In a developing country like Bangladesh, population growth, rapid industrial development, lack of waste
water management and unfavorable practices such as release of chemical effluents into canals and other
water sources without adequate treatment is disturbing the eco system and putting undue pressure on
available resources. Envisaging the growth of the textile sector in the near future, the environmental
impact is anticipated to worsen. Presently, more than 1800 washing, dyeing and finishing processing units
of garment and textile industries are located in and around Dhaka. Most of these facilities, due to lack of
knowledge, little access to information, limited resources and testing facilities, release waste water
containing complex mixtures of hazardous chemicals, both, organic and inorganic into water bodies.

How will the mobile testing laboratory help you?

The objective of the program is to enhance waste water monitoring and management by collecting and
analyzing samples of waste water and sludge from the factory. Test methods are in line with the United
States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and World Health Organization (WHO) methods. The
program will also conduct workshops and seminars to scale up the overall information and knowledge
available to the stakeholders.

On-site testing service
The mobile testing facility caters for washing, dyeing and finishing plants of the textile sector. The
vehicle is equipped with sampling and measuring instruments and accessories and offers 'on-the-spot'
testing and sampling services for waste water and sludge. Assisted by a team of technicians and experts,
the mobile services has a cluster approach to enable industrial clients to avail quality services with a
standard sampling procedure at an affordable price. In a nutshell, the facility will provide on-site
sampling, testing, calibration of meters and monitoring of environmental parameters.

Awareness and training sessions are organized to educate stakeholders on environmental practices
followed by the industry. Experts will train the stakeholders in order to offer the best methods to treat
waste water and sludge. Training samples are tested and reports are shared with stakeholders. Details
include level of contamination to highlight the importance of taking corrective actions and the processes
to follow. Designing and training guidance for Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) offered and Common
Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) operator is also extended to assist the process and to ensure that the
correct methodology is used in order to mitigate the risk of failure or problems.
