FILIPINO VALUE: RESPECT

What makes a Filipino respectful? Here are some of the factors that one can see in a Filipino
culture of respect:

Kissing the hands of someone older. It is unexplained but the Filipinos call this as
Bless. It is an act wherein the younger one would take the hand of the older one and put
it on his or her forehead with the head slightly bending down.

Using respect words. This factor is very distinct to the Philippines. Po, Opo, and
Ho are placed in between words when speaking to someone older. As early as two
years old, these words are introduced to children and made sure that is taught to avoid
people telling one that his or her child is disrespectful.

Subordinate/Superior relations. The Filipinos culture of respect reaches out to even the
professionalism aspect of the work place. Very seldom could one see a subordinate going
out of the office after work to have a drink or two. For a lot of Filipinos, they value the
strict attitude of a pure and professional working relationship. Even if the subordinate
initiates a relationship outside of work, a Filipino would always feel the uncomfortable
feeling that it would entail.

Negative side: Some people from other culture who would watch a Filipino and showing
the respect he or she learned would say that sometimes, the respect is already out of place
and unnecessary. Some Filipinos call it respect but in reality, it is already an inferiority
complex whether personal or racial

Near a century after colonization, the Filipinos can attest that the culture of respect is still
present. Despite the influence of the media and other societies regarding respect as very
relative, respect is still treasured this side of the world. It is evident in the way children are
raised and in the way the elders pass on the culture of respect to the next generation. As long
as there are Filipinos who are willing to pass on this gem of a culture, the culture of respect
shall thrive.

Short Story
Title: Collateral Damage

The private library was big. It was quiet. As Cynthia walked along the book shelves, she came
across with some books.
Dinosaurs and Stone Age. . Are Aliens Real? The Crippled Man at the End of
Bulonglong Street she was about to pick up a book when the door opened.
Since she had stepped foot into the library, the shrink, a psychologista black haired woman in
her 40s with soft curls and gold hooped earrings had not much looked at Cynthiaonly
showed her into a plush red armchair before rapid-firing questions her way. Why were they here
again? Oh thats right, it was a new way of treating patients, where in the patients chooses a
place theyre most comfortable with so that patients would not get anxious and the session with
the shrink be more effective. Cynthia chose a private library since its quiet and there will only
be the two of them.
The standard shrink questions for new patients, of course. At this point Cynthia was familiar
enough with the process that she could answer almost all of them without even blinking. She
entertained herself by alternately studying the shrink's glossy black hair and the winding patterns
on the Oriental carpet while wondering why the lack of eye contact bothered her so much.
There was somethingher voice her demeanour, something unsettling about this woman.
Something Cynthia couldn't quite place; had she met this woman before? Her mind drew a
maddening blank.
" Health issues?" the shrink asked, her sparkly purple pen traveling across the clipboard along
with the printed words.
"No."
"Trouble sleeping?"
"I am usually unable to sleep at all."
"Do you have insomnia?"
"Yes."
"Have you ever attempted suicide?"
"No."
"Have you ever contemplated suicide?"
A deep breath. "I believe all of us have, at some point in our lives."
The shrink ignored her, tucking a stray black strand behind her ear. Even that action Cynthia
vaguely recognized. She bit her lower lip in frustration as the shrink continued the interrogation.

What is your line of work?

I am a professional photographer, see that book over there? Cynthia pointing on a book at the
shelf display, The Crippled Man at the End of Bulonglong Street, Im the one who took a
shot of that cover.
I see. the shrink, seemingly not amused, continued. "Does anyone in your family have a
history of mood disorders? Has any relative of yours exhibited emotional instability?"
"No." Her family, as far as she knew, did not do emotions. Maybe her response had been too
hasty. The woman's head snapped up and wide brown eyes locked against Cynthia's for a split
second. There was a flash, a flash of something. Shock? Recognition? Fear? It passed by too
quickly, even for Cynthia's sharp eyes, eyes that people claimed could catch everything and read
anyone. The shrink immediately severed the inadvertent connection, tearing her gaze away and
refocusing on the clipboard still clenched in her now tense fingers.
Cynthia had seen those eyes before. But the color the color was wrong! Brown. They had not
been brown the last time she'd seen them.
"On a scale of one to ten, with ten being perfect, can you rank your family life based on"
"No," she interrupted, the word accidentally tumbling out of her throat.
" Excuse me?" Cynthia sighed and elaborated on her accidental slip. "No, I know where this is
going. These questions are to pinpoint a probable cause of my condition, but you are wasting
your time."
"Oh?" The shrink did not look up this time. "We're almost done."
Cynthia had been through the procedure enough times to know that they were not almost done.
There were at least thirty more questions.
Cynthia let out a puff of air. "I was not bullied at school. I was never sexually harassed or abused
as a child or as an adult. It might interest you to know that I have no close friends and no ties to
my family, but none of that is pertinent to my situation right now." Her voice had begun to rise in
pitch and she quickly cut herself off.
The shrink was jotting something down. Indications of emotional instability, Cynthia guessed,
letting her back fall against the armchair, abandoning her perfect posture. Denial. Lack of selfcontrol. Touchy.
A year ago, Cynthia never would have allowed such break in composure. A year ago, she had
perfect self-control, unshakeable poise. Also a year ago, she might have cared. All her life she
had been raised to be reserved and respectful and proper, but if there was one thing she had
learned from this debacle, it was that meekness got you nowhere.

Still, she had paid 500 pesos for the session and she would be damned if she did not get her
hours worth, even if she harboured doubts toward its effectiveness in "healing" her. (This was,
after all, her sixth shrink. She had no idea why she kept trying, either.)
And a year ago, her father, the only parent she had, died. She took a deep breath, allowing the
chilly library air to fill her lungs, slowing her heartbeat. "My apologies," she said emphatically.
"What I mean to say is that although certain aspects of my personal life may be red flags for
childhood trauma and the like, but I assure you that my current condition has been triggered by
recent events." She paused. "I have a theory about what my problem is."
The shrink's mouth tensed into a thin line of disapproval, yet another familiar action that she
could not place. "Do tell, miss."
Do tell, miss.
The tone was what clicked the last piece into place for Cynthia's recognition. It was that unique
balance of patience and patronization, achievable by only one person in the world.
"Severe disillusionment." At the shrink's raised eyebrows, Cynthia shrugged her shoulders and
gave a faint smile. "A lot's happened in Buhangin since your elopement, Mother."
Mother. Mother. Mother.
The shrink looked up at Cynthia. Her face remained passive. I believe our session for the day is
over. Ill just contact you on when our next session will be.
Cynthia stood up, Then Ill be leaving first. Thank you for your service. walked up to the door
and left. As Cynthia left the building, she saw a dirty crippled man sleeping on a bench, beside it
was a plastic cup containing few coins. She walked up near the crippled man and dropped a 1
peso coin in the cup then turned around and walked away. How long has it been since the last
time she saw her mother? Ten years? Fifteen? Twenty? It was too long, she barely recognized her
during their session earlier. Cynthia looked up, it was already dark. She sighed and walk along
the streets of Manila, contemplating on where she should go to find her seventh shrink.
