A.4. Teaching and Learning Methods

A.4.1. Lectures
These will address key issues that are relevant to the learning outcomes for
this module. The lectures will cover the technical content as well as guiding
students towards wider reading.
All students are required to read around the subject, each week areas of
interest will be pointed out by your module lecturers. Wider reading is essential
to help you understand the application fo fluid mechanics within the
engineering profession.

A.4.2. Tutorial Sessions

The majority of the tutorial sessions will normally be classroom based.
Students will be issued tutorial questions (normally these will be posted on
Moodle). Students are expected to prepare in advance and solve the tutorial
questions BEFORE coming to tutorials.
The tutorials are NOT the place to START attempting the questions. The
tutorials are then a time where you can ask questions, gain feedback and
resolve any issues you are having with the subject matter.
You are required to submit the solutions to all tutorial questions online through
Moodle before 11:55 pm on the Wednesday two weeks after the tutorial
sheets are issued. Some of the tutorial sheets will be formative work and
others will be summative and make up the marks for the Portfolio of
tutorial work component of this module (for further details see page 10).
ALL TUTORIAL WORK (FORMATIVE & SUMMATIVE) IS COMPULSORY.

A.4.3. Practical Sessions (including Laboratory work and computing

sessions)
Four of your of your Practical sessions will be held in the Hydraulics
laboratory [KD.G.22] where students will be able to explore practically areas
of theory covered in lectures. Two of the laboratory sessions are directly
related to the Presentation of Practical Findings component of assessment
(see page 10)
Please note

that appropriate footwear and clothing MUST be worn in the laboratory.

Students not wearing appropriate footwear will not be allowed into
the laboratory.

EG5103 Engineering Mathematics and Hydraulic Analysis

Civil Engineering, ACE

Safety briefings will be carried out in the first 10 minutes at the start of
each laboratory session students who arrive after the safety
briefing will not be allow to undertake the laboratory class

The remainder of your practical sessions will be held in a computer suite,

where you will learn to develop simple spreadsheets to to analyse simple fluid
mechanics problems.
The practical sessions are designed to guide you with the Presentation of
Practical findings Coursework component, where you will be required to
work in teams to produce three presentations describing the spreadsheets that
you have developed to analyse simple problelms in fluid mechanics (two of
these make up part of the summative assessment).
Your presentations will be given during the practical sessions in weeks 6, 12 &
18. The tutor(s) will give verbal feedback during these sessions (further
details are given on page Error! Bookmark not defined.).

A.4.4. Feedback
Feedback will be given in a variety of ways:

Group tutorials with opportunity for individual questions, worked examples

and class discussion

Relevant past exam questions can be found on MOODLE Moodle>

EG4103 > Relevant Past Exam Papers

Individual feedback during practical sessions

Written feedback giveon on submitted tutorial questions

A.5. Indicative Learning and Teaching Time

This module is a 30 credit module which is designed around 300 hours of
learning and teaching time, which may be split as follows

Student/tutor interaction (some of which may be online)

120 hours

Student learning time (including assessment):

180 hours

[Note: Student Learning Time means private study i.e study outside of
lectures/tutorials/laboratories etc. So 180 hours student learning time over
24-28 weeks equates to 6.5 - 7.5 hours private study per week for this
module!]

C.1. Examinations
Both examinations for this module will be based upon material covered in
lecture time, tutorial time and from indicated wider reading. Each examination
will be 1 hour 30 mins long.
This is the first time that this module has run so specific past papers for this
module are not available however relevant past examinations questions will
be indicated during lecture and tutorial time and posted on Moodle> EG4103
> Relevant Past Exam Questions.

C.2. Coursework Tasks and submission dates

C.2.1. Portfolio of tutorial exercises
You are required to complete a series of tutorial sheets. Ssome of these
sheets will contribute towards the summative Portfolio of tutorial exercises,
the remaining are part of the formative work that you must complete as part of
this module.
Your tutorial exercises will be published on Moodle each Monday. Students
must produce hand written solutions to the exercises and then scan a copy of
the solutions as a pdf document. The pdf version of the coursework must them
be uploaded to the relevant submission point through Moodle.
Students will be given the opportunity to ask for feedback on their solutions
during scheduled tutorial time.
A schedule for submission of the summative tutorial work is given on page 12.
Exercises must be submitted before 11:55 pm on the relevant date.

C.2.2. Presentation of Practical findings

The purpose of this task is to develop your ability to use simple spreadsheets
to analyse simple fluid mechanics problems as well as opportunity to develop
your presentations skills.
The coursework for this component will be in a 2 parts (a set of individual
spreadsheets and a set of team presentations) further details will be given in
the coursework assignment brief.
You will be required to work in teams. Each team member will individually
develop an excel spreadsheet for the part analysis of simple fluid mechaincs
laboratory data).

10

EG5103 Engineering Mathematics and Hydraulic Analysis

Civil Engineering, ACE

Team members will then combine their spreadsheets to produce a more

detailed analysis of the practical data
You will be required to explain your spreadsheet analysis in the form of verbal
presentations.
A copy of your individual spreadsheets must be submitted submitted ONLINE
through Moodle > EG4103 2014-15 and the presentations will be given during
the scheduled practical sessions
A schedule for submission of the summative practical work is given on page
