strategyiseasilymodifiedforthehighschoolcurriculum.
ThisparticularPBLisdesignedtoteachstudentsabouttheNervousSystemand
AmyotrophicLateralSclerosis,betterknownasLouGehrigsDisease.Thesystemsof
thebodyandrepresentativecelltypesareoftentaughtthroughteacherdirectedlessons.I
thoughtitwouldbemoreengagingformystudentstolearnaboutHumanBiology
throughaninquirybasedlesson.Forexample,comparinganormalmyogramtooneof
anALSpatientandthengoingtotheirbooktoseewhatthosespikesmeancanteach
thestudenttheconceptoftheactionpotential.Inthisformat,theNervousSystemis
muchmoreexcitingfromthestudentspointofview.
Thelessonplancanchallengeanylevelofstudentbecausegeneralbiologyclassescan
keeptothebasicswhileadvancecollegeboundstudentscanexplorethemolecularand
geneticaspectsofALS.Althoughoriginallydesignedasagroupproject,thereisno
reasonanindividualcannotcompletetheexercisesbyhimorherself.
Theprojectshouldbedoneinsixparts,givingstudentstimebetweeneachsectiontofind
theanswerstotheirquestionsandproposeappropriatehypotheses.Givenenoughclass
timeandcomputersintheroom,severalsectionscouldbeaddressedinasingleclass.
Otherwise,givingasinglesectionperclassperiodisadvisablethisallowsstudentsto
workontheresearchpieceathomeanddoesnotrequirecomputersforindividualsinthe
classroom.
