Who are we?

About Us
We are two girls who are passionate
about helping people in our immigrant
community.
Karen Herrera: I was born in Mexico
City, Mexico. My parents are Cuban but
lived many years in Mexico City. I have
lived about ten years in the United
States, but I have not forgotten my
roots. In August 2007, I crossed the
border with my parents and sister. By
experiencing a series of obstacles, such
as those that many immigrants also
experience, I was inspired, alongside
my friend Julia, to create a source of
information for parents who may be not
be informed about the education of
their children. Everything can be done
with effort!
Julia Talamo: Like many of the students
of Miami-Dade, my parents are not
from the United States. My parents
were born in Argentina and immigrated
to the United States when they finished
their school in Buenos Aires in order to
have a better life in this great country.
With work and the process of
assimilating in a new country, my
parents never learned about many of
the school opportunities that existed

Creating a world of
opportunities one
step at a time

Where do I start?

After enrolling your child in a

community school, it is
important to consider
communication.
Communicating with your child
and your child's teachers is the
key to success.
Monitor your child's progress
and be informed about the
resources that are at your
fingertips.
Create a motivating relationship
with your child. Show them that
you are their number one fan
and that you believe in their
potential.

What kind of school

is ideal for my
son/daughter?

Miami-Dade County is proud to

give parents and students the
opportunity to choose the
school they want to go to
through Magnet programs.
Some schools provide
transportation and preparation
programs for university careers.
Many of these schools have
lottery systems in order to
accept students.
Some also have transport
limitations.
For more information, visit
http://yourchoicemiami.org/
If you have limitations,
remember that the student
makes the school, not the other
way around.

What do I do if my
son/daughter has
difficulties in
school?

The most important thing is

to talk with your
son/daughter and
determine the cause of the
difficulties.
It is important to, as a
parent, relate the
importance of paying
attention in class and
asking questions when not
understanding a concept or
idea.
Ask the school your
son/daughter attends if
there are opportunities for
free tutoring or if a teacher
can help the student in any
way.
If you have access to a
computer in the library, at
school, or at home, the
student can access the
tutoring.mdpls.org page.
With a card and an account
of the public libraries of
Miami-Dade, your
son/daughter can enter the
card number and pin to
take advantage of this
tutoring service.

How can I access all

these resources?

The Internet is a very

important resource. Much of
the information that
contributes to the education

How the
educational system
that measures my
sons /daughter
does learning work?

Tests that are administered by

Miami-Dade County Public
Schools, are a way to evaluate
the student the teachers
effectiveness.
Students in Pre-Kindergarten
participate in the Florida VPK
Assessment.
Students in Kindergarten
participate in the Florida
Kindergarten Readiness
Screener.
Students who are in ESOL
participate in the CELLA exam.
One of the most important tests
is the one that is administered
at the end of the third grade.
This test, in conjunction with
the students grades, helps
determine whether students
pass the grade or not. This test
is known as the Florida
Standards Assessment, or FSA.
This replaced the FCAT and
measures the student's ability
in math, English, and in some
degrees in writing and science.
This test is also administered in
grades 4-10
