2. Bids may not be awarded to the lowest bidder, taking into consideration quality

6. No payment shall be made until all work is satisfactorily completed and

Flavours Of Summertime!
Are you heading to the beach for the
day, camping for the weekend or having
the neighbours over for a barbecue?
Grab some local seasonal produce to
enjoy along with your summertime fun!
There are so many great reasons to eat
locally grown foods, but my favourite,
by far, is the flavour. Produce fresh from
your garden, a farm stand, or a farmers
market is picked at the peak of ripeness
and is brimming with flavours that make
summertime so special.
Its a bonus that local foods are better
for the environment, keep our hard
earned money in the community, and are
more nutritious than foods that come
from afar. For me, summer is a time for:
Fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and a mint leaf bobbing
in a tall glass of sparkling
water, sipped by the lake.
A colorful parfait layered
with yogurt, whole grain
cereal, and freshly picked
huckleberries enjoyed while
sitting on the patio.
A big leafy green salad
loaded with spinach,
kale, tomatoes, broccoli,
cucumbers, and shredded beets
carried next door and paired with the
entre on your neighbours grill.
Crunchy ears of corn with fresh dill from
a food truck, bright red juicy cherries
from the Farmers Market. Tomatoes and
herbs from a Community Garden tossed
on a whole-wheat pizza and cooked in an
outdoor oven.
A homemade fresh fruit popsicle
enjoyed by a child after an afternoon of
running through the sprinkler.
Watermelon sliced and slurped while sitting at a picnic table surrounded by trees.
Celery stalks dipped into fresh salsa
made with tomatoes, cilantro, garlic, chili
peppers, onions, and passed around the
campfire.
Colourful sweet peppers, zucchini,
cauliflower, and eggplant, slowly roasted
on the barbeque.
The smell of muffins baked in the oven
on a cool late summer evening, made
from zucchini picked from the garden.

Keep Foodborne Illness

Off Your Summer Menu
Its the time of year when many of us
enjoy cooking outdoors - in parks, campgrounds and back yards. This pleasurable
summer pastime of casual dining also
provides ideal conditions for outbreaks of
foodborne illness.
Foodborne illness peaks during the
months of May through September because of barbecuing and outdoor eating.
E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter are
examples of some of the many bacteria
related to handling raw meats
and other perishable food
items. Thats why its vital to be
sure items are refrigerated, well
cooked and handled with care.
Outdoor cooks should keep
food safety in mind as they are
preparing summer feasts. These
four words can help you reduce
the risk:
Clean: Wash your hands with
soap and warm water before
and after handling food. Wash all dishes,
cutting boards and counters with hot
soapy water. A spray bottle containing
1/2 tsp of chlorine bleach per litre of
water can be used to sanitize these items.
Separate: Keep raw foods away from
cooked foods to avoid cross-contamination. Store raw meat at the bottom of the
fridge or cooler to prevent juices from
dripping onto other foods. Always use a
clean plate when taking cooked meat off
the barbecue.
Cook: Properly cooking food will kill
harmful bacteria. Cook all meat to
the appropriate internal temperature

digital food thermometer to measure
the inside temperature of cooked meats.
Once cooked, keep hot foods at 60C or
hotter until ready to serve.
Chill: Always thaw meat in the fridge,

microwave, or under cold running water
never at room temperature. Do not let
cooked or perishable food sit out in the sun
or at room temperature for more than two
hours. Cool any leftovers right away. Finally, keep cold foods cold at 4C or lower.

a lot of fun with Wet n Wild Dunkaroo, the communities dunk tank. At three throws for $5 we made $393 for
Helping Hand Trust, a charitable organization that helps
people with medical travel expenses. The highest earning
Dunkee was Jeff Mattes at $100, with Dr. Pat Haegadorn,
Doug Yee, Andy Shadrack and Mel Bryce running close
behind. All the Dunkees were great sports and wonderful community members.

town and up the lake, market gardens in Meadow Creek

At 1 pm, Tamara Sunsong will lead a soil building workshop at the community garden, free to members, $5 for

Are Back!
Its back! Step back in time on July 23 and

24 and experience life as it was in the Middle
Ages.
This year promises to be bigger and better, according to the Nakusp Medieval Societys president and event coordinator, Daniel
Abraham. The first Nakusp Medieval Days
event in 2015 was an event that brought hundreds of new faces to the town, from all over
western North America, says Abraham.
After last year, we analyzed feedback and have
built an event that will be bigger and better
in every way. We are thrilled to have provided
local jobs, offered educational content and
contributed to the regional economy. With
the additions planned for the 2016 event, we
are confident that our guests will come away
with an even more unique and entertaining
medieval experience. We have jousting! How
cool is that!?
