THE DIFFERENCES IN STUDENT MATHEMATICAL COMMUNICATION

ABILITY WITH CONTEXTUAL TE LEARNING AND CONVENTIONAL
LEARNING OF TEN GRADES SMAN 1 B.PURBA IN
THE MATTER OF STATISTICS
ABSTRACT
This research was conducted by the low students' mathematical communication ability.
The purpose of this study is 1) to determine whether the students' mathematical
communication ability taught by contextual learning strategies was higher than students
taught by conventional learning in ten grades SMA N 1 Bangun Purba, 2) to determine
the students' answers related mathematical communication ability that are taught with
contextual learning strategies and conventional in ten grades X SMA Negeri 1 Bangun
Purba . This study was a quasi-experimental research. The population in this study all of
students in ten grades SMA N 1 B.Purba which on is of 4 parallel classes. While, the
sample this study is homogeneous sample, and randomly selected population. Students as
a sample of two classes, class X-2 that have total were 30 students who studied with
contextual learning and class X-1 that have total were 30 students studied with
conventional learning. Average value from pretest experiment class was 37,22 and from
control class was 45. Average value from posttest experiment class was 75 and from
t
t
control class was 68,05. From the calculation results obtained hitung = 2.079 and tabel
t
= 2,000 with df = 58 and = 0.05 level of significance. It can be seen that hitung >
t tabel
H0
Ha
= 2.079 > 2,000 then
rejected or received
. So from the results of
research that hypothesis testing concluded that the students' mathematical communication
ability class with contextual learning strategies higher than students' mathematical
communication ability with conventional strategis on the subject statistics in ten grades
SMA N 1 B.Purba the. Based from students response process, contextual learning
strategies was better than students' mathematical communication ability with
conventional strategies. Based on the research that mathematics learning with contextual
learning strategies can improve students' mathematical communication skills, especially
on the subject of statistics, so the learning strategies that can be used as one variation of
mathematical learning that can be applied by teachers.
