This example presents a method for calculating the shear resistance of a

roof truss to column flange connection using an end plate. The chord is that
shown in example SX017. The bolted connection uses non-preloaded bolts
(i.e. Category A: Bearing type bolted connection).
NOTE: For completeness, all the design checks listed below should be carried
out. However, in practice, for normal connections, the checks marked * will
usually be the critical ones. In this example, only checks marked with an * are
shown in detail. For guidance on the other checks, reference should be made
to the NCCI for shear resistance of simple end plate connections [SN014].
Before evaluating resistances, checks are made to ensure sufficient ductility
(see Section 1) and to avoid premature weld failure (see Section 2).

DUCTILITY REQUIREMENTS

The supporting element is a column flange, therefore the connection should

comply with the following conditions:

Since t p < 12,86 mm , the ductility is ensured.

WELD DESIGN

The supported beam is steel grade S355, so the requirement is the following:
a 0,45t w, b1

SN014

0,45 5,5 = 2,5 mm

a = 4 mm
Since a > 2,5 mm, therefore OK.
