
primary consumers. Secondary consumers which are also called firstorder carnivores are those that eat herbivores such as snakes, foxes,
and insect-eating birds. They still derive their energy, though
indirectly, from producers. Tertiary consumers or second-order
carnivores such as hawks and wild cats eat secondary consumers.
At the end of the food chain are the decomposers. These
organisms feed on decaying tissues of producers and consumers or
their organic wastes. In the process of feeding, they release nutrients

Study
the
pictorial
diagram of the water cycle. Following the diagram is a list. Number the steps in
the list as each occurs in the diagram. If two steps occur simultaneously, give the
same number.
19
20
Key Points:
1. Avoid describing steps in a series of choppy, simple sentences.
2. To write a cohesive description of a process, sentences may be
combined by using linkers and expression showing the sequence of
steps; thus:
For preceding events
before, prior to
For following events
after, until, then, next
For simultaneous events
at the same time, as, during
3. To mark stages in the process use:
a. First to mark opening or initial stage
b. Finally to mark last or ultimate stage
c. Next, then, subsequently, meanwhile to mark following stages
d. As, while, during to mark simultaneous stages
e. Eventually, later to mark events after some time.

Read critically the paragraph below. What do you observe?
(1) Pollution is one of the harmful effects of industrialization. (2) First, a
small and unindustrialized town enjoys the freshness of its air and the clearness
of its rivers and lakes. (3) Then, factories and commercial establishments are
built, different means of transportation fill the streets, while the population
steadily grows. (4) Eventually, the factories and vehicles emit black smoke while
the people in the commercial and residential areas dump their garbage in rivers
and lakesresulting in both air and water pollution. (5) As a result, people are
trapped in an unhealthy and polluted environment that threatens our life. (6) But
we have no one to blame for all these but ourselves.
