What's TrackSpacer?
TrackSpacer is an audio plug-in (available in VST, VST3, AU, RTAS and AAX formats) that
creates space in the mix for an instrument, voice, or other audio by performing
automatic, multiband equalization on a channel based on the spectrum of another
channel. In real-time it analyzes the audio frequency content via sidechain, and applies
an intelligent 32-band EQ to subtract those frequencies from the track where
TrackSpacer is inserted.
TrackSpacer is versatile and can be used in many different situations. But for illustration
let's look at two common examples where i can solve complex EQ problems.
If the kick and the bass are competing for space, insert TrackSpacer in the bass
channel and have it listen to the kick. Then you can easily fine-tune it so that it
only subtracts from the bass signal the frequencies that help define the core
sound of the kick. The result is that both are heard more clearly.
If you need to create room for the vocal in a busy and dense mix, route all the
competing instruments to a bus, insert TrackSpacer, and have it listen to the
vocal. As the performer talks or sings TrackSpacer selectively subtracts the
vocal's audio frequency energy from the bus signal. This gives the vocal a lift
without a reduction in the overall volume level of the instruments.

About Sidechaining
Sidechaining within a DAW refers to using the audio signal in one channel (the send) to
trigger or control a virtual effect (VST, AU, etc) that modifies the audio in a different
channel (the receive).
Two examples of sidechaining that you may be familiar. Both involve the use of a
compressor:
Ducking using the presence of one signal to trigger a volume reduction of
another signal. A classic ducking setup involves using a compressor on a synth
pad, with the compression triggered by the presence of a kick drum. This causes
the synth pad to duck out of the way of the kick.
Gating using the presence of one signal to trigger a gate on another signal. A
common dance and electronic music technique is to use the audio from a kick
drum to open the gate on a bass track. This tightens up the mix by making he
kick drum and bass attacks perfectly in sync.
Of course, you can also use sidechain techniques with stem mixes so that an entire
group of tracks can be ducked, gated, equalized, or otherwise affected in response to
another signal.

Setting Up TrackSpacer
This section provides the steps for inserting TrackSpacer and setting up the sidechain.
1. Decide on two tracks or channels that you want TrackSpacer to analyze. The
channel containing the audio to be equalized is called the affected signal. The
channel that TrackSpacer uses for comparison is called the control signal.
2. Insert TrackSpacer as an effect on the channel you wish to EQ the affected
signal.
3. Setup the sidechain. Each DAW requires a different procedure. Cubase users had
problems with VST2.4, so we updated the plugin to VST3, so now its very simple
to set up. Ableton Live users also had some problems for routing the sidechain,

GUI Overview

1. EQ display: The EQ Display shows the traces of the control signal spectral
content (upper trace blue) and the spectral content of the frequencies
subtracted (EQ applied) to the affected signal (lower trace white). TrackSpacer
analyzes and subtracts frequencies in real time so the traces animate based on
the audio signals. The area below the audio signals indicates the name and value
of any control that is being changed (or has the mouse cursor hovering over it).
2. Advanced Panel button: when clicking this button you go to the advanced
panel.
3. Freeze button. Freezes the EQ at the current level based on the EQ Ratio, Low
Pass, and High Pass settings.
4. Ratio: sets the amount (ratio) that TrackSpacer subtracts.
5. Low Pass: sets the low pass frequency.
6. High Pass: sets the high pass frequency.

1. Pan: This knob has two different behaviours depending on what mode youre
working on. When L/R is selected, the pan knob pans the effect to the left
channel when turned to the left or the right channel when turning to the right.
That means that TrackSpacer 2.0 can reduce frequencies where you want.
When M/S is selected the pan knob controls the mid and sides channels. When
turned to the left it subtracts frequencies only in the mid channel, and when
turned to the right the frequencies are only reduced in the sides.
2. Mode selector: L/R means left/right and its the default value, working in
stereo. M/S means mid/sides, working in mid-side mode.
3. Attack/Release: Set the amount of time you want TrackSpacer to react and to
relax. Expressed in ms.
4. Sidechain: When this button is selected you are only hearing the sidechain
input. This is useful to better fine tune the filters to find posible masking issues.

Basic Usage
Basic usage involves adjusting TrackSpacers controls and most importantly, listening
carefully to the mix. The steps below are designed to get you started.
1. Ensure that the sidechain is setup correctly.
2. 2. Start audio playback in the DAW. When you first insert TrackSpacer the audio
controls will be at their default settings:

EQ Ratio 25%
Low Pass Frequency 20 Hz
High Pass Frequency 20,000 Hz

3. Listen to the audio of the affected signal and watch the EQ Display.
4. Increase the EQ Ratio to get a better perspective of the range of frequencies
being subtracted from the affected signal. At this point you may only be able to hear
the affected signal very faintly.

5. Adjust the Low Pass Frequency and High Pass Frequency controls until you
can hear (and see) that TrackSpacer is subtracting enough of the affected signal
to make room for the audio of the control signal.
Note: Although there are many ways to use TrackSpacer, one effective method is
to create a notch that subtracts only those frequencies that seem to be blurring
or muddying the mix.
6. Fine tune TrackSpacers controls using the advanced panel until you find the
sweet spot where both tracks are sitting nicely in the mix.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. Will it work in my DAW?
Yes, it is available in all major formats: VST, VST3, AAX, RTAS and AU (Audio Units)
both for Mac and PC.
2. Is it 64 bit?
Yes, it is.
3. Is TrackSpacer an EQ or a multiband compressor?
We could say that TrackSpacer is the best of both worlds. It is not a multiband
compressor, it is not a traditional EQ, it is not a dynamic EQ, its a completely new
approach. Ill explain why:
A sidechained compressor reduces the volume of a track based on the volume
of another track. TrackSpacer reduces the frequencies of a track based on the
frequencies of another track.
A multiband compressor lets you control the volume of the track splitted in a
number of bands, but only the straight volume.
TrackSpacer is a 32 band EQ that creates automatic EQ curves based on the
spectral content of another track to make more room for this track.
4. Is it a miracle plugin?
Of course not, we dont want it to be. TrackSpacer helps you to get better mixes
more quickly and easily. It can solve specific problems like I need this acoustic
guitar to pop out because it gets blurried in the middle of the distorted guitars,
synths and piano, but I cant give it too much volume, then you would insert
TrackSpacer to fix that.
But it can also be used to mix a whole song, do to its analysis you can get precise
equalisation and subtract only the frequencies that are needed between all
tracks to sit well with each other.
5. The effect is too noticeable.
As we said, its not a miracle plugin that you just plug in and it just works. You
still have to use your ears and your music creative perception to fine tune it.
