The analytical section contains 5 questions from Geosphere, Hydrophere, Atmosphere, Astronomy
and Environment.
The total time for MCQ section and analytical section is 90 minutes.
There are also bonus questions in every section. Bonus questions are not compulsory.

Advice to Examinees:
Try to answer all the questions.
Read the questions carefully, making sure you understand what the question is asking.
If you are not sure about an answer, move on to the next question, and come back to the question
later.

GEOSPHERE

On Monday, 5th January 2016, at 5:05 am BST an earthquake was felt by the residents of Bangladesh, India,
Bhutan and Myanmar.
a. What was the magnitude of the earthquake, in the Richter scale? (1)

b.

The gure shows the way to measure the magnitude of an Earthquake. For a dierent earthquake, If the dierence between S and P wave is 10 seconds and the maximum amplitude is 2mm. Then what will be the magnitude
of this earthquake? Explain the process you followed. (2)

c. Which theory is now used to explain earthquakes? What is the basis of this theory? (2)

HYDROSPHERE

What is the water cycle? List any two major processes of the water cycle. Briefly decribe how the water
cycle works. (5)

Bonus question (not compulsory): All substances generally contract (become smaller) when they are
cooled. The same is true for water, but when the temperature of water begins to go below 4 degrees
Celcius, it starts to expand. Explain why. (2)

ATMOSPHERE

a. Name the boundary between mesosphere and stratosphere. (1)

b. What do you know about ozone layer? Where is it found in the atmosphere?(2+1)

c. The Krmn line is considered to be the point where outer space starts. How far above the earths
surface (sea level) does outer space start? (1)

Bonus question (not compulsory): It would (almost) never rain on Earth if dust didnt exist. Explain
why. (2)

c) Stars shine because they give out energy in the form of light, heat and other radiation.
How do stars produce energy? (1.5)

d) The sun is also a star. If there was an explosion on the surface of the sun, how long would it take us on the
earths surface to know about it? Why? (1.5)

Natural Gas is one of the major forms of fossil fuels available in Bangladesh.
a. Where is the rst discovered gas eld in Bangladesh? (1)

b. Natural Gas is mostly methane, CH4. Write down the chemical reaction of burning methane. (1.5)

c. Natural Gas is often preferred over other fossil fuels for environmental benets. What could those benets be?

d. List two disadvantages of using natural gas.
